2027 Jaguar EV Type 00 Spied Near Nurburgring

The latest car news, reviews, and features. The next era of Jaguar is currently being developed before our eyes. The first of three EVs expected to debut later in 2025 has been spied prowling the public streets surrounding the Nurburgring in Germany. The EV is a large grand tourer and will be the production variant of the Type 00 concept car shown in 2024. Despite the heavy camouflage, the electric prototype for the production car clearly resembles the Type 00 concept's design. Unrealistic elements from the concept such as the slit-like lighting appears to be replaced by functional production-intent units. The mile-long hood will make it to production despite the lack of a gas-powered engine. Jaguar's toned down the rear end a bit while making the leap from concept to reality with a more tapered, practical, set of lines. It's unclear at this point whether the production car will have a glass rear window or forego that practical piece of visibility in the name of design like the concept car. A large charging port door can be seen on the driver-side front fender. Despite the concept having two doors, the production car will be a four-door with frameless windows. Expect seating for four adults, though the back seat may skimp on legroom compared to a Bentley Flying Spur. Yes, Bentley Flying Spur, and Rolls-Royce Ghost. Those will be the competition when the production iteration of the Type 00 arrives. Jaguar's rebrand is intended to move the iconic automaker upmarket into a low-volume, high margin status symbol brand. The previous business plan of volume with the XE and E-Pace sedan and crossovers, which were meant to chase after BMW 3-Series and X3 sales, will be a distant memory. The rebranding has not gone without missteps. The outsourced situation led to reported infighting within the automaker. The Type 00 will ride on a new platform dubbed Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Little is known about the platform outside of the ability to have up to 1,000 horsepower and up to 430 miles of driving range with up to 23-inch wheels. Jaguar has claimed the electrical architecture will be capable of adding up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes when hooked to a DC fast charger. Expect the production version of the Type 00 to go on sale in 2026 and cost more than $150,000. An SUV and sedan variant are expected to arrive shortly after. Got a tip? Drop us a line at tips@

Racing driver Rolf Scheibner rushed to hospital after terrifying crash at track Max Verstappen branded ‘too dangerous'

RACING driver Rolf Scheibner was rushed to hospital after a terrifying crash at the Nurburgring – a course which even Formula One champion Max Verstappen once dubbed 'too dangerous.' Scheibner's Aston Martin was sent spinning in a high-speed horrific collision during a 24 hour race at the infamous German track, which has seen an estimated 170 deaths from both public and private races since its opening in 1927. 6 6 6 6 The ace, who has since been given the all-clear by docs, was taken out by rival Kevin Estre during a tight turn at the Nurburgring. Scheibner was in control of the track when Estre, behind the wheel of a Porsche 911, snuck up the inside of the bend. Neither man relented as both cars flew round the track. But as they took the turn, the nose of Estre's vehicle made contact with Scheibner's car. And it turned the Aston Martin sideways before Scheibner went ploughing into a barrier. The force of the collision saw his motor spin upside down before hurtling back across the track. But Scheibner was amazingly able to escape from his Aston Martin, which was left severely damaged. He was then rushed to hospital for precautionary checks and released after getting the all clear from medical professionals. However, Estre ended up in hot water and was even confronted by some of Scheibner's teammates when summoned to see the stewards. He was given a telling off for his role in the crash and was hit with a 100 second penalty. Fox Sports viewers spot cameraman's embarrassing moment live during IndyCar Series 6 6 The Nurburgring, which has hosted 42 F1 Grand Prix races, was recently branded 'too dangerous' by current champ Verstappen. And he insisted the sport will never return there following its last outing in 2013. He told Formula 1 Magazine: '(A return) is really not going to happen with the cars we have now. 'One thing is for sure: F1 there will never happen again. Far too dangerous.'

Volkswagen GTI Edition 50 Revealed With Golf R-Rivaling Horsepower

Introducing the new king of FWD hatchbacks A few days after confirming that it's the quickest production Volkswagen around the Nurburgring, the brand has officially taken the covers off the Golf GTI Edition 50. It arrives at the perfect time for the iconic Golf nameplate, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. With this reveal, we have more insight into how VW managed to get a front-wheel-drive GTI around the famous Green Hell more quickly than the all-wheel-drive Golf R, which is quite an achievement. Thanks to a Performance Package and even more power than we were expecting, this hottest Golf GTI achieved a Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds. Nearly As Powerful As Golf R The final specs are in, and this is clearly no ordinary GTI. Whereas the standard GTI produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque (making it slightly less powerful than the European GTI), the GTI Edition 50 gets achingly close to the Golf R with outputs of 321 hp and 310 lb-ft. That's only 7 hp less than the R, and torque is exactly the same. This GTI is also more powerful than the Civic Type R (315 hp), often considered the king of FWD hot hatchbacks. Riding on a special Performance chassis, VW used half a century of experience in developing the GTI to perfect this model. The Golf VIII GTI Clubsport was used as a starting point, before the team added semi-slick tires and more precise steering. The front differential lock was also tuned for this application. Source: Volkswagen Go for the GTI Performance package, and the car gets higher spring rates, a further lowering of the ride height, special suspension mounts, lighter forged wheels, a weight-saving Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, and 235 Potenza Race semi-slick tires from Bridgestone. The cumulative effect of these changes left racing driver Benjamin Leuchter deeply impressed. 'For me, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is the most precise and sporty Volkswagen I've ever driven,' says Leuchter. 'It reminds me a lot of the Golf GTI Clubsport S from 2016. However, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 has been systematically enhanced once again. Because it's so intuitive and precise, I have a lot of confidence in the car and can really push it to the limit.' Sporty Looks Match Record Pace Outside, the GTI Edition 50 gets a choice of five exterior colors: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Tornado Red, and Dark Moss Green. The red is especially closely tied to various VW performance cars from the past, including the Golf VR6 Mk3. GTI 50 logos, a black roof and mirrors, and a distinctive side stripe combine to visually differentiate this special Golf. Inside, the nostalgic check pattern has been applied to the supportive seats, which has red detailing. The GTI 50 logo can be found on the steering wheel, which also houses paddles for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. 'The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is our fastest and most powerful GTI to date. With the optional Performance package, we have taken the GTI concept to a whole new level,' explains Sebastian Willmann, Head of the Chassis Development and Driving Dynamics Department at VW. There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but we expect a figure far above the $32,445 starting price of the normal GTI. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Reaching High out of luck for the King and Queen in Ascot Stakes

