Majorca struggles as tourist hotspot amid warning of 'sad reality' for UK tourists

British tourists have been warned over the reality of life in the Balearic Islands UK tourists in Majorca have been warned about the "sad reality" behind their dream holidays, which are turning out to be disappointing. European Union holidaymakers are also being cautioned about what to really expect from the Balearic Islands. Taking to Instagram, social media star Olly Bowman warned people of overcrowding at the beaches along the Majorcan coastline. Speaking on a video, he laughed: "The reality of beaches in Mallorca," while panning the camera towards the sand. ‌ He continued: "There is zero space on the sand." Before he took to the water and explained: "All of majorca has these little alcoves of beaches, there's a tiny bit of sand and it's packed with people." ‌ Fans and followers of the vlogger were quick to rush to the comment section, giving their own experiences of over tourism and crowding in holiday hotspots like Majorca, Menorca, Gran Canaria, Ibiza and more, like Lanzarote and Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Birmingham Live reports. One Instagram follower wrote: "Guys I understand the mass turism situation in most of Spain but what do you expect turist to do? Of course they will visit to see the beach, him providing the beach name will do NOTHING. It's already well known." As a second, who lived in Mallorca voiced their opinion, stating: "Look, I like your content, but I lived in Mallorca for a few years. I left because of gentrification and mass tourism. These videos don't help at all. The people there can't sustain that, nor can nature." "I simply invite you to reflect on the impact we have on this world, because you really seem like a good guy," they pleaded. ‌ While a third said: "If it's so crowded why do you keep going and sharing posts about it. Imagine for the people living in Mallorca..," Another said: "Mallorca as always being extremely affected by mass tourism, this may be a beautiful beach but it has been ruined for the locals who can't even go down to swim there anymore." A fifth had said that Olly's video showed the "sad reality" of life and holidaying in the Balearics now. The Instagram video gained over 11,000 likes after Olly posted it. ‌ This comes after authorities in Spain's Balearic Islands announced they will stop using social media influencers to promote lesser-known destinations and hidden spots, stating that "selfie tourism" is taking a toll on the region's most popular areas. In an effort to ease the pressure caused by over tourism, officials had hoped that social media influencers - many with hundreds of thousands of followers - could help by encouraging tourists to explore quieter, less-visited areas. The idea was that by showcasing alternative locations, influencers might reduce the crowds at the islands' most popular and overcrowded spots.

Tourist visits Majorca's 'best beach' and is hit with sad reality

Majorca is known for having plenty of beaches, making it popular for sun-seekers and tourists. One influencer visited the "best beach in all of Majorca" and was faced with a problem Majorca, famed for its stunning beach resorts, sheltered coves, and crystal clear waters, is a top holiday destination. It's especially popular among Brits – and travel is super easy due to the short journey and affordable flights. However, increasing concerns over the effects of mass tourism are being voiced not only by local residents of Spain but now by tourists themselves. And when an influencer visited the 'best beach in Majorca' recently, this issue was clear. Olly Bowman expressed shock at the sheer number of people crowding a well-known idyllic spot on the Majorcan coastline. ‌ Olly took to Instagram to document his day out. In the short clip, it was clear the sands had become swamped. There was hardly any room to stretch out or stroll, as holidaymakers took up every patch of beach. ‌ In his eye-opening video, he remarked: "There is zero space on the sand." Venturing into the sea for a swim, the influencer initially celebrated the "perfect temperature" of the water but soon realised that it was, in truth, "a bit chillier" than he had anticipated. Olly revealed that to enjoy his time on the beach, he had to get creative. He managed to find a tiny spot for his belongings, but ended up having to sit with his legs propped up against a rock due it being "just so crowded". His Instagram video went viral – and many Majorca locals urged him to remove the beach's name from his post to avoid exacerbating the tourist overflow. One user remarked: "Beautiful! But if you name the beaches they will even be more crowded." ‌ Another said: "Mass tourism in Majorca is destroying fragile areas that should be protected. Please refrain from sharing the names of these beaches and help us preserve them as much as possible." The influencer considerately deleted the beach's name from his caption. He elaborated in the comments section: "Everyone requested I remove the name of the beach, very fair. "I do like to think of myself as someone who can show others cool spots to travel and visit but I see how in this circumstance it's more detrimental than good, so I agree, and have removed the name from the caption." Majorcans celebrated his response, expressing their gratitude, with one replying: "We appreciate it! I'm Mallorcan, enjoy our island!" Further viewers commented with expressions of "thank you", "thanks", and "gracias." The struggle with increased tourism and its impact on the island's beaches is a significant summer issue, as highlighted by another Instagram user who commented: "Thanks for showing reality."

A Good Night's Sleep: Do Sleep Aids Like Olly and Natrol Really Work?

In today's fast-paced world, sleep has become something of a luxury. Between the buzzing of smartphones, workplace stress, and irregular schedules, many people find themselves tossing and turning well past bedtime. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in three adults in the U.S. doesn't get enough sleep. This growing sleep crisis has fueled a booming market for over-the-counter sleep aids — with brands like Olly and Natrol at the forefront. But do these sleep aids actually work? And more importantly, are they safe for long-term use? Unlike prescription medications such as Ambien or Lunesta, over-the-counter sleep aids typically use natural ingredients — melatonin, L-theanine, valerian root, chamomile, and magnesium — to promote relaxation and help the body ease into a natural sleep cycle. Melatonin, the star ingredient in many of these products, is a hormone that your body naturally produces in response to darkness. It signals your brain that it's time to sleep. Supplements containing melatonin have become a go-to remedy for those struggling with jet lag, shift work, or mild insomnia. Two of the most widely recognized names in the natural sleep aid category are Olly and Natrol. While both offer melatonin-based products, they each bring a unique approach to the table. Olly is a wellness brand known for its colorful packaging, gummy vitamins, and emphasis on taste and ease of use. The Olly Sleep gummies are a best-seller and contain a blend of 3mg of melatonin, L-theanine (an amino acid that promotes calmness), and botanicals like chamomile, passionflower, and lemon balm. Pros: Great taste : Many users prefer gummies over pills, especially for children and adults who dislike swallowing capsules. : Many users prefer gummies over pills, especially for children and adults who dislike swallowing capsules. Non-habit forming : The combination of melatonin and calming botanicals supports relaxation without dependency. : The combination of melatonin and calming botanicals supports relaxation without dependency. Brand trust: Olly has carved out a niche among health-conscious millennials and Gen Z consumers who are drawn to its modern aesthetic. Cons: Added sugars : Like many gummies, Olly Sleep contains a small amount of sugar, which might not be ideal for those watching their intake. : Like many gummies, Olly Sleep contains a small amount of sugar, which might not be ideal for those watching their intake. Lower melatonin dose: For some individuals, 3mg may not be sufficient to promote sleep, though this can vary by person. Natrol is a longstanding player in the supplement industry, known for its more traditional approach. Natrol Melatonin comes in several dosages (1mg to 10mg) and formats, including tablets, fast-dissolve tabs, and time-release options. Pros: Customizable dosing : Users can choose a dosage that aligns with their sleep needs, from microdoses to stronger options. : Users can choose a dosage that aligns with their sleep needs, from microdoses to stronger options. Formulation variety : Time-release and fast-dissolve tablets give users more control over how quickly or gradually the melatonin is absorbed. : Time-release and fast-dissolve tablets give users more control over how quickly or gradually the melatonin is absorbed. No sugar: Most Natrol products are sugar-free, making them a better choice for people with dietary restrictions. Cons: Taste and format : Some users report that the taste of fast-dissolve tablets is unpleasant, and those who dislike pills may prefer gummies. : Some users report that the taste of fast-dissolve tablets is unpleasant, and those who dislike pills may prefer gummies. Limited additional ingredients: Unlike Olly, Natrol's basic melatonin products don't typically include botanicals or amino acids unless purchased in a specific blend. The short answer is: for many people, yes — but not for everyone. Melatonin has been extensively studied and shown to be effective in certain cases, especially in regulating circadian rhythms. People who work night shifts, have jet lag, or experience delayed sleep phase disorder often find melatonin supplements helpful. However, melatonin is not a sedative — it doesn't 'knock you out' the way a prescription sleeping pill might. Instead, it gently nudges your body in the direction of sleep. If stress, anxiety, or poor sleep hygiene are the root causes