Mary Lou Retton says she's ‘West Virginia's first daughter' in bodycam video from arrest

Newly released bodycam footage of Mary Lou Retton's recent DUI arrest shows the five-time Olympic medalist attempting to use her star status to avoid being detained, at one point telling police that she's 'West Virginia's first daughter.' Retton, who was nabbed on a DUI charge on May 17 in Marion County, appears dazed, distressed and disheveled throughout the lengthy clip, released by Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday. Retton was initially pulled over when she was allegedly seen driving 'all over the roadway,' according to an incident report obtained by TMZ. Officers who questioned her said she smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, while a screw-top bottle of wine was seen in her passenger seat. The bodycam video shows the 57-year-old mom of four getting testy after refusing to blow into a breathalyzer and failing a field sobriety test conducted by a Fairmont City police officer. 'I'm West Virginia's first daughter!' she tells the cop. 'Bob Huggins gets away and, well, whatever,' she adds, referring to the former West Virginia basketball coach who was arrested for DUI in Pittsburgh in 2023. Throughout the footage, the trailblazing athlete can be seen with a portable oxygen tank, which she has reportedly relied on daily since a near fatal bout of pneumonia in 2023. Later, after being transported to the police station, Retton is seen fussing with paramedics when they advise her to go to the hospital to get her oxygen checked. 'No, f–k that! Put me in a cell,' she snaps. 'I'll die here. I'll die here and you guys will live with that.' After being taken into custody, Retton was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or drugs. She was released that same day on $1,500 bond, according to online records. During a court appearance last month, Retton entered a no contest plea to the first-time, non-aggravated DUI charge and was ordered to pay a $100 penalty.

Horrifying footage shows moment cliff diver slipped and fell 22 metres

Canadian high diver Molly Carlson has withdrawn from the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series following a terrifying fall that sent her plunging several stories into the ocean. The 26-year-old Olympic athlete took to social media to share footage of the terrifying incident. In the video, Carlson can be seen drawing closer to the edge of the 22-metre high platform. Right after she jumps, she appears to slip on the board and fall off the platform. In the few seconds she's airborne, Carlson manages to rotate her body and land feet-first. Immediately after she lands, onlookers can be seen rushing to her side. 'Scariest moment of my life…,' she wrote in her caption. 'It breaks my heart to announce that I will not be competing in the second stop of the @redbullcliffdiving World Series here in Italy as I've suffered a really scary accident. One of my nightmares came true. 'First of all I am so grateful to be okay. I never imagined in my life that I would ever slip off of a high diving platform but it happened. 'I'm SHOCKED at my reflex skills to find my feet like a cat and be okay. Unfortunately on the takeoff I got a massive bruise on my foot. I considered powering through and diving on it but it just wasn't the right choice for my health. 'Thank you to everyone in advance for your kind words, I am okay. Italy, I'm so glad I still got a few beautiful dives in xoxo, until next time, Ciao.' People online were shocked to see the footage. 'That's scary as sh*t. I felt anxiety just watching the video,' one person commented. 'My stomach sank reading this…' said another. 'Super impressive save. Especially considering the literal life and death stakes. Really hope she is able to continue competing, I could easily see something like this being enough of a mental strain to end a career,' commented another. Just one day after her initial announcement, Carlson took to social media again to share a different angle of the fall. It shows the exact moment her foot slipped on the platform, and in slow-motion, captures the horrifying few seconds she had to correct her form. 'PSA: Always measure your run up correctly,' she warned in her caption. 'This new angle of my near death experience is insane. The Slomo and the song is so dramatic I'm so sorry. I had to. 'This angle really helped me understand that my toes were already going to be past the platform when I landed because I didn't measure my run up with 100% power. And then when I went for the dive I gave it 200% power. 'Overall, I'm okay and I will definitely learn from this. So so so proud of the other girls who competed into the big waves today! Can't wait to be back up there with you.'

