The 2026 BMW M2 CS has set a new lap record for compact cars around the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit. The lap was piloted by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, who maneuvered the M2 CS to an official lap time of 7:25.534. Weidinger's new time is nearly eight seconds faster than the previous record holder and more than 13 seconds faster than the previous best M2. Lap records at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit can be fleeting, but that doesn't make them any less impressive. The 2026 BMW M2 CS not only set a new lap record for compact cars around the famous German circuit but also demolished the previous record by nearly eight seconds. BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger piloted the M2 CS to a time of 7:25.534, making it both the first M2 and the first compact car under the 7:30 mark. Weidinger's lap is nearly eight seconds faster than the 7:33.123 set by the Audi RS3, which formerly held the class record. It's also more than 13 seconds faster than the previous best time for an M2, with Weidinger setting a lap time of 7:38.706 in a standard M2 in 2023. Perhaps more impressive than either of those metrics, the new M2 CS's time is three seconds faster than the M3 CS's time set in 2023, despite being down 20 horsepower. BMW The base M2 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and makes 473 horsepower. Torque figures for the standard car are split based on transmission, with three-pedal cars rated at 406 pound-feet and two-pedal cars at 443 pound-feet. The M2 CS has significantly more gusto. While it uses the same engine, the CS is rated at 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It's not just brawnier, the M2 CS is leaner than the base car too. Between the aluminum wheels, carbon buckets, and various other carbon bits and bobs, the CS is nearly 100 pounds lighter than the standard car. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf.

Chevy Will Soon Reveal the New Corvette ZR1's 'Ring Time: Teaser

The Chevy Corvette ZR1 appears to have lapped the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife, and a teaser suggests we will soon learn its official lap time. A video posted on the Corvette's Instagram account shows a yellow ZTK-equipped car lapping the track with the caption: "Fast as green hell." An online report from earlier this month claims Chevy was recently testing multiple Corvettes at the 'Ring, so the company may release several official times. Will the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 make history and become the fastest American-made production car to ever lap the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife? Based on a new teaser video posted on the Corvette's official Instagram account, we will find out very soon. The post shows a yellow-painted car with the optional ZTK performance package—judging by its unmistakably massive rear wing—roaring down a straight section of the famous German racetrack before braking and downshifting as it enters a tight left-handed corner. A caption on the video post reads: "Fast as green hell." It's unclear if the Vette in the video is the 1064-hp rear-drive ZR1 or the 1250-hp hybrid all-wheel-drive ZR1X. It's also possible that Chevy has lap times for the ZR1, ZR1X, and the Z06, as earlier this month CorvetteBlogger reported that the bow-tie brand was spied lapping several production cars that included those three variants at the 'Ring. It's also worth pointing out that Chevy hasn't yet published an official lap time for any C7- or C8-generation Corvette. The Corvette aims to dethrone the Ford Mustang GTD, which earlier this year recorded an official lap time of 6:52.072, making it the fastest American production car to lap the 'Ring and the fifth fastest production car overall. The cars that are faster and provide other bogeys for the ZR1 and/or ZR1X include the Porsche 991 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance kit (6:43.300), the Mercedes-AMG Black Series (6:48.047), and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (6:49.328). Currently, the top spot for a production car is held by the Mercedes-AMG One, which set a time of 6 minutes and 29 seconds. That's crazy. But it's worth noting that Chevy shared the teaser on June 28 (a.k.a. 6/28)—is that just a coincidence or perhaps a clue? Stay tuned. This Chinese Sedan Is Faster Than Every Supercar Around the Nürburgring