A first horse trained by Willie Mullins to carry the royal colours, Reaching High was the 11-4 favourite in the hands of Ryan Moore – but while he looked full of running rounding the home turn, he was all dressed up with nowhere to go against the rail and when he did eventually get out it was all too late. Up front Henry de Bromhead's fellow Irish raider Ascending (20-1) knuckled down under Billy Lee in the concluding stages of the two-and-a-half-mile contest to beat Nurburgring, with the latter's trainer Joseph O'Brien also saddling the third and fourth home in Comfort Zone and Leinster. Queen Camilla watches the Ascot Stakes (Andrew Matthews/PA) Mullins said: 'Ryan just said he got no run. He's finished full of running, but just got no luck in running, so it's disappointing. 'Their Majesties are very easy, lovely people to train for and it's a pleasure. There's a bit more pressure when you train one for them at this meeting, but to bring one here with a real chance is what we like to do. Hopefully this fellow will show us how good he is at some stage later in the season.' Mullins added: 'Poniros (17th) was probably a little too keen and had run his race before he got to the straight, so it's back to the drawing board with him.' As for the winner, De Bromhead explained the Ascot Stakes was not even his first choice. Ascending held off Nurburgring (David Davies/PA) 'I'm delighted. I wanted to go for the mile and six (Copper Horse Stakes), I thought he had a great chance but he didn't get in so we ran in this one and now we've won – happy days,' said De Bromhead. 'He's just a star. He was bought to go hurdling and he ran very well over hurdles but he never really loved it, so we said we'd go back on the Flat. 'I think we'll stay on the Flat, he seems to love it so I think we should. 'Billy opted to go out and get a bit of light, the horse travelled beautifully and he gave him a super ride. He knew he had a kick so he used the kick a bit earlier than he had planned. 'It's amazing to win any of these races, we're fortunate enough to train good horses. We're very lucky.'

Upcoming VW Golf GTI Edition 50 Crushes Golf R's Nurburgring Time

New Performance Pack Unlocks The Best Of The GTI Volkswagen has proved yet again that it's one of the hot hatch authorities, with its new Golf GTI Edition 50 setting a new record for production VWs around the Nurburgring. Referred to as a 'near-production test vehicle' by VW, this special GTI set a time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds. That surpasses the time of seven minutes and 47.31 seconds set by the Golf R 20th Anniversary edition, a time achieved in 2022. GTI's Time Impressive For A Front-Wheel-Drive Hatch Unlike the all-wheel-drive Golf R, the GTI sends power to the front wheels only, yet it's always remained fun to drive despite its FWD setup. The record-breaking time was set across the 12.9-mile route of the course, and an even quicker time of seven minutes and 41.27 seconds was achieved over the slightly shorter 12.8-mile stretch. The GTI 50 was not quite able to dethrone the Honda Civic Type R, which remains the FWD hot hatch king. The hottest Civic completed the 12.9-mile lap in a time of seven minutes and 44.88 seconds. Although we don't know if this GTI improves upon the normal GTi's 241 horsepower, it's highly unlikely to match the Type R's 315 hp, which is more Golf R territory. Still, the GTI 50 gets close, thanks to an optional Performance package with lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tires from Bridgestone. These are wrapped around lightweight forged wheels, which lower unsprung and rotating masses. A performance-tuned chassis is also part of this package, which was equipped to the GTI that completed this latest effort at the Green Hell. Racing Driver Raves About GTi's Precision Benny Leuchter was behind the wheel of the GTI Edition 50 for this run, and was left blown away by the car. He was a good choice for the job, having driven the Golf GTI Clubsport S for the brand's first lap record nearly a decade ago. He did the same in the Golf R 20 Years in 2022. 'The entire setup of the Golf GTI Edition 50 means you can drive the ideal line of the Nordschleife with high precision,' said Leuchter. 'If you really want to be fast on the track known as the 'Green Hell', the car also has to compensate for the typical bumps in the ground and reach very high cornering speeds. This is exactly what the Golf GTI Edition 50 achieves in perfection. The aplomb with which it masters the peculiarities of the legendary Nordschleife is cool: the GTI is instantly stable over the entire 20.8 kilometers.' A full reveal of the record-breaking GTI Edition 50 is set for June 20. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile
