International drug syndicate busted in UT, 3 foreign nationals held

Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough, the UT police crime branch has dismantled an international drug syndicate operating in the Tricity, arresting three foreign nationals in a high-stakes operation. The accused were caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle narcotics into the city. The arrested individuals have been identified as Imoru Damian (31) and Okoye Nnamdi (31), both Nigerian nationals, and Toufe Yousouf (30) from Cape Town, South Africa. Police recovered significant quantities of cocaine and amphetamine, along with a Honda City car used in the operation. The trio was produced in a local court and remanded to police custody for further interrogation. According to SP Jasbir Singh, crime branch, Damian and Yousouf were residing in a rented flat in Kharar, Mohali, while Okoye was based in Delhi. The crackdown began on July 22, when Damian was apprehended with 62.6g of amphetamine. He had entered India on a medical visa in 2021 and had overstayed illegally. Damian's interrogation led to the arrest of his two accomplices. Okoye was found with 35.8g of cocaine and 5.73g of amphetamine, while Toufe, who arrived in India on a business visa in 2023, was caught with 34.85g of cocaine. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your donations can help this little boy see again clearly Donate For Health Donate Now Undo What's more alarming is the revelation that the trio operated in isolation, with handlers based abroad coordinating the network. The syndicate sourced drugs from Delhi and targeted youth in the Tricity. Investigators also uncovered a disturbing link to a network of Nigerian students in Kharar, allegedly exploited for drug distribution.

Udinese keeper Okoye banned for two months after match-fixing probe - Egyptian Football

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who had been accused of match-fixing, has been cleared of all charges but given a two-month ban by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the Serie A club said. The FIGC National Federal Court, which met on Tuesday to discuss the charge against Nigerian Okoye, "has excluded any involvement of the player in sports offences, after accepting the arguments of his lawyers", Udinese said in a statement. "During the trial, all charges of alleged sporting misconduct were dropped, and the decision to impose a two-month ban was based solely on a violation of the general principle of fairness (Article 4 of the Federal Sports Justice Code). "The club has stated that it is satisfied with the court's conclusion that the player was not involved in the infamous match-fixing theory. The club wishes to reiterate its full support for Okoye, who is awaiting the reasons for the decision. Udinese Calcio reasserts that it is firmly convinced of Maduka's proper conduct." The 25-year-old Nigerian international was alleged to have deliberately collected a booking during his team's Italian league match against Lazio in March 2024. The German-born goalkeeper received a yellow card for time-wasting, after an alleged deal reached with a friend who won 120,000 euros ($140,000) as a result of a bet. The FIGC investigation established that there was no intention to fix the match, which would have been punishable by a four-year fine. However Okoye, who has been with Udinese since 2023, will be suspended from August 18 to October 19. He will therefore miss seven of his team's matches -- six in the league and one in the Coppa Italia. Gunmen kill 30 travellers in Nigeria's unstable southeast, says Amnesty

Gunmen shot dead at least 30 travellers in an attack in Nigeria's southeastern Imo state, Amnesty International said on Friday, raising fresh concerns about violence in a region rife with insecurity. More than 20 vehicles and trucks were set ablaze by the attackers, who were suspected to be members of the banned separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Amnesty said in a post on X. Imo police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the attack occurred in Thursday's early hours, but declined comment on the number of fatalities. One of the assailants was killed by the police, Okoye told Reuters on Friday. A police statement said the gunmen, operating in three groups, barricaded the highway at about 4am GMT and shot sporadically before setting vehicles ablaze. "A full-scale search and cordon operation is currently under way, with security operatives combing nearby forests and surrounding areas where the suspects are believed to be hiding," the police said in the statement.

Gunmen kill three in Nigeria's southeast: Police

Representative Image (AI-generated) Gunmen blocked a highway in Nigeria's southeastern Imo state this week, killing at least three people and injuring several, police said on Saturday. Imo state police spokesman Henry Okoye told AFP that around 5:00 am (0400 GMT) on Thursday "criminal elements suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB... came out in their numbers. .. and blocked the Owerri-Okigwe highway and began to fire sporadically". He said the gunmen fired on "commuters on the road and they were able to set some vehicles ablaze and killed some innocent individuals". "For now three persons have been confirmed dead," he said. Amnesty International reported in a post on X a toll of 30. Police called that "sensationalising". Okoye said the gunmen engaged in a battle with police and one suspect was killed while another was arrested. They are just pure terrorists." The attack occurred on the same day President Bola Tinubu was visiting Imo's neighbouring Anambra state to launch infrastructural projects. Police blamed the attack on Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group that wants independence for the Igbo people in southeast Nigeria. Former London estate agent and founder of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu is on trial on terrorism charges in the capital Abuja.