If you still aren't taking China's EVs seriously, here's further proof that you should. A caged, stripped-out Xiaomi SU7 Ultra prototype lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 6 minutes, 22 seconds—24 seconds quicker than its previous lap set in 2024 . That means an electric prototype from China is quicker than any production car—gas-powered or otherwise—around the legendary circuit. After seeing the numbers, we aren't surprised. This SU7 Ultra prototype makes 1,548 horsepower from its tri-motor configuration, able to zoom to 62 miles per hour in just 1.98 seconds and on to a top speed of 217 mph. This particular car is not a production model, but a stripped-out, caged track car that's been lightweighted to improve performance. It also used full-on racing slicks for maximum grip. Photo by: Xiaomi Only three vehicles have ever lapped the Nürburgring quicker: the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, the Volkswagen ID.R , and the Porsche 956, back in 1983. Xiaomi says it was able to achieve this time "under optimal conditions," which were likely cooler and cloudier than the time set last year. While you won't be able to buy this one-off record-smasher, Xiaomi is launching a new Nürburgring edition for its road-going SU7 Ultra sedan to celebrate. You get a roll cage and a host of carbon fiber trim, including a carbon hood and a carbon rear spoiler. Underneath, there are carbon underbody aero panels that add up to 97 pounds of downforce. Inside, you get a set of sweet Sparco bucket seats embroidered with the Nürburgring's logo, as well as six-point harnesses. The Nürburgring edition also comes standard with the SU7 Ultra's Track package, which includes things like Endless brake pads, Bilstein EVO R height-adjustable coilovers, a carbon fiber roof, and 21-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli Trofeo RS tires. Photo by: Xiaomi Photo by: Xiaomi Xiaomi plans to build just 100 examples of the SU7 Ultra Nürburgring edition, priced from 814,900 Chinese Yuan, or around $114,000. Like all Chinese-branded vehicles, you won't be able to purchase this one in the United States. A shame. More on Xiaomi 'I Don't Want to Give It Up.' World's Coolest Mercedes 190E Ready To Take On The Nurburgring

HWA's Merecedes-Benz 190E restomod gears up for a public demo of its mettle at the Nürburgring. AMG-Bred 190E Restomod To Make Track Debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours It's not often that a restomod earns the right to go toe-to-toe with today's top-tier performance cars, but the HWA Evo isn't your typical nostalgia project. Developed by HWA AG – the engineering powerhouse established by AMG co-founder Hans Werner Aufrecht – this modern-day reincarnation of the iconic Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II is finally ready to prove its mettle. And not just on any track: it's headed for the Nürburgring Nordschleife during one of motorsport's most iconic weekends. Set to make its first public demonstration at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, two HWA EVO prototypes will run demo laps during the race weekend. The car will also be on display at the Adenauer Racing Day on June 18 and in Corso laps on June 20 and 21, with a permanent presence at the Nürburgring paddock stand throughout the weekend. Not Your Typical Restomod Unlike many modern restomods, the HWA Evo is far more than a vintage shell with a new engine. Each car begins life as a Mercedes W201 donor vehicle, which is then stripped to its steel bones. HWA reinforces and rebuilds it with custom aluminum and high-strength steel subframes, replacing 75% of the original chassis and doubling its torsional rigidity. The result is a motorsport-grade structure with an OEM-level finish. Mounted in a front-mid-engine configuration is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 – believed to come from the AMG C43 – pumping out 493 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque, controlled by a bespoke HWA ECU. For electronics, HWA partnered with Bosch Engineering to develop a custom ESP system featuring ABS and a tailored control unit – a feature not typically found in an average restomod. The rest includes billet-machined suspension components, KW adjustable dampers, H&R anti-roll bars, and Brembo brakes with optional carbon ceramics. All of it wrapped in a full carbon fiber body crafted for both strength, lightweight advantage, and aerodynamic finesse. For its Nürburgring shakedown, one of the HWA Evo prototypes features a special livery reminiscent of the original Evo II's racing roots, particularly its dominance during the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters' 1992 season. Only 100 units of the HWA Evo will be produced, each priced around $760,000. Most have already been spoken for, but if you're lucky, there might still be a few slots left. In any case, if you have the means, a visit to the Nürburgring next weekend will earn you the right to witness this track beast up close. About the Author Jacob Oliva View Profile
