Why 77% of Women Aren't Asking for Help — and What That's Costing Us

I've lost count of the number of times I've heard it, whispered in DMs, shared in quiet moments on Peanut, or typed between feeds and bedtimes: 'I didn't want to seem weak. ' Or selfish. Or dramatic. Or ungrateful. Our recent global survey of 2,250 mothers, in partnership with Nuna, laid it bare: 77% of mothers have avoided asking for help due to guilt or shame. Let's just pause on that. That's three in four mothers struggling in silence, not because help wasn't available, but because something in them said they shouldn't need it. They shouldn't want it, and they certainly shouldn't ask for it. It's a symptom of our maternal mental health crisis, but it's also a cultural one. And it's hurting women everywhere. Motherhood has always demanded strength. But somewhere along the way, that strength got distorted into a kind of toxic self-sufficiency. 'You're a mum now, you'll figure it out.' Behind that lie is a dangerous message: needing help means you're failing. We've been conditioned to believe that asking for support is something to feel bad about. That admitting struggle is indulgent. That exhaustion is just part of the job. And when we inevitably crack under the weight of it, we're told to smile through it for our friends, or family, or Instagram. Because look at everything we have, we should be grateful. The result? A generation of women who sit alone in darkened bedrooms, feed through the tears, and carry the invisible weight of a village they don't have. And that's the thing about shame: it thrives in isolation. It multiplies when it has no one to challenge it. Shame convinces us to stay quiet. To retreat. To pretend we're fine because saying otherwise might invite judgement from our family, our friends, other mothers, maybe even worse: strangers. But in that silence, it grows louder. The less we speak it, the more power it holds. Connection is the antidote. On Peanut, we see what happens when mothers feel safe enough to be honest. When one woman says, 'I'm not okay,' and ten others say, 'Me neither.' That kind of connection doesn't fix everything, but it reminds you that you're not broken. Or alone. In that moment of human connection, something shifts. The shame loses its grip. You realise you're not weak, you're just human. It's not oversharing or 'attention seeking' (a horrible phrase, for what it's worth. You deserve attention.) It's about dismantling a narrative that tells mothers they're only strong if they suffer in silence. We build resilience not by pushing through alone, but by reaching out. That's how we start to heal, together. We need to stop applauding martyrdom and start celebrating vulnerability. We need workplaces, families, partners, and platforms that say: asking for help is a strength. We need a cultural shift. Because raising kids, and ourselves in the process, isn't a solo act, it was never meant to be. So to every mother reading this who's been scared to say, 'I need help,' I want you to hear this clearly: You are not failing. You are human. And you deserve support. Let's build a culture where asking isn't shameful, it's expected. Let's bring the village back.

WATCH: Kelly Khumalo and Her Bodyguard Dynamic

Under fire yet unshaken, singer Kelly Khumalo made headlines again not for her vocals, but for the imposing presence of a close protection officer tailing her every move on stage. Kelly Khumalo during the Nuna Official Launch in South Africa at Houghton Hotel's Exclusive Sejour Restaurant on July 08, 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Nuna is a global brand with Dutch roots and has been focusing on creating smart, helpful, and bold baby gear since 2007. (Photo by Gallo Images/OJ Koloti) South African songstress Kelly Khumalo stepped out on stage in full Empress mode this past weekend. She delivered a passionate live performance, accompanied by a heavily armed bodyguard positioned closely behind her throughout her set. Kelly Khumalo is now performing with a bodyguard? — m a s h è s h a 💨 (@_mashesha) July 21, 2025 Dressed in a fashionable ensemble and backed by a full band in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, the Empini hitmaker exuded star power. However, it was the looming figure of her close protection officer (CPO) that stole some of the spotlight. Fans posted the video online. It's speculated that the presence of onstage security could be due to a video post the singer put on her Instagram. Kelly Khumalo and bodyguard Picture X Her clapback on Instagram, following fresh accusations tied to the Senzo Meyiwa court case, has fans and critics on edge. Kelly posted a video clip captioned with a fiery statement: 'From being dragged in that dirty court to sketchy podcasts? You never seize to amaze me. It's quite simple, though; if you strongly believe that I am capable of what you are accusing me of, come and get me and stop playing games! ❗️Till then, BACK OFF! #EmpressFELIZWE 👏🏽🐆' Her post comes hot on the heels of viral claims made on MacG's Podcast and Chill by controversial former advocate Malesela Teffo. Teffo alleged in a no-holds-barred interview that Senzo Meyiwa's death was not the result of a robbery gone wrong. Instead, he said it was an accidental shooting by Kelly during an argument. The July 17th episode has since racked up millions of views. While the public remains sharply divided, Kelly's sister Zandie Khumalo has slammed the renewed accusations and stood by her sister. On the 2022 season of Showmax's Life With Kelly Khumalo, the star shared her growing concerns for her safety. 'Security for me is literally everything,' Kelly admitted in her video diary. 'My last gig in KwaZulu-Natal, I received a threat two days before that they were going to kill me.' The singer also revealed that planning her Gospel Explosion concert in the Vaal included coordination with law enforcement officials due to ongoing threats. 'I have my CPO, a close private officer; they are officers of the law, just private ones. So they can arrest you.' This isn't the first time Kelly has performed with heightened security. The dramatic visual of a guard shadowing her every move on stage sent a clear message: she's not backing down. As the pressure mounts and speculation around Senzo's tragic death continues, Kelly Khumalo is choosing the mic and muscle to defend her name.

ILLUSTRATION: FORBES / PHOTO: RETAILER If you're constantly on the go, the Nuna Mixx Next is designed to make your travels seamless while prioritizing safety above all else. The lightweight, convertible system opens effortlessly and collapses into a compact shape for easy transport. It features a self-guiding buckle that automatically snaps into place, can be positioned forward-facing or rear-facing in the car and includes an auto-reclining footrest for secure placement. We also love that it's summer-friendly with an extendable UPF 50+ canopy to shield your little one from the sun and a removable mesh seat to help keep them cool. Our tester appreciated that the travel system can be used straight from birth without the need for a separate car seat or bassinet attachment—an ideal feature for those with limited storage space. They also found it to be a great option for taller parents, thanks to the extendable handlebar. The only potential downside is the relatively small seat, which may not accommodate your child through all toddler years, depending on how quickly they grow. Other helpful additions include the seat's Aeroflex foam that keeps your baby comfortable during extended periods of time, alongside a five-part harness and side-impact protection for added security. Weighing in at just seven pounds, it's lightweight and easy enough for parents to handle solo. This Nuna travel system doesn't go on sale often, especially at this low of a price. Whether you're preparing for your baby's arrival or are looking to upgrade to a higher-quality system, now's the ideal time to take the plunge. Grab one of our team's top rated-stroller picks for 25% off while you can.
