"Supreme traveller" Notable Speech expected to handle July Cup distance

Notable Speech heads the market for the Group One at Newmarket and is priced at 5-2 with William Hill. Charlie Appleby-trained stablemate Symbol Of Honour is into 5-1 with the same firm Charlie Appleby is confident 'supreme traveller' Notable Speech will have the speed to cope with the step back to six furlongs for today's July Cup at Newmarket. The Godolphin-owned son of Dubawi has had 10 career outings - each of them at a mile, including Group 1 triumphs in last year's 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. ‌ Notable Speech, fourth in the top-level Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in two outings in 2025, was supplemented for this afternoon's Al Basti Equiworld Dubai-sponsored test. ‌ And Appleby believes coming back in distance is the right move for William Buick's mount. 'He's a supreme traveller and the July Cup can be won by horses like that who are dropping back from a mile,' said the trainer. ‌ 'He wasn't really in the Guineas picture because William wasn't sure whether he would get the mile. 'If we were going to try a Guineas it was going to be the French Guineas, but of course he won the Guineas at Newmarket and that's where he's been ever since. 'He's done physically very well - he's a typical Dubawi who is a ball of strength with a deep girth on him - and he's always travelled like a quick horse in his homework.' Notable Speech is William Hill's 2-1 favourite to beat 14 rivals and Appleby added 'If you are going to introduce a sprinter at this level then this is the track to do it and this could be the right race. 'If he can win it, it changes the dynamics of his future career, both as a stallion and on the racecourse.'

Newsboy's ITV selections for Newmarket, York and Ascot on Saturday

Newsboy is backing Flora Of Bermuda to flourish in the July Cup at Newmarket and he expects Run Boy Run score a third win on the July course in the Bunbury Cup, both on ITV FLORA OF BERMUDA is fancied to prove a thorn in the side of favourite Notable Speech in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup (4.35) at Newmarket today. The Andrew Balding trainee, a close third in the Group 1 British Champions Sprint at Ascot last October, went under by a neck to this afternoon's rival Inisherin when making her return in the Group 2 1895 Duke Of York Stakes in May. ‌ But she had that rival in behind when finishing third in the top-tier Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, finishing three and a half lengths behind Lazzat. ‌ Neither the winner nor runner-up Satono Reve are in opposition here, and Flora Of Bermuda's Ascot effort needs marking up as she came from further back than the front pair. Notable Speech heads the betting but steps back from a mile and Flora Of Bermuda, with Wathnan Racing jockey James Doyle on board for the first time, can show the favourite a clean pair of heels. ‌ RUN BOY RUN is the choice to improve on an impressive record at Newmarket's July Course by beating 12 rivals for the bet365 Bunbury Cup (2.50). Richard Spencer's four-year-old has two wins and two seconds to show from four visits to the summer venue and ran a cracker when fourth to this afternoon's favourite More Thunder over the final six furlongs of the Rowley Mile on 2,000 Guineas day in May. My selection was subsequently a good second to Aramram over the same trip at Newbury a fortnight later and should be forgiven a down-the-field effort behind Never So Brave in the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot on his most recent outing, as he was marooned in a group of three towards the far side. ‌ The following afternoon, things didn't go to plan for MISS NIGHTFALL in the Sandringham Fillies' Handicap, but the James Fanshawe trainee has plenty to recommend her in the Trustatrader 20th Anniversary Fillies' Handicap (2.12). A well-backed 16-5 favourite, Miss Nightfall did best of those attempting to make ground from the back and won't be troubled by going back from a mile to seven furlongs. Another Ascot also-ran, RAAFEDD, is taken to bounce back in the bet365 Mile Handicap (3.25). ‌ Tom Marquand's partner found daylight hard to come by in the Britannia Handicap but clear water here will enable him to show his true colours. The blistering form of Aidan O'Brien's juveniles points to favourite ITALY in the Group 2 bet365 Superlative Stakes (4.00), while the