Miane Smit's Caribbean 'fun' sets her up for a place in the Proteas Women's World Cup squad

MIANE SMIT Proteas youngster Miane Smit celebrates her half-century in the third T20I against West Indies. Picture: Supplied Image: Supplied The Proteas Women's team may have lost a second successive T20I series since finishing runners-up at last year's ICC T20 World Cup, but they are beginning to unearth a group of promising youngsters to take the team forward. The squad's dependence on a core group of senior players has long been a concerning factor, but there are signs that the next generation are starting to stake a claim for more prominent roles. Last month's ODI Tri-Series, involving hosts Sri Lanka and India, saw allrounder Annerie Dercksen take centre stage by dominating with the bat, which was highlighted by her maiden ODI century. Although it would have been hoped that Dercksen would build on the momentum in the Caribbean during the subsequent ODI and T20I series against the West Indies - although that had more to do with how low she bats in the line-up than anything else - there has been another young player, Miane Smit, that has now put up her hand. Next Stay Close ✕ Smit, aged just 20, was handed her T20I debut during the Windies series, and showed her vast potential with an unbeaten 59 off just 38 balls (7x4,1x6) in the series-decider to lift the Proteas to a respectable 147/6 after the visitors had slumped to 90/5 with just five overs remaining. While Smit's late innings blitz was not enough to get the Proteas over the line, and ultimately the series win, the Bloemfontein youngster has now put her name in the reckoning for a ticket to the World Cup later this year. 'Yeah, it was disappointing. I think we didn't have enough runs on the board, especially the way we adapted to conditions, and we knew it wasn't the easiest wicket to bat on,' Smit said. 'Maybe few partnerships too short, so maybe we could have had 10 or 15 rounds. I think we sort of let it slip. 'But (personally) it was very cool. Yeah, I think I played a bit smarter today. I didn't force any boundaries where I just rotated very well and waited for the balls. 'And especially towards the end of the innings where we looked to maximise. I thought our options were quite clear and we capitalised at the end. 'Lots of learnings to take (from the tour) and I think it's a good build-up. The way we have thought about things and the plans we have for leading up to the World Cup.' 🌟 Take a bow, Miané Smit! 🌟 A brilliant innings just when it mattered most. Clutch, composed, and full of class 💪🇿🇦 In the heat of this series decider, Miané stands tall and delivers when her team needs it most 🔥🏏. #AlwaysRising #WozaNawe — Proteas Women (@ProteasWomenCSA) June 23, 2025

Waseem and Tryon named ICC Players of the Month for May 2025

· The UAE's Muhammad Waseem wins men's award for the second time after fine performances in both ODIs and T20Is · South Africa's Chloe Tryon wins maiden award for her all-round effort in the Sri Lanka ODI Tri-Series · More about the ICC Player of the Month awards is available here . The United Arab Emirates batter Muhammad Waseem and South Africa all-rounder Chloe Tryon have been named as the ICC Men's and Women's Players of the Month for May 2025. Waseem wins the award for the second time after a string of good performances in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 and a home T20I series against Bangladesh. The 31-year-old scored 169 runs in five ODIs batting in the middle order and was the Player of the Series in the series against Bangladesh in Sharjah which his side won 2-1. He led the team in this T20I series and scored 54 and 82 in the first two matches opening the batting. Waseem, who also won the award in April 2024, edged all-rounders Brendon McMullen of Scotland and Milind Kumar of the United States. Tryon had a memorable tour of Sri Lanka as she scored 176 runs at a strike-rate of 131.34 in three ODIs and took six wickets in the three-team tournament in Colombo that also featured India. Tryon had scores of 67 (against India), 35 and 74 (against Sri Lanka) but the highlight was a haul of five for 34 against Sri Lanka which included a hat-trick. The West Indies captain Haley Matthews and India batter Jemimah Rodrigues were the others shortlisted for the monthly award this time. Mohammad Waseem said: 'I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award for the second time. I want to thank the ICC and all the fans who voted for me. I also want to thank all my team members and support staff as this award is as much for them as it is for me. "The month of May brought us a historic series win over Bangladesh in Sharjah. The victory indicates the growth of UAE cricket and the depth of talent in the country. The series was won due to a total team effort and what delighted me the most was the performance of the debutants and the youngsters in the squad who displayed incredible passion and heart. "Our aim is now to continue our progress and not only compete but beat bigger teams and make our presence felt in major international events. I am sure that with the current lot of players, UAE cricket will continue to thrive and prosper. I would also want to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for their support and backing. "At an individual level, my aim would be to work even harder, to stay consistent and to play according to the demands of modern day T20 game for the benefit of our team." Chloe Tryon said: 'I probably didn't expect this award, but I see it as a great achievement. I've been trying to find consistency for a while, so I'm happy that it finally came together in Sri Lanka. 'Hopefully, I can build on those performances and help the team through the big year ahead. We've got a World Cup at the end of the year, so I'm hoping to continue being consistent for the team. 'I am really happy at my five-wicket effort and the hat-trick. I was pretty tired most of the time, but I'm happy to have achieved that. You always want to add those milestones to your memories as a cricketer. I'm glad I finally got to tick that off my list. It's still a bit of a blur, to be honest. I think the team carried me throughout that day. I was a little bit sick, so that didn't really help much. 'But everything came together, and I'm just really happy that I could perform and help the team win.' Both players were crowned following a vote conducted among global fans registered at and a specialist panel comprising former international players and media representatives. Harmanpreet Kaur hails Indian team after winning Tri-series final against Sri Lanka

