Minister urges Muslims to respect burial grounds, avoid superstition
Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Some individuals allegedly taking soil from the grave of Nurly Shahirah Azman in the belief that it brings blessings. - BERNAMA Kuala Lumpur: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, has called on Muslims to uphold proper burial etiquette and avoid practices that contradict Islamic teachings. His statement follows reports of individuals collecting soil from graves, believing it holds blessings. Mohd Na'im emphasised that visiting graves should serve as a reminder of mortality and encourage prayers for the deceased, not as an opportunity for superstitious acts. 'I have followed news reports about certain individuals allegedly taking soil from the grave of Nurly Shahirah Azman in the belief that it brings blessings. Such action is deplorable and goes against the principles of Islamic faith,' he said in a Facebook post. He warned against actions that could lead to shirk (associating partners with God) and urged Muslims to adhere to Islamic law. The minister also commended Nurly Shahirah's family for their measured response and the religious authorities for monitoring burial sites. Nurly Shahirah, a 23-year-old hafizah (Quran memoriser), was among the 15 UPSI students who died in a bus crash in Gerik earlier this month. Her family installed barriers at her grave in Kampung Gong Pasir Muslim Cemetery, Terengganu, to prevent further misuse. Mohd Na'im called for prayers for Nurly Shahirah's soul and strength for her family. The government continues efforts to counter superstitious practices and reinforce Islamic values. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Stop exploiting her name': Family forced to cordon off UPSI crash victim's grave amid surge in superstition seekers, supernatural claims
BESUT, June 29 – The grave of Nurly Shahirah Azman, who died in a bus crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik, Perak, has been cordoned off by her family to prevent superstitious activities at the burial site. Sinar Harian reported that her brothers and a relative installed the barrier rope at around 6.30pm on Saturday at the Kampung Gong Pasir Muslim Cemetery in Kerandang here. 'We appreciate all the prayers offered for her, but we urge people not to engage in superstitious acts or exploit her name for personal gain,' her brother, Mohd Najmuddin Azman, reportedly said. 'Our family set up this barrier to curb such unhealthy practices and to remind the public to observe proper decorum when visiting the grave.' The family also planted shrubs and laid small white stones over the grave to cover the soil. Mohd Najmuddin said the family would also conduct periodic patrols as people continued to visit the grave since the day of the accident. This comes as a Facebook user alleged that some visitors had taken soil from the grave and smeared it on their children's faces. He also warned that the Besut Islamic religious office will take action against those found performing superstitious rituals at the grave site. Another Facebook user also claimed that the grave had a fragrant scent, and that they had come to visit in order for blessings to rub off on them. Nurly Shahirah, 23, was a hafizah — one who memorises the Quran. She was among 15 UPSI students who died when a bus carrying 42 passengers veered off the East-West Highway near Gerik on June 9. Hundreds have visited her family's home and grave, seeking supernatural blessings and boons — with viral social media posts even showing the direction to reach there. A total of 48 individuals were involved in the incident, with 13 pronounced dead at the scene and two more succumbing to injuries in hospital.

Family comforted by visits
Thousands pay their respects at late UPSI student's home daily JERTIH: A week has passed since the tragic bus accident on the East-West Highway near Gerik, Perak, but the home of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student Nurly Shahirah Azman continues to receive some 1,000 people daily. Her brother, Mohd Najmuddin, 28, said people from across the country have been arriving to convey their condolences and view the handwritten Quran manuscript completed by the late student. 'People have come from as far as Penang to offer their sympathies to our parents and see the mushaf (manuscript) that was meticulously copied by hand by my sister. 'Some arrive as early as after the Subuh prayers, and it's only around Maghrib that the house becomes a bit quieter,' he told Bernama when met at their home in Kampung Gong Pasir here yesterday. He said aside from family members, neighbours and fellow villagers have also been helping to prepare meals and drinks for the guests. Meanwhile, Nurly Shahirah's father, Azman Mohamad, 63, said the outpouring of support, including from strangers, has provided some comfort as the family copes with their loss. In the early morning of June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed when the chartered bus they were travelling in from Jertih to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the JRTB in Gerik. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the MPV. In Ipoh, UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff called on the university's faculty members, deans and lecturers to help in managing the affected students' welfare. In an online briefing held yesterday, Md Amin highlighted the need to support the families of the students who perished in the crash as well as their injured colleagues. He urged academic staff to ensure that matters related to the affected students' exams, assignments and academic affairs are properly managed, whether the students are recovering in hospital or at home. 'Do everything possible so that these students do not have to defer their studies despite being in pain and going through hardship. 'We have many flexible learning system. Make sure they are not left behind. 'These children need our attention, our assistance and our encouragement. 'We must ensure none of them are left to struggle or end up failing not because they didn't try, but because we failed to support them,' said Md Amin. He also reminded staff and other students to be mindful of the classmates of those who died or were injured. 'Imagine preparing a presentation with five names, but only three students show up. Imagine a dormitory where four used to stay, and only two remain,' said Md Amin in his message.
