Judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohammed Redza meted out the sentence to the 54-year-old woman and ordered her to serve her prison term from the date of her arrest on June 28. The court also imposed a two-year good behaviour bond and ordered her to perform 40 hours of community service within four months after completing her prison sentence. The accused, who was the guardian of a 13-year-old girl, was charged with abusing the victim by hitting her with a piece of wood, a mortar and pestle, as well as slashing her body with a knife, causing physical injuries. The offence was committed at a house in Taman Bendahara, Kuala Selangor, in June. She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the accused, who had been caring for the victim since infancy, had physically assaulted and abused the girl, resulting in broken teeth and multiple injuries on her body. Investigations and a medical examination confirmed that the injuries sustained were consistent with physical abuse. Several videos of the incident went viral on social media, with some showing the injuries the victim had sustained on her hands and head. Photo: Screenshot of the viral videos. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Nor Hakimi Mohamad Rosedin urged the court to impose a proportionate and deterrent sentence as a lesson to both the accused and the wider community, citing the public interest and the alarming frequency of child abuse cases. "The accused has committed a serious offence under Section 52B of the Penal Code. I respectfully request the court to review the photographs of the victim's injuries, which clearly show that the accused failed in her responsibilities as the victim's guardian,' he said. "The accused's actions have left both physical and psychological scars on her adopted child, who is now suffering from trauma,' he added. Meanwhile, lawyer Khairul Hazwan Rashid Mohd Redduan from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented the accused, appealed for the prison sentence to commence from the date of her arrest. He also said that his client is unable to pay any fine, as she has no source of income and her husband is currently serving a prison sentence for a drug-related offence. - BERNAMA

Housewife gets eight years for abusing adoptive daughter using kitchen tools
KUALA SELANGOR: A housewife was sentenced to eight years in jail by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to assaulting her 13-year-old adoptive daughter from a young age using a stick, slashing her with a knife, and hitting her with a mortar and pestle. The court heard that the 54-year-old woman had continuously abused the girl, whom she had adopted since the victim was a baby, causing her to suffer broken teeth and multiple bodily injuries. The court was also told that the victim had her fingernails ripped off, was barred from attending school, survived on only a bread bun almost daily, and wore the same clothes every day. Judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohammed Redza ordered the housewife to serve the jail term from her arrest on June 28 and imposed a two-year good behaviour bond on her. She also ordered the housewife to perform 40 hours of community service in the span of four months after she completes her jail sentence. The woman was charged with committing the acts on the girl, an offence under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act which provides a maximum 20-year jail term or a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or both upon conviction. She was arrested by the Kuala Selangor district police's Criminal Investigation Department investigating officer and detectives at a house in Taman Bendahara on June 28. Her heinous acts came to light after S. George Wilson, the president of non-governmental organisation Persatuan Kebajikan Ikhlas Johor Malaysia lodged a report on the abuse at 6.40pm at the Kuala Selangor police station on the same day. George was alerted by a neighbour who had long suspected the girl was being mistreated. Investigations and medical checks on the girl by medical officers from the Tanjung Karang Hospital confirmed that there were physical injuries due to abuse. National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Khairul Hazwan Rashid Mohd Redduan asked the court to impose a light sentence. "She does not have an income and her husband has been jailed for a drug offence. "If she is to be jailed, I ask that it begin from the date of her arrest," he said. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Nor Hakimi Mohamad Rosedin asked the court to hand down a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the accused and society, and to consider rampant abuse cases. "The accused committed a serious crime as defined under Section 52B of the code. "I ask the court to review the pictures of injuries inflicted on the victim, which show the cruel acts of the accused. "The victim is the accused's adoptive daughter. But the accused, instead of carrying out her responsibilities, had abused the victim and left not just physical injuries but mental trauma," he said. rescued the teenager from years of alleged abuse and neglect at the hands of the adoptive mother.