stars can align for ORION'S BELT in the Rossdales British EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes (1.50). At York, HAND OF GOD, impressive in two wins in 2024 but beaten on both starts this season, is given the chance to get back on track in the John Smith's Cup (3.10). ‌ AL QAREEM is on a roll for Karl Burke and should continue the good work by capturing the Group 3 John Smith's Silver Cup (3.45). He comes here on a losing streak of nine, but WASHINGTON HEIGHT drops down to Listed class for the John Smith's City Walls Stakes (2.35), and is poised to take advantage. A 4lb rise for a course-and-distance score at the Dante fixture may not be enough to prevent OLD COCK from following up in the John Smith's Racing Handicap (2.00). ‌ With an excellent strike-rate of two from three at the track, and top-class form at the trip, HAATEM makes obvious appeal in the Group 2 Cornish Orchards Summer Mile (2.12) at Ascot. A third in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap at the royal meeting enhanced his burgeoning reputation, so REDORANGE should go well in the LK Bennett Butterfly Mark Heritage Handicap (4.50). Cinderella's Dream on course for Breeders' Cup redemption after Falmouth first

Royal Ascot last month was something of a struggle for Charlie Appleby but his 'home' meeting this week has been a different story and the former champion trainer will head into the final day of the July Festival looking for a second Group One in as many days after Cinderella's Dream edged out January, the favourite, in the Falmouth Stakes on Friday. Appleby has two runners in Saturday's July Cup, the midsummer sprint championship, including the probable favourite, Notable Speech, and ended the middle afternoon of the meeting with six wins from 13 starters over the first two days. Cinderella's Dream, meanwhile, was a perfect reminder of how the trainer's fortunes have turned around in recent weeks, as the first Group One win of her career followed a defeat as the 5-4 favourite for a Group Two at the Royal meeting. 'I just don't know whether she was 100% at Ascot,' Appleby said. 'We were beaten turning in in my opinion, [but] Will was just travelling so much better today and when they hit the rising ground, I thought it would be tough to get past her.' Cinderella's Dream was the favourite for last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf but finished a half-length second after running into traffic problems around Del Mar's tight turf circuit. The San Diego track is the venue for the Breeders' Cup once again in November and Appleby will work backwards from there in terms of Cinderella's Dream's schedule for the remainder of the year. 'She's as tough as teak and I'm delighted for her getting a Group One as she's been so consistent,' Appleby said. 'It annoyed me when that got away from us last year so we're very much going back for another crack.' The Group Two Duchess of Cambridge Stakes has been won by a subsequent 1,000 Guineas winner as recently as 2022 when Saeed bin Suroor's Mawj beat another future Group One winner in Lezoo – and Karl Burke has next year's Newmarket Classic very much in mind for Venetian Sun after she maintained her unbeaten record with a neck success in the latest renewal. 'Her pedigree says she is more a miler at least, and a three-year-old,' Burke said. 'She's a very mature filly with a great engine and I think racing against the very best horses will bring out the best in her.' The July Cup and two of the season's most valuable handicaps are the highlights of ITV Racing's busiest Saturday of the year and with the shrewd William Haggas stable fielding a strong favourite in both the Bunbury Cup and John Smith's Cup, the Group One sprint at Newmarket is arguably the most interesting betting contest of the day after Notable Speech, last year's 2,000 Guineas winner, was a surprise addition to the field earlier this week. The last 2,000 Guineas winner to add a July Cup to his record was Tetratema in 1921, but Notable Speech went straight to the top of the betting on Monday with both Charlie Appleby and William Buick expressing cautious optimism that he will cope with the drop back in trip. 'Obviously we won't know fully about six furlongs until we try it, but it's worth a try,' Buick said this week. 