of your sleeplessness, you may benefit more from holistic lifestyle changes or addressing underlying issues. Both Olly and Natrol products are considered generally safe for short-term use, especially when used at low to moderate dosages (1mg to 5mg). However, melatonin supplements can cause side effects like: Grogginess the next morning Vivid dreams or nightmares Headaches or dizziness Gastrointestinal discomfort Experts caution against using melatonin every night for extended periods unless advised by a healthcare provider. It's also important to keep in mind that the FDA does not regulate supplements as strictly as medications, so quality and dosage can vary between brands. Sleep aids like Olly and Natrol offer a practical and accessible solution for occasional sleep difficulties. Their differing approaches — one focusing on enjoyable experience and botanical blends, the other on customizable science-backed doses — make them appealing to different types of consumers. However, they're not a cure-all. Improving your sleep hygiene — like avoiding screens before bed, limiting caffeine, and creating a calming bedtime routine — should always be the foundation of good sleep. Used wisely and occasionally, supplements can support your journey to better rest. But the ultimate goal should be a sleep routine that works with your body's natural rhythms, not against them. An insider said Olly is enjoying a "blossoming romance" with Anna, while snaps of the couple carving each other's names into stone feature on Olly's Instagram account. Here we take a look at other soap lotharios who fell for their co-stars - including a messy love triangle in the Dales and a Corrie legend who admits to an "uncontrollable" sex drive. Co-star fling while ex was pregnant In May 2022, we reported how EastEnders star Max Bowden, now 30, had grown close to his co-star Shona McGarty, now 33, after splitting from his pregnant lover, insurance exec Roisin Buckle, now 40. The actor, who played Ben Mitchell, assured his girlfriend he was not seeing anyone else when they separated. But Roisin claimed she found out Max was in a relationship with Shona just weeks after their split - and said he missed key scans and events, leaving her in tears. She gave birth to a baby boy in September 2022. Meanwhile Shona and Max - who went Instagram official days before Roisin's due date - broke up after six months of dating, but remained on good terms. Opening up about the split in June 2023, Shona told the Mirror: "We're actually better than ever. It's a friendship, we're such in a good place. "You take a risk, and you do something and it doesn't work out, but that's life, you've got to take that risk." Now Max - who was axed from EastEnders in December 2023 following a showdown with bosses over his party lifestyle - has gone public with his new girlfriend. The heartthrob dated Loose Women's Nadia Sawalha, 60, while she too was appearing on the soap as businesswoman Annie Palmer, with whom his character had a fling. Marc was once so popular he claimed he had to donate a sack of knickers sent to him by female viewers to Oxfam. But he later claimed he was axed from EastEnders over his real-life romance with Nadia because it was lessening his appeal for female fans. After he was given the boot, Marc said he fell into depression, his weight ballooned to over 17st and his drinking spiralled. He told the Mirror: "I've not kept in touch with the other Di Marco actors because our departure was so traumatic. When I first found myself out of the show I didn't realise at the time but I started eating all the wrong things and I was boozing far too much." Marc was back in the spotlight in 2007 when he appeared on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here - and controversially grew close to his campmate Cerys Matthews. He was in a relationship with his Footballer's Wives: Extra Time co-star Sarah Matravers at the time, and confessed to behaving like a "rat", having broken his girlfriend's heart. Marc said: "I just developed feelings for someone in there and I've got a Mrs at home, I'm a rat. I can't look for a scapegoat. The buck stops here." Marc and Cerys continued dating post-jungle, but called it quits a year later. In 1994 she married co-star Peter Amory, 60, who played her on-screen step-son Chris. But their 10-year marriage was derailed when he was accused of having an affair with Emmerdale co-star Samantha Giles, now 53, while Claire, now 