Ontario couple vows to play Lotto 6/49 for a year — then wins $2.5M jackpot
Blaine and Evelyne started a one-year lottery plan and hit the jackpot halfway through Last fall, Blaine Parrington and Evelyne Rainville made a simple pact: they'd play Lotto 6/49 every Wednesday for one year and see what happened. Six months in, the Sturgeon Falls, Ont., couple found themselves $2.5 million richer. The couple's $3 Lotto 6/49 ticket matched the winning numbers in the April 2, 2025 Classic Draw. Their ticket was one of two that split the $5 million jackpot. While the retirees have been casual lottery players for nearly 15 years, dabbling in both jackpot and Instant games, this was their first major win. 'I scanned our Lotto 6/49 ticket on the store's ticket checker and saw the 'Big Winner' message. When I asked the store clerk to validate our ticket, the lottery terminal froze. An OLG representative called and confirmed we'd won $2.5 million,' said Parrington. 'I was amazed and shocked. It was a feeling that can't be explained into words.' With happy tears in his eyes, he rushed home to share the life-changing news with his loved ones. 'I was astonished,' Rainville said, recalling the moment she found out they were now millionaires. 'That afternoon, we had family over and told them about our winning ticket. Everyone was very happy for us, including our son, whom we video chatted with and sent a picture of the validation slip. It was a surreal and exceptionally overwhelming moment.' Parrington also shared the exciting news with his daughter, whose reaction was one he won't forget. 'I reached out to my daughter, but she was busy and had to call me back,' said Parrington. 'After seeing the text message I'd sent her, she returned my call. When I answered, she was singing the Barenaked Ladies song, 'If I Had $1,000,000.' It was such a wholesome moment.' The funny response was a reminder of how surreal this win felt for Parrington and Rainville — and how much joy it brought their entire family. With the prize now in hand, the couple is looking forward to a more relaxed and fulfilling chapter of life. 'I enjoy fishing, so I'm looking to buy a new boat,' said Parringon. 'I'd like to upgrade my car, and we'd love to plan a trip within Canada to see the Rocky Mountains,' added Rainville. 'We'll also share this prize with our children and grandchildren, complete some renovations, and make some investments for our future.' The duo's winning numbers were 18, 26, 35, 40, 43, 47, and the ticket was purchased at RX Drug Mart on King Street in Sturgeon Falls, Ont. Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million. From a playful weekly tradition to a multi-million dollar win, Parrington and Rainville are proof that sometimes all it takes is one good idea and a little bit of luck. Nasrallah: Luck of the draw — Why I love buying lottery tickets
I started this adventure the first week I arrived in Ottawa in 1980. Article content While visiting a convenience store in my neighbourhood in the middle of Ottawa's harsh winter, I decided to purchase a 'Wintario' lottery ticket — which looked mysterious, odd and interesting. I still remember the numbers: 898990. Article content Article content Watching the draw for the first time on TV that night was an exercise in exhilaration, anticipation and surprise. The numbers on the screen rolled as follows: 998990. By catching the last five numbers, I won $5,000 — for an investment of $1. That got me through two years of university and managed to make my life a little easier in a new country. Article content Article content So I love lotteries. I love to take a chance. Oh, stop — take a deep breath. Do not rush to judgment. I am not talking about a Las Vegas-type of high-life gambling, or a casino-like obsession, or a thousand-dollars-a-day lottery habit. Article content I know well the sad stories of people working all day, then heading straight to the casino, or who go gambling or buy lotteries by spending unreasonable amounts. Or the stories of trips that are arranged by casino owners to attract the gullible and make them spend their dollars while treating them with flair, entertainment and phoney hospitality. Usually, the rewards are minimum or non-existent. Article content Moreover, the consequences of these deadly habits can be catastrophic to many lives, marriages and the financial well-being of families. Article content But I am talking about a different level, smaller scale. Article content Overall, the lottery business has benefited both the lucky minority of winners and the overall population in Ontario and Ottawa. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) supports a variety of community projects in Ottawa. Article content Article content The city, for instance, says it receives funding annually from OLG, generated from the Rideau Carleton Casino, Future Hard Rock. It is 'placed in (the) City's general revenue account and reinvested in services and initiatives to benefit residents. This year (2024), the City received more than $6 million in support,' the city website says. Article content The city goes on to cite examples: 'The Walter Baker Sports Centre had the filtration system for its main, diving and training pools completely overhauled after it reached the end of its lifecycle … To date, Ottawa has received over $106 million in non-tax gaming revenue from OLG since slots gaming has been hosted at the Rideau Carleton Casino, Future Hard Rock.' Article content The city has also seen OLG grants in many other recreation infrastructure projects, to name a few:

‘Serial pest' suspended from council. Again.
Andrew Thaler, the infamous 'serial pest' of Cooma, is just a few more nasty social media posts away from being booted off Snowy Monaro Regional Council for the next five years, after receiving a second three-month suspension. Thaler, a bloke in desperate need of a hobby, has a history of relentless harassment of (mostly female) elected officials and local businesses, often targeted in crude, rambling Facebook posts and YouTube livestreams. Despite being banned from the council chambers after a series of abusive tirades against officials, Thaler, a serial political candidate, scraped in at last year's local government elections. He was subsequently suspended from the council by the Office of Local Government (OLG) over abusive social media posts, including one calling a fellow councillor a 'fat dumb blonde' and a 'nasty liar'. Thaler appealed that decision to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, where he was represented by former Labor MP Adam Searle, who's seemingly become the Saul Goodman of bizarre local government snafus, last seen by CBD representing former Liberal MP John Ajaka at an inquiry into Liverpool council. Loading When that suspension was upheld this month, Thaler launched into yet another social media tirade, declaring that 'my crime is being a man' and accusing the council of being 'broken' and 'run by liars'. This week, he was suspended again for misconduct by the OLG over a series of Facebook posts and videos made back in March, including one which referred to a fellow councillor as a 'mad honking goose'. It's strike two for Thaler, who will be barred from serving in local government for five years if suspended for a third time.
