Moscow warns of deepfake ‘informational barbarism'
The increasing availability of deepfake technology is pushing the world into 'informational barbarism,' Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned, urging news agencies to increase investment in fact-checking and video verification. Zakharova identified deepfakes as global concern during a workshop at the 19th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), which Russia hosted last week. Malicious actors are using every opportunity to deploy 'poison pills of lies' against their targets, and are turning to generative content to achieve their aims, the diplomat said. 'Just a couple of years ago deepfake was a novelty that could only confuse people, but now the quality and quantity of deepfake videos raises the question whether humanity is equipped to deal with such attacks,' Zakharova said. 'I don't have a definitive answer.' The Russian Foreign Ministry works to disprove falsified content involving its staff, including Minister Sergey Lavrov and Zakharova herself. But as mount of fake content increases, so does the time required to counter them, she said. The problem is multifaceted, as seen in the growing use of deepfakes by scammers, and demands a 'systemic and comprehensive' international response. 'It is self-evident that news agencies and leading media outlets need entire sections dedicated to fact-checking that are trained to detect technological tricks, which are used to present non-credible information as credible,' she said. News agencies are naturally at the forefront of the fight against falsified imagery, since they handle the largest flow of raw information in the media ecosystem, Zakharova pointed out. The Foreign Ministry launched a dedicated campaign against 'fake news' in 2017 and has since released more than 5,000 regular rebuttals and 350 in-depth exposés of what it considers informational attacks against Russia's national interests, the official said.

Anadolu Reelected Vice President Of Oana

PETERSBURG, June 21 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Turkiye's state-run news agency Anadolu was reelected vice president of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) on Friday, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. The 19th General Assembly of OANA was held at the Expoforum in St. Petersburg as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), hosted by the Russian Tass news agency. Anadolu was represented by its President and CEO, Serdar Karagoz and Strategic Communication and Brand Management Director, Hazal Duran. bootstrap slideshow Following its presidency term from 2010 to 2013, Anadolu has now been elected to the Executive Board and vice presidency of OANA for a fifth consecutive time. During the General Assembly, the OANA presidency for the 2025 - 2028 term was handed over from Iran's official news agency, IRNA, to Tass. Tass General Director Andrey Kondrashov assumed the presidency of OANA, while Tass Deputy General Director Mikhail Gusman was elected secretary-general. Azerbaijan's state news agency, AZERTAC, was selected to host the 2028 General Assembly. The event concluded with a group photo of representatives from OANA member agencies. Formed in 1961 on UNESCO's initiative, OANA promotes and facilitates cooperation among member agencies to serve their common interests and help them exchange information and experience.

ST. PETERSBURG, June 20 (Bernama-TASS) -- Russian state news agency TASS has been unanimously elected as chair of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) until 2028. The decision was made during the plenary meeting of the 19th OANA General Assembly held in St. Petersburg, TASS news agency reported. TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov was also elected president of OANA for the duration of the chairmanship, while TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman will serve as the organisation's secretary-general.

The message was delivered in a video address to participants of the plenary session of the organisation's 19th General Assembly, hosted by TASS agency. OANA was established in 1961 at the initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

News agencies look at modern challenges
ST PETERSBURG: Oman News Agency (ONA) took part in the General Assembly meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), held on Thursday in St Petersburg, Russia, under the theme 'News Agencies and the Challenges of the Modern World." The event, attended by over 40 government and private news agencies, coincided with the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, a two-day event hosted under the auspices of President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation. In his opening address, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasised the critical role of news agencies in delivering credible journalism and countering misinformation, particularly amid today's rapidly evolving global developments. Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, highlighted the importance of protecting journalists in conflict zones, especially in armed conflicts, given their vital role in reporting facts and exposing the humanitarian suffering of war victims. The OANA General Assembly addressed key topics, including the risks of disinformation and its impact on news credibility — particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence technologies — as well as the experiences of international agencies transitioning from traditional broadcasting to digital platforms in an era of accelerating media innovation. The meeting also included votes on the Executive Council composition for 2025–2028, the formation of the Technical and Ethical Committee for the same term, and the OANA Presidential Board for 2028–2031. Additionally, the assembly announced election results for the new OANA President and Secretary-General, presented awards, and approved reports from the Executive and Technical Councils, along with the appointment of vice-presidents. - ONA
