Jon Cooper will return behind the bench for Team Canada at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, and he won't be going alone. Hockey Canada announced on Monday that Cooper's support staff from the recent 4 Nations Face-Off triumph, Bruce Cassidy, Rick Tocchet, and Peter DeBoer will once again join him as assistant coaches, forming a familiar and experienced group aiming for Olympic gold. Ducks goaltender Damian Clara to represent his home country–Italy at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026

The 20-year-old goaltender for the Anaheim Ducks could not believe his ears when he heard–'Hey, we've got our top six guys and you're one of them.' Damian Clara received this beyond-belief news on June 16. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The netminder only talked about it with Dan Arritt of NHL Network on July 18. He innocently told Arritt, 'I didn't even know there was a thing. I just got a call, and I was like–Okay, wow. What's that?' Clara hails from Brunico, Italy, and he's going to represent his home country at the 2026 Olympics! How does Damian Clara feel about representing Italy in the 2026 Winter Olympics ? 'It's a big honor. Really happy to get the trust. I will do my best to go there and hopefully help the team. It's our goal, and we'll see what happens,' Clara told Arritt. When Arritt asked him how he viewed competing in the Olympics? The netminder said, 'Just see it as a challenge. There's nothing to lose. Exciting opportunity–as I'm still in the development. And it's a great thing for Italian hockey to invite some of the best players in the world into our rink and obviously match up with our team. ' Arritt asked him if he used his stature to intimidate the players on the rink. The 6-foot-6, 214-pounder goalie said, 'Sometimes, I open up and I play too aggressive and make life hard for myself. That's something else I've learned–just use what's there the best way possible, and I think there's still some steps I can take to accomplish that and get more out of it.' Six players from the NHL will compete in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games Apart from the goggle-eyed goalie, six others will play in the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026–Rasmus Dahlin(defenseman and captain for the Buffalo Sabres), Gabriel Landeskog(left winger and captain for the Colorado Avalanche), Lucas Raymond(ice hockey winger for Detroit Red Wings), Adrian Kempe(ice hockey player for the Los Angeles Kings), Victor Hedman(defenseman and captain for Tampa Bay Lightning), and William Nylander(ice hockey forward for Toronto Maple Leafs)–but they would all be representing Sweden. Even as neutrals, Russians remain barred from luge at 2026 Winter Olympics

Russian luge athletes will not be allowed to qualify for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics even as neutrals, the International Luge Federation (FIL) said after a vote on Wednesday. The 24-7 decision to continue an existing exclusion from FIL competitions was taken at the governing body's congress in Tampere, Finland. The congress also decided 24-8 in a second vote not to authorise a programme for neutral Russian athletes. 'As a result, Russian athletes and their entourage will not be permitted to participate in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games,' FIL said in a statement. ALSO READ | Russian teams remain banned from competing at 2026 Winter Games FIL president Einars Fogelis, a Latvian, said the congress had made its position clear. 'This outcome reflects our collective responsibility to uphold fair and safe competition. We fully respect the diversity of views within our community, especially from our athletes,' he added. The International Olympic Committee said last month that Russian teams, including the powerful national ice hockey side, remained banned from next year's Games as part of sanctions following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. A small number of individual Russian and Belarusian athletes took part in the Paris 2024 summer Olympics after rigorous vetting by the IOC and as neutrals without national flags or anthems. Four Russian figure skaters in men's and women's singles have been approved by the International Skating Union to try to qualify for the 2026 Olympics as neutral athletes.

2 Winnipeg Jets named to Olympic hockey rosters

At least a couple of Winnipeg Jets will get to represent their country on sports biggest stage next year. All of the 12 countries who qualified for next year's Olympic men's hockey tournament named the first six players to their roster, and two Jets players were among the initial selections for the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. Forwards Nikolaj Ehlers and Nino Niederreiter were both chosen by their respective countries, but goalie Connor Hellebuyck was not selected by USA Hockey after helping them to a second place finish at the 4 Nations Face-off tournament. Ehlers played for Denmark at this year's World Championship and also helped his country qualify during last summer's Olympic qualification tournaments. Ehlers days with the Jets appear to be numbered though as he'll become an unrestricted free agent in around two weeks time. Story continues below advertisement Niederreiter was selected by his home country of Switzerland. The 32-year-old scored two goals in four games for Switzerland at this year's worlds in his third straight year at the tournament. Ehlers will make his Olympic debut, but it'll be the second Olympic Winter Games for Niederreiter after playing in the last Olympics with NHLers back in 2014. While Hellebuyck was not chosen, USA Hockey did not name any goalies to its initial roster and went with six skaters instead in Quinn Hughes, Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Charlie McAvoy, and Matthew and Brady Tkachuk. Canada selected five forwards and one blueliner to start it's roster. Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point and Sam Reinhart were all chosen. It'll be Crosby's third Olympic games, while McDavid will finally make his long-awaited Olympic debut. The men's Olympic ice hockey tournament begins on February 11.
