Neeraj Chopra reclaims number one spot in world rankings, Nadeem at fourth spot
New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): Indian world champion and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra reclaimed his number one spot in men's javelin throw world rankings from Anderson Peters of Grenada following a string of brilliant performances on the international stage. World Athletics updated the rankings earlier this week, increasing Neeraj's points to 1,445 compared to Peters' tally of 1,431, according to Also, Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem sits at number four with 1,370 points to his name. Germany's Julian Weber, who has the best throw of 2025 so far, a 91.06 effort at the Doha Diamond League, is third in the rankings, and Czechia's Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, is in fifth spot, completing a very impressive-looking top five. Neeraj lost his top spot to Peters back in September 2024, just shortly after the Paris Olympics, where he attained a silver medal with a throw of 89.45, and Peters took home the bronze. The year 2025 has been incredible for Neeraj, as he kickstarted with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a very special second-place finish at Doha Diamond League, where he crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time ever with a throw of 90.23 m. He also went on to secure a second spot in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month and resumed his winning ways with back-to-back titles at Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike this month, with best efforts of 88.16 m and 85.29 m. Neeraj has outdone Peters in all their four battles this year, extending his streak over his Grenada rival. The last time he finished behind him was during the 2022 World Athletics Championships, when Neeraj had to settle for a silver with a throw of 88.39, as Peters threw a solid 89.91 m. Overall