DMK tweaks campaign after high court injunction on OTP
Chennai: A day after Madras high court issued an interim injunction restraining DMK from sending one time password (OTP) verification messages during its 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign, the party made a change in its enrolment procedure eliminating the usage of OTP for verification. DMK organisational secretary R S Bharathi issued a statement on Tuesday asking DMK cadres to use the updated 'Makkaludan Stalin' mobile app for the membership drive, as the changes have been incorporated in the app. According to the changes, while an OTP will not be requested, the mobile number of a person is mandatory for enrolment. Also, one mobile number is enough for a family even if multiple members from the household get enrolled. If the family members agree, all their mobile numbers can be obtained, Bharathi said. "False, Misleading": DMK Denies Collecting Aadhaar For Membership Drive
Chennai: A day after the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court restrained the ruling DMK from collecting Aadhaar details and OTPs from the public during its membership drive, the party has strongly denied the allegations in court, calling them "false and misleading." Appearing before the bench on Tuesday, the DMK submitted that it does not collect Aadhaar numbers or any other personal documents for its membership campaign. The party clarified that the OTP system is used solely to record voluntary consent from individuals seeking to enrol, and not for any Aadhaar-based authentication. The submission comes in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an AIADMK advocate, who alleged that the DMK's ambitious membership drive - aimed at enrolling at least 30% of the state's voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections - was in violation of the Aadhaar Act and individual privacy rights. The petitioner had accused the DMK of coercing citizens, especially women, into sharing Aadhaar numbers, ration cards, voter IDs, and bank passbook details. It was also claimed that mobile numbers were being collected, followed by an OTP-based verification allegedly linked to Aadhaar, creating a politically motivated voter database. However, the DMK, in its counter, told the court, "No Aadhaar-based OTPs are being sought." "Members are being enrolled purely on the basis of the Electoral Roll released by the Election Commission. No documents like Aadhaar, ration card, or passbook are being collected. The PIL is based on misinformation spread by AIADMK," it said. Though the court did not stop the party's enrolment drive, DMK's counsel informed that the enrolment drive has been paused in light of the court's interim order and urged the bench to treat the case as an urgent matter, allowing the party to clarify its position in fairness. The court has now directed the DMK to file a formal impleading petition, giving it an opportunity to be heard officially in the matter. Yesterday, one of the judges also noted that during Tuesday's proceedings, natural justice required the respondents (including DMK) to be given a chance to respond before any adverse findings are recorded. The high court had on Monday restrained the DMK from collecting Aadhaar and OTP details based on the PIL's claims. The order had also tagged the Election Commission and UIDAI for their response, given the implications for voter data protection and political data usage. The case is expected to be taken up later this week, with the court likely to hear detailed arguments from all sides. The outcome could set a precedent on the boundaries of political data collection and the use of digital verification in party enrolment campaigns.

TGCSB issues advisory over malicious APK files disguised as RTO traffic challan alerts
Hyderabad: TheTelangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a stern warning to citizens about a new wave of cyber fraud involving malicious APK files disguised as RTO traffic challan alerts. According to the TGCSB, Cyber Security discovered that cybercriminals are actively targeting WhatsApp users. In its advisory TGCSB stated, Fraudsters are sending deceptive messages through groups with official-sounding names like 'TS Traffic Police Updates' or 'RTO Alerts Hyderabad', primarily during evening hours. These messages contain a link to download a file named 'RTO Traffic which unsuspecting victims are tricked into installing. As per the TGCSB after installation, the malicious APK file gives fraudsters full access to the victim's device. This includes sensitive banking info, credit card details, and SMS messages with important One Time Password (OTPs). The TGCSB added that victims often find unauthorized transactions on their accounts. These usually happen with online shopping platforms. The malware lets attackers control the infected device remotely. The TGCSB stressed that these attacks are very dangerous. They take advantage of the public's trust in what looks like official communication. Telangana Cyber Security Bureau advises citizens never click on links or download APKs from unknown or unofficial sources. Do not trust WhatsApp group names, attackers often name them to appear official. Install apps only from Google play store or Apple app store. Madras High Court Stays Collection Of Aadhaar Data During DMK's Membership Drive
Chennai: In a significant interim order, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday restrained the ruling party DMK from collecting Aadhaar numbers and OTPs from the public as a part of its ongoing membership drive. However, the court allowed the party to continue with the drive itself, pending further hearings. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) represented by an AIADMK advocate, who alleged that the DMK's act ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections violates privacy laws and the Aadhaar Act. The petitioner argued that the DMK was collecting Aadhaar numbers, ration card details, voter IDs, bank passbooks and mobile numbers, and using the OTP verification process to build a database for political propaganda. He claimed that women in particular were being misled or coerced with threats that failure to share these documents could affect their eligibility for government schemes, including the state's monthly stipend for women. The plea alleged that such collection of personal information, especially Aadhaar details, for non-statutory purposes was unlawful as per the Aadhaar Act, which permits use of Aadhaar only for authorised government-related services and benefits. The DMK, the petitioner noted, is not a recognised entity authorised to seek Aadhaar authentication. Seeking to declare the DMK's data collection unconstitutional and a violation of the fundamental right to privacy, the petitioner also urged the court to: Order the destruction of any Aadhaar-linked data already collected and Direct the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to launch an investigation DMK spokesperson, Dr Syed Hafeezullah denied the charges, saying, "Membership is entirely voluntary. We do not collect Aadhaar data. The OTP system is a simple tool to verify mobile numbers, and there is no privacy violation involved." The DMK's legal team is expected to formally respond to the court's interim order this evening. Meanwhile, the Madurai Bench has also tagged the Election Commission and UIDAI in the case and will continue hearing the matter. The ruling DMK campaign aims to enrol at least 30% of Tamil Nadu's voters as members as it gears up for the 2026 assembly elections. With AIADMK and BJP reviving ties and actor Vijay's TVK making its electoral debut, the election is likely to be a four cornered contest with Vijay's star power.
