Michigan man drives to police station, ends up with OWI arrest

A Michigan man found out that driving to a police department while intoxicated might result in unintended consequences. The Troy Police Department in Oakland County, Michigan, reported that such a scenario happened shortly after 6 p.m. on July 23 at their police station on West Big Beaver Road. That's when a 43-year-old Troy resident stopped by the lobby to explain that he was there to drop off medication for his wife, who was in custody in the police department's short-term lock-up facility. But while speaking with the man, police noted "he was unsteady on his feet and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person." As a result of his appearance and upon learning he had driven to the station, police asked the man to perform several sobriety evaluations. "Officers noted he performed poorly," police said. He then agreed to take a preliminary breath test, which came back with a result of .162%. The legal blood alcohol limit for Michigan adults who are driving is 0.08%. The man was then arrested and taken to the Troy Police lock-up facility, where follow-up chemical breath tests were given and came back with results of .175% and .177%. Police issued him a citation for operating while intoxicated.

Detroit man sentenced in connection with Oakland County Deputy Bradley Reckling murder case

One of three men charged in connection with the murder of Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Reckling was sentenced Wednesday. Marquis Lamar Goins, of Detroit, pleaded guilty early this month to conducting a criminal enterprise, carjacking, receiving and concealing stolen property (motor vehicle) and felony firearm. Judge Charise Anderson sentenced Goins to 8 to 30 years in prison for carjacking, consecutive two years on felony firearms charges, 5 to 20 years for conducting a criminal enterprise, and 1 to 5 years for receiving and concealing a motor vehicle, which will be served concurrently with the felony firearm and carjacking sentences. Goins, along with Raymone Raylee Debose, of Clinton Township, and Karim Blake Moore, also of Clinton Township, was charged in connection with Reckling's murder. Reckling was shot and killed on June 22, 2024, while investigating a vehicle stolen from the Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights. Authorities say Reckling found the stolen vehicle in Detroit and was behind it when the driver suddenly stopped, and individuals exited the car and opened fire. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard called the shooting an "ambush" and said Reckling was driving an unmarked vehicle that did not have a dashcam. The deputy began investigating an auto theft ring in November 2023, which Wayne County prosecutors say Goins, Debose and Moore were associated with. On Tuesday, Debose pleaded guilty to first-degree murder of a police officer and felony firearm, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. As part of his guilty plea, Debose will be sentenced Debose will be sentenced on Aug. 22. Moore pleaded guilty on March 17 to conducting a criminal enterprise, receiving and concealing stolen property (motor vehicle) and felony firearm. In May, Moore was sentenced to 3 to 20 years in prison for conducting a criminal enterprise, 2 years for the felony firearms charge, and 1 to 5 years for receiving and concealing a motor vehicle. Moore will serve all sentences consecutively.

50 years after Jimmy Hoffa was last seen, his disappearance remains a mystery

Wednesday marks 50 years since the former labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa was last seen alive in Metro Detroit, and his whereabouts have yet to be resolved. James Riddle "Jimmy" Hoffa was president of the powerful International Brotherhood of Teamsters union from 1957 to 1971. He was widely known to have been involved with organized crime, as CBS News reported. He served federal prison time after a 1964 conviction of jury tampering and subsequent convictions of fraud and conspiracy. President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence, and Hoffa was released from prison. The early prison release was on the stipulation that he stay out of union politics until 1980. Hoffa was last seen on July 30, 1975, in Oakland County. That's also the date that the last known photo of him was taken in a parking lot of the old Machus Red Fox Restaurant in Bloomfield Township. He was scheduled to meet that day with reputed Detroit mob enforcer Anthony "Tony Jack" Giacalone and alleged New Jersey mob figure Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano at the Macchus Red Fox. No one has seen Hoffa since. Many believe he was murdered after going to the restaurant, including author Scott Burnstein, who has been giving lectures and interviews in Southeast Michigan this summer about the crime mystery. While there is a long list of theories and speculations for his final resting spot, some locations have been considered seriously enough at times for organized digs. One of those searches included an Oakland Township field where the FBI led a dig in 2013. Another search took place in 2021 at a former New Jersey landfill site. Despite his body never being found, Hoffa was declared legally dead in 1982. There have been no arrests in connection with his death. Hoffa's disappearance remains one of Michigan's biggest mysteries.

Warren mother killed, her toddler injured, when pickup runs over both of them in parking lot, police say

A Warren woman was killed, and her 1-year-old daughter injured, after both were run over by a pickup in a parking lot in Oakland County, Michigan. The collision happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Alex's Market and Grill in Holly Township, according to Michigan State Police. At the time they were struck, the woman was holding the toddler and reaching toward another child in a parked Ford Explorer. Officers were not certain if she was placing the other child inside at the time or taking the other child out of a seat. The emergency call to Detroit Regional Communications Center reported a pedestrian struck, and when state police arrived, they found the woman on the ground, unresponsive. Troopers provided CPR to the 29-year-old woman until an EMS crew arrived. The woman was later pronounced dead at the scene. In the meantime, troopers found her 1-year-old girl, who was also struck by the Ford pickup truck. The toddler's injuries were not life-threatening. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The vehicle that struck the two, a commercial-grade Ford pickup, was pulling out of the parking lot next to the Explorer when that driver struck and ran over them, troopers said. The 72-year-old driver, a man who lives in Carleton, was arrested, police said. An investigation is underway as to the circumstances. "It does appear at this time that impaired driving is the cause of this crash. While many drivers are aware of the impacts of alcohol while driving, we continue to remind drivers the same is true for drug impairment," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said.