'He's a horse with loads of speed and if he can adapt to that early pace and be within himself, I think he'll be there with a very good shot.' Notable Speech is the top-rated runner in Saturday's race but not by much, and while there is no standout in the current crop of sprinters, it still requires a slight leap of faith to back him at around 5-2. Whistlejacket, a Group One winner as a juvenile last season, is a live contender, but Flora Of Bermuda (4.35) also arrives with strong credentials having finished third in the Jubilee at Ascot last month. Andrew Balding's filly has gone close at the highest level already, still looks to be improving from race to race and is a fair bet at around 5-1 to finally notch a Group One win. Newmarket 1.40 This is generally one of the strongest fillies' maidens of the season and Desert Flower, this year's 1,000 Guineas winner, was Charlie Appleby's fifth winner in eight runnings 12 months ago. William Buick has picked Snow Light from Appleby's two runners and the hint is probably worth taking. York 2.00 Owen Burrows's Remmooz lost his unbeaten record in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last month but was still showing signs of inexperience there and and is likely to progress for the run. Newmarket 2.12 Miss Nightfall was much better than the bare result when sixth in an ultra-competitive race at Royal Ascot last time and arrives here running off just a 1lb higher mark. Ascot 2.22 Three Royal Ascot winners head the betting for this Group Two including Never So Brave, who put up one of the best handicap performances of the season to win the Buckingham Palace Stakes under 9st 12lb can take the step up in class in his stride. York 2.35 The admirably consistent Jm Jungle is a regular over this track and trip and could have a little too much speed for his rivals as he steps out of handicap company in Britain for the first time. Newmarket 2.50 William Haggas's More Thunder has an obvious chance on the form of his close second in the Wokingham Handicap but he had a hard race to get as close as he did after being outpaced three out and his short price makes the market for an each-way bet on Ebt's Guard at around 20-1. He was less than four lengths behind impressive winner My Cloud in the Hunt Cup last time, one of several pieces of form that give him a realistic chance to upset the favourite. York 3.10 It is 15 years since a three-year-old landed this ultra-competitive handicap but only a handful have made it into the field and it is not a stat that should put anyone off backing Archivist. He was a cosy winner off a 5lb lower mark on his handicap debut at this track last month, is bred to improve for this step up in trip and a single-figure draw is a big boost for his chance too. Newmarket 3.25 It took five attempts for Mister Winston to get off the mark at Chester last time out but he showed definite improvement to go two and a quarter lengths clear of the runner-up and starts out in handicaps off what could prove to be a generous mark. Newmarket 1.40 Snow Light 2.12 Miss Nightfall 2.50 Ebt's Guard (nap) 3.25 Mister Winston 4.00 Italy 4.35 Flora Of Bermuda 5.10 Asgard's Captain Ascot 1.45 Crest Of Fire 2.22 Never So Brave 2.57 Junkanoo 3.30 Orange Sky 4.10 Night Breeze 4.50 Holkham Bay (nb) 5.20 Kosometsuke York 2.00 Remmooz 2.35 Jm Jungle 3.10 Archivist 3.45 Tabletalk 4.15 Amazing Journey 4.45 Terrorise 5.25 Sugar Baby Chester 4.20 Moon Angel 4.55 Rosenpur 5.30 Annaf 6.05 Noble Victory 6.35 Rye 7.10 Bulldog Spirit Salisbury 5.40 Little Miss Magic 6.15 A Bit Of Spirit 6.45 Palio Di Siena 7.20 Soul Dance 7.50 Crystal Mariner 8.20 Emily Rebecca Hamilton 5.50 Stormy Pearl 6.25 Utmost Respect 7.00 Top Juggler 7.30 Spanish Hustle 8.00 Shine On Brendan 8.30 Zebra Star 9.00 Gentle Warri York 3.45 Tabletalk, last year's Melrose winner over course and distance, has been shaping well over shorter trips this year while also threatening to return to winning form when he steps back up to a mile and three-quarters. He is a solid option against likely favourite Al Qareem, who was gifted a soft lead for his win last time out. Newmarket 4.00 Aidan O'Brien's Italy beat a subsequent Royal Ascot runner-up on his debut at Leopardstown in May and can get the better of another once-raced winner, Saba Desert, in what promises to be a fascinating and informative juvenile contest. Ascot 4.50 Having finished well clear in the unfavoured group on the stands' side in the Wokingham last time out, Holkham Bay clearly remains in top form and this return to the minimum trip is unlikely to be an issue.

