Festival at historic Powys building praised as 'fantastic'
A summer festival hosted at a historic Powys building was described as a 'fantastic event' by its organisers and attendees, with more events planned this summer. As Llanfyllin's Workhouse Party returned for another year over the summer solstice weekend, organisers have since thanked everyone who helped plan the event as well as its supporters. The event saw the Grade II listed building hosting an array of musical performers, workshops and activities, as the event returned for the second year in a row after it made a successful comeback in 2024 following a lengthy hiatus. Campers flocked to the workhouse for three days of live music, DJs, creativity and connection at the venue, in what organisers called a 'fantastic showcase' and 'phenomenal mix of local talent and visiting artists'. The main Courtyard Stage hosted a range of bands and showcased all genres, while the Garden and Regenerate stages played host to several DJ's. Creative Stuff Newtown turned the Gallery into a warm and intimate sitting room space and open play workshops were provided by Arts Connection – Cyswllt Celf, while local food was provided by Meadows Café and The Curry Stall. Praising those involved, a spokesperson for the organisers said: 'We had a lot of people come and help us out over the weekend to help build the party, whether they were helping park cars or helping to keep the site tidy. 'We just want to say a big thank you to them and the main crew for programming such a great line up. 'We're really looking forward to reflecting on this year and coming back next year with another fantastic event.' Despite already hosting one musical event this summer, the Workhouse is not slowing down, as North Wales Opera Company are set to host concert at Llanfyllin's Workhouse on Saturday, July 19, as their A Night at the Opera event returns to the historic building. Alongside operatic favourites from Tosca, La Boheme, and La Traviata the company will perform pieces by Gluck, Offenbach, Dvorak and Parisotti as well as numbers from The Sound of Music, The Mikado and Porgy and Bess.

Chinese national accused of drugging and raping multiple women in Germany
German prosecutors have charged a 43-year-old Chinese national with 22 offences, including attempted murder and aggravated rape after drugging victims, in some cases involving women he knew, prosecutors said on Tuesday. The accused, who was not identified, is suspected of sedating women with sleeping pills and raping them in eight cases. Some victims knew the defendant and were unaware of what was happening, prosecutors in Frankfurt said. In four cases, the man is suspected of overpowering, anaesthetising and raping the victims during property viewings and of videoing or photographing the acts. In seven cases, the drug dose was so high it may have endangered victims' lives, prosecutors said in a statement. The accused is alleged to have been a member of the Telegram online platform for several years, where he exchanged information about how to sexually assault unconscious women. He is also believed to have illegally sold sedatives to other chat participants, prosecutors said. The man from Offenbach, near Frankfurt, is believed to have committed the offences between January 2020 and November 2024, and has been in custody since November, prosecutors said. The charges follow the high-profile case of Dominique Pelicot in France, convicted in December of repeatedly drugging and raping his wife for almost a decade and inviting dozens of strangers to rape her unconscious body.

Well-paced, exciting final drew large audience
DSO and DYO Concerto Competition Rising Stars Finalists Dunedin Town Hall Friday May 16 The 2025 Dunedin Concerto Competition final, in which three young musicians performed with a full orchestra, attracted a large audience to the Dunedin Town Hall on Friday night. The first half of the programme featured the Dunedin Youth Orchestra, a strong 60-member orchestra with big sound and enthusiasm. DYO (conductor David Burchell) began with Offenbach's overture La Belle Helene, featuring contrasting flowing waltz passages and robust sections. They continued with varied movements from three substantial suites — L'arlesienne Suite No.2 by Bizet, Little Suite No.2 by Malcolm Arnold and Montagues and Capulets from Romeo and Juliet Suite No.2 by Prokofiev. The well-known Eric Coates' Knightsbridge March completed their contribution. All were well-paced and exciting and the conductor for the second half, James Judd, commented he was "knocked out by the quality of the first half". He conducted the DSO which included a number of DYO instrumentalists gaining experience with a professional orchestra. The Concerto Competition attracted 25 applicants, three aged under 14. I attended preliminary performances and can vouch for the high standard of performance and the difficulty the judges (Monique Lapins, Jian Liu and Samuel Jacobs) faced in naming just three for the final. First place ($7000) went to pianist Ozan Biner-McGrath (year 12 Logan Park High School), who chose the allegro movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor for a strong, confident, stylistic delivery with impressive scalic cadenza. Second place ($5000) went to first-year University of Otago student Portia Bell (cello) for the allegro movement of Dvorak's Cello Concerto Op. 104. Taking third place ($3000) was Otago University first-year student Roy Zhang (piano), who played with two movements of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major. A rather "showy" allegramente displayed the movement's jazz elements, followed by adagio, which developed stunningly with woodwind lyricism and obligato. Review by Elizabeth Bouman