63, was working on Bad Girls in London. While he and Samantha deny anything happening during the marriage, Claire was convinced it did. "I had a feeling that something was going on," she told the Mirror back in 2005. "I was working in London and we were spending less and less time together. I was travelling back to Yorkshire every weekend. "I remember Pete saying that I only came back to see my dogs and horses… and I thought: 'Well, yeah, and to catch you at it!'" Claire's suspicions were seemingly confirmed when Samantha's then-partner penned a letter claiming their spouses were indeed cheating. He cheated on his first wife Anna Cropper multiple times, something he has since expressed regret over. Speaking about his affairs - one of which was with fellow Weatherfield star Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner - he said: "There were plenty of girls around. "I didn't have any control over my own sex drive. I didn't have the strength to control it. Every morning I woke up regretting and hurting." He added that his fling with Pat was a "one-off" after she invited him round to her flat. "We had a few drinks, then one thing led to another," he said. When Anna discovered her husband's infidelity she divorced him in 1974. In an interview with Piers Morgan on his Life Stories show, Bill told how his sexual antics led fellow Coronation Street actors to nickname him "C**k Roache". Piers also pressed him on the number of women he'd slept with, asking if it was 1,000 - to which Bill replied: "Well, I'm not denying it." He went on to marry Sara Mottram in 1978, with whom he shares three children, but they divorced in 2009 - though Bill insisted he was always faithful to her. Bill then dated TV weather girl Emma Jesson, nearly 40 years his junior, until 2013. The actor is now celibate, and claimed: 'I don't need a sexual relationship anymore. Everything works, but I don't have that need for sex I used to have.' At the time, Danny was in a relationship with Hollyoaks actress Kirsty-Leigh Porter, 36, who found incriminating texts on his phone. It's said to have caused fireworks, with angry cast members splitting into two camps. The Sun reported: "The tension between them caused major problems on set, because Michael made it crystal clear he didn't want to be around Danny." Kirsty was said to be devastated at the betrayal after forgiving Danny's alleged infidelity with a prostitute when drunk. And Michael was believed to be furious with pal Danny for going behind his back, but he stayed with Isabel until they finally split in 2019. Danny is now happily married to childhood sweetheart Steph Jones, and the couple are expecting their third child. Toxic split 18 Tina and Ryan seemed to be one of the most stable soap couples Credit: ITV/REX/Shutterstock 18 Ryan shares two children with former TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh and one with Tina Credit: Instagram It's never wise to mix business and pleasure, but Tina O'Brien, 41, appears to have missed that memo. Aged 17, she dated Bruno Langley, 42, who played her on-screen boyfriend Todd Grimshaw, for a year. When their romance went south, five months later she moved on to Bruno's on-screen brother, Ryan Thomas, 41. Thankfully her ex gave them her blessing, and initially Tina and Ryan seemed to be one of the most stable soap couples - though Tina said their relationship was tempestuous at times due to her bad temper. The pair dated for six years and welcomed daughter Scarlett in 2008. But a month before Scarlett's first birthday, Ryan allegedly told Tina he didn't love her anymore, leaving her "devastated". Tina claimed: "He said I didn't do it for him any more. Those were his words. I was absolutely devastated. He said he didn't want the responsibility of a relationship with me." Both moved on, with Ryan happily engaged to former TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh, 33, with whom he shares two children. Tina married personal trainer Adam Crofts, but earlier this year she reportedly called time on their 14-year relationship. They share a son, Beau. According to a source, Tina is gutted about the breakup but is doing her best to stay positive and is enjoying her life as a single woman. She and Ryan occasionally make digs at each other on social media but have remained relatively harmonious - until Tina was accused of damaging her ex's car with a baseball bat during a late-night bust-up in March 2024.