I'm confident my big Saturday bet is easily the best horse in the race – and he can help land us a 23-1 double

My best bets for Super Saturday MATT CHAPMAN I'm confident my big Saturday bet is easily the best horse in the race – and he can help land us a 23-1 double Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HAS the class of Notable Speech and More Thunder fooled some over their optimum trip? I think so. Ability over distance is a juggling act punters face in many races. 1 Notable Speech is a 2,000 Guineas winner - but he could prove just as brilliant as a sprinter with the drop to 6f in the July Cup Credit: Rex What do I mean by that? Well in an extreme example let's take Frankel – arguably the world's best ever Flat horse – who clearly would have beaten a 70-rated handicap over 2m and a 70-rated sprinter over 5f. Yet Frankel, from the evidence we have, was best at 1m and 1m2f. His class was just something else. Notable Speech has only ever raced over a mile in his ten starts. His victories include the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and his defeats include a fine third in the Breeders' Cup Mile. But if the Charlie Appleby-trained runner had failed in the Guineas he might well have gone sprinting as a three-year-old. On Saturday he finally does that in the Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai July Cup over 6f. It was clearly a late decision, as he was supplemented at a cost of £36,000. But I suspect it will prove inspired. Notable Speech's pedigree suggests speed is what he is all about. His broodmare sire Invincible Spirit won the Haydock Park Sprint. He also has Pivotal in the mix, and he gets fast horses. Lots of milers have done well in the July Cup. Landseer was fourth in the 2002 renewal after landing a French 2000 Guineas, while Alcohol Free banged in the Sussex Stakes and Coronation before taking the 2022 July Cup. Further back remember Chief Singer and Green Desert? They were both placed in 2,000 Guineas and won this very same big sprint. Ajdal landed the July Cup after running in the Derby and Royal Academy took this prize before a thrilling success in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Dream Ahead went from the St James's Palace Stakes to this event having finished fifth at Ascot. Notable Speech was actually seventh in that last year and fourth in the Queen Anne in June. The trip will be no excuse for Notable Speech and his draw looks good. I'm confident he's easily the best horse. Opposition in a big field includes Wathnan improver Flora Of Bermuda – third to owner companion Lazzat in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot – and Whistlejacket, sixth in the Commonwealth Cup but a fine juvenile for Aidan O'Brien and a horse who has been backed down from much bigger prices. He won the July Stakes over course and distance last season but that was on good to soft. Inisherin has the ability to run a big one but was only fifth this time last year when the 11-8 favourite. Believing was poor at Royal Ascot from a bad draw, while Jasour might be the best of the outsiders. It's a marathon on ITV Racing on Saturday, with no fewer than 12 races being shown. It will be hard to keep up. More Thunder is back out for William Haggas in the bet365 Bunbury Cup over 7f after an unlucky second in the Wokingham over 6f at Royal Ascot. That performance came on the back of two Newmarket successes oved 6f. Tom Marquand described the Ascot defeat as 'disgusting', but like Notable Speech it might just be those 6f victories came from class. Sir Michael Stoute ran this boy up to and extended 1m2f last season and he won his novice over 1m2f. Seven furlongs in the Bunbury Cup should be no issue and it's easy to argue he's been crying out for a little further. Who is to say he's not a Group horse masquerading as a handicapper and doesn't end up in something like the Group 1 Foret at the end of the season? If he is then he's chucked in here off 98. There is top class racing at York and Ascot too. At York I'm hoping for a good spin from See That Storm in the John Smith's Cup Handicap over an extended 1m2f. My selection goes for Ed Bethell and Callum Rodriguez and is lightly raced after just nine starts at the age of four. He has a reasonable draw and upped to a mark of 95 - the same here - finished second to Burrito over a little bit further at this track last time. This distance looks ideal and there is no reason why he won't be in the mix again - he has thrived since going to Bethell from the Andrew Balding yard. A notable Saturday.
