Samsung wrapped up a strong showing at the second Morocco Gaming Expo, held from July 2 to 6 at Rabat's Palais des Sports. The event, organized by the Ministry of Youth, brought together industry players and gamers from across the region. Samsung's booth drew attention with some of its most advanced products. The Odyssey OLED G9, with its ultra-wide curved screen, delivered sharp detail, a 240Hz refresh rate, and near-instant response time. Visitors could also explore the Odyssey 3D, a monitor that displays 3D visuals without glasses, thanks to eye-tracking and custom lens technology. The company also featured its latest OLED TVs, designed to enhance gaming with high refresh rates, self-emissive pixels, and support for G-SYNC and FreeSync. The Galaxy S25 stood out as a mobile gaming hub, offering smooth performance and easy control over connected Samsung devices. The booth also offered challenges and demos that invited visitors to test out the features and learn how each device pushes the limits of gameplay. Samsung unveils Odyssey 3D gaming monitor with glasses-free 3D experience
Samsung has announced its new gaming monitor, the Samsung Odyssey 3D, on Friday, June 27. The monitor is set to revolutionise 3D gaming by eliminating the need to use glasses. This is a move that Samsung believes will remove any discomfort commonly associated with 3D content. 'The Odyssey 3D represents Samsung's commitment to pushing the boundaries of display innovation, offering gamers a smarter, sharper, and crosstalk-free 3D experience while maintaining top-tier performance for 2D content. This groundbreaking monitor not only redefines immersive gaming but also solidifies Samsung's leadership in the gaming monitor market,' the company said in its official release. For the monitor's 3D content, Samsung is making use of three core technologies: eye-tracking, view mapping, and a lenticular lens. But how does it work? Firstly, the eye-tracking technology uses two stereo cameras at the top of the monitor to detect and track the user's real-time eye movement. These cameras then capture images in real time to gauge the distance between the user's eyes and the monitor. This technology is able to capture the user's eyes even if they are wearing glasses. Based on these images, the monitor calculates an accurate pixel positioning and delivers a 3D image using view mapping. Then, the final images are separately delivered to each eye through the Odyssey 3D's lenticular lens, using light refraction. This feature is functional even in case of user movement, as the monitor readjusts itself. The lenticular lens activates only when the user enables 3D mode from the Odyssey 3D Hub. Odyssey 3D is not just about its 3D feature, it also comes with some performance enhancements. It comes with a 165 Hz refresh rate, alongside a 1 ms response time. The monitor is also NVIDIA G-Sync compatible, providing the user a faster, smoother gaming experience. In order to prevent 'crosstalk', or misaligned images causing visual discomfort, Samsung has used post-assembly calibration, hardware-specific data storage, and a deep learning-based eye-tracking algorithm. The monitor also has a specially engineered display cell coating, which reduces light distortion and glare to further enhance image clarity. Samsung's Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor Is a Promising Glimpse Into the Return of 3D
The setup is fairly simple, though it requires a few things to get started. First off, you need the Reality Hub app launcher to actually play games in 3D. It's too bad it requires a separate app, but the software at least will scan your game libraries and display any supported games. Beyond that, you'll need to plug in the attached USB-A cable, along with whatever you're using for the display itself. I hooked it up to a gaming laptop, and it worked fine. Photograph: Luke Larsen You'll find the ports on the monitor around the back, which offer the bare minimum, including two HDMI ports, DisplayPort, and two USB-A downstream ports. No headphone jack and no USB-C. On the right of the port array, you'll find the power button, which also serves as the controls for the OSD (on-screen display). The menu is fine, though I was annoyed by how many clicks it took to get to brightness or volume controls. It comes with a pair of 5-watt speakers, which are decent but not anything special. They have 'directional sound,' giving sound effects some added immersion. However, in my test period, the audio was clearer and fuller with the 3D spatial speakers of the Acer monitor. Quality Where It Counts You'll buy this monitor for its 3D capabilities, but in reality, you'll use it in standard 2D far more often. That's why Samsung was smart to ensure it didn't compromise on the quality of the display. While I do hope an OLED is introduced in the future, the Odyssey 3D uses a high-quality 4K IPS panel with a 165-Hz refresh rate to make sure that gaming in 2D is still an enjoyable experience. Color coverage is solid (100 percent sRGB, 83 percent AdobeRGB), and color accuracy is excellent. I measured it at 0.83 with my colorimeter, comparable to OLED panels. In SDR, this is also a brighter panel than most OLEDs, reaching 487 nits of max brightness. It won't be nearly as impressive in HDR, but as it turns out, 3D games aren't supported in HDR anyway. Suffice to say, it's a solid 4K gaming monitor on its own—if only it weren't for the exorbitant price.