New Delhi [India] May 11 (ANI): Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her gratitude for the team's performance, especially the batting against Sri Lanka in the Tri-series Final on Sunday. Team India delivered a commanding performance to seal the Women's ODI Tri-Series title, posting a daunting 342/7 before bundling out Sri Lanka Women for 245 in the final, as per ESPNCricinfo. 'Proud of the entire team, they really played good cricket. Really happy with the way we batted today. The improvement never stops, though, such as areas like fielding, bowling and building good partnerships. Our medium pacers keep getting injured, so we need to work on that. The team is working on that,' Harmanpreet Kaur said in the post-match presentation. Kaur acknowledged areas for improvement, such as fielding and addressing injuries among medium pacers, and highlighted positive performances from other batters and Sneh Rana. 'But we're going to try and keep playing good cricket. But the way the other batters apart from Smriti and me, the way they batted was a big positive. The way Sneh Rana bowled was also a big positive. There are a lot of positives to talk about, but just want the enjoy the moment right now,' Kaur added. India's top order flourished with Mandhana leading the charge, while the middle order ensured the momentum never dipped. On the other hand, the Sri Lankan bowlers failed to stem the run flow, especially during the crucial middle overs. Mandhana made a brilliant 116 off 101 deliveries, and captain Kaur made a quick 41 runs in 30 balls. Mandhana was awarded player of the match for her century, and Sneh Rana was named Player of the series, as she grabbed 15 wickets in the Tri-series. Brief score: India Women 342/7 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 116, Harleen Deol 47; Sugandika Kumari 2/59) vs. Sri Lanka Women 245 in 48.2 overs (Chamari Athapaththu 51, Nilakshika Silva 48; Sneh Rana 4/38). 'Batting-friendly wickets, tough for bowlers': Mandhana after match-winning ton in Tri-Series Final

Colombo [Sri Lanka], May 11 (ANI): Smriti Mandhana rose to the occasion, scoring a sublime 116 off 101 balls to help India Women clinch the Women's ODI Tri-Series title with a commanding 97-run win over Sri Lanka in the final held in Colombo on Sunday. Batting first, India posted an imposing 342/7, with Mandhana anchoring the innings with characteristic poise and fluency. Her century set the tone for a dominant performance, as the Indian batters capitalised on favourable batting conditions to pile on the runs. 'Mostly we plan our innings to first assess the conditions. Initially they held their lines, but later on we found ways to score. All the wickets have been really good batting wickets. Not that great to bowl, but our bowlers did well regardless,' Mandhana said after being named 'Player of the Match', as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. In reply, Sri Lanka never quite found the rhythm needed to challenge India's total. Despite some brief partnerships, they were eventually bowled out for 245, as the Indian bowling unit, led by their spinners and disciplined pace attack, kept chipping away with wickets. Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu acknowledged India's superior performance and pointed to her team's missed chances in the field as a key factor in the result. 'First of all, congratulations to India, they played really well today. 300 plus is not easy to chase, we fought hard, but we dropped some catches, and missed some runouts as well. Even our bowling unit struggled in the middle overs, but Smriti (Mandhana) batted really well,' Athapaththu said after the game. She also admitted that fielding has been a concern throughout the tournament. 'We have to improve our fielding, we dropped catches and missed runout chances throughout the tournament. SLC is trying to get new fielding coaches as well, so we need to work on it,' she said. With the World Cup on the horizon, the Sri Lankan skipper emphasised the need to strengthen both their fielding and batting departments. 'We also need to improve our batting, we need some power-hitters, but work needs to be done before the World Cup,' she added. Brief score: India Women 342/7 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 116, Harleen Deol 47; Sugandika Kumari 2/59) vs. Sri Lanka Women 245 in 48.2 overs (Chamari Athapaththu 51, Nilakshika Silva 48; Sneh Rana 4/38). "Very pleased to have contributed": Sneh Rana after being named 'Player of the Series' in Sri Lanka

Colombo [Sri Lanka], May 11 (ANI): Sneh Rana reached a high point on Sunday as she was named 'Player of the Series' in the Women's ODI Tri-Series, following India's emphatic 97-run win over Sri Lanka in the final in Colombo. The seasoned all-rounder was at the heart of India's bowling success throughout the tournament, finishing with 15 wickets in just five matches. Her performances included a stunning five-wicket haul (5/43) against South Africa and a decisive 4/38 in the final that derailed Sri Lanka's chase of a daunting 343-run target. 'I am very pleased to have contributed,' Rana said after the match, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. 'After coming after so many months, I worked very hard, so I'm very grateful. The plan was simple - just stick to pace-off deliveries and yorkers. Worked with the bowling coach a lot, and it worked out,' she added. India had earlier posted 342/7, led by Smriti Mandhana's superb 116. While the batting laid the foundation, it was Rana's disciplined bowling that ensured Sri Lanka never got into the contest. Looking ahead to the World Cup, Rana expressed confidence in her team's form and unity. '(World Cup) Very confident, especially in my team, who worked so hard and played brilliantly,' she added. Brief score: India Women 342/7 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 116, Harleen Deol 47; Sugandika Kumari 2/59) vs. Sri Lanka Women 245 in 48.2 overs (Chamari Athapaththu 51, Nilakshika Silva 48; Sneh Rana 4/38).