The 11-time Olympic medalist also seemingly took a shot at Gaines' physical appearance, alluding to her looking like a male, before later apologizing for her remarks on X. 'I wanted to follow up from my last tweets,' Biles wrote. 'I've always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. The current system doesn't adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn't help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for.' In a statement to One America News, Skinner accused Biles of some concerning behavior during their time together on the USA Olympic team during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Advertisement 'Throughout my own career, I endured being belittled, dismissed, and ostracized behind the scenes by Simone,' Skinner said. 'The pressure to stay silent was immense. 'I kept quiet out of respect—for the sport, for my teammates, and for the ideal of unity among athletes. But witnessing this kind of public shaming, especially from someone in a position of influence, makes that silence no longer acceptable.' BREAKING NEWS Simone Biles DELETES social media account in wake of transgender athlete feud with Riley Gaines

Three weeks after sparking a war of words with anti-trans activist Riley Gaines, apologizing for her targeted remarks, and being inundated with comments about the incident since, seven-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles has deleted her account on X, formerly Twitter. Biles de-activated her account, which had nearly two million followers, after she came to the defense of a transgender high school athlete that Gaines had been attacking. But after Biles personally insulted Gaines, it opened up a flood gate of attacks which appears to have led the 28-year-old gymnast - considered the greatest of all time - to remove her account on the platform. Biles still has her accounts on Threads (with 2.1m followers) and Instagram (12.4m followers) active. Gaines decided to deliver a parting shot to the gymnast, claiming that Biles '-has an incredibly unpopular and morally indefensible take - gets rightfully ridiculed for it - issues a groveling public apology after unrelenting backlash - deletes account to pretend it never happened'. Gaines, who made a career out of politically advocating against trans people in sports after finishing tied for fifth with a trans woman at a swim meet, concluded, 'Sad to see such a phenom go down like this'.

Aussie Olympic legend Leisel Jones breaks down in tears while opening up about suicide moment

Three-time Olympic gold medal winner Leisel Jones broke down while opening up about her mental health battle and how 14 years ago she almost took her own life. The swimming legend was a guest speaker at the Albury Wodonga Winter Solstice on Saturday night where she urged people to reach out for help if they need it. 'I'd really like to talk about the hope and the light at the end of the tunnel,' Jones said. 'And I distinctly remember sitting down with my psychologist after 2011 when I had contemplated taking my own life. 'I remember Lisa saying to me, she said there is light at the end of the tunnel. I was like, who bloody blew it out because I can't see it, and I just feel like it's never getting any closer, but extraordinarily it does. 'And that light will always be there, but you just have to find it, and sometimes you do have to light it yourself. Jones has been very open about her struggles with mental health over the years 'It's a lot of hard work. You do have to work through it, but the first thing is recognising that you may have a problem and that you may want to work through it. It is incredibly brave to go and seek help. 'I personally, I've got a mental health care plan. I'm about to start with a psychologist on Tuesday. It's all about taking that first step, getting in there, really digging deep. 'It's gritty, it's awful, and it sometimes feel like it's a waste of time. But trust me, it's so worth it, because there is hope out there.' The decorated athlete contemplated suicide in 2011 while she was on a training holiday in Spain. But her coach at the time, and current Head Coach of Swimming Australia, Rohan Taylor interrupted her and took her to get the help she desperately needed. 'I did not care for my mental health whatsoever, because it was completely neglected and was not important, and even as a youngster, when I was coming up, I was told that we were not allowed to use psychologists, because psychologists were for weak athletes,' she said. 'So I was denied access to a psychologist as a 14 year-old girl who was going to her first Olympic Games. 'And that was devastating to me, because I really could have benefited talking about mental health, because I did not believe I was a weak athlete. 'I believed I was very strong, but I just did not have that connection with strong mental health and a strong body. So that internal connection between mind and body is so important.' Jones won 14 individual world records, nine Olympic medals, 10 Commonwealth Games Gold medals and 23 National titles during her career.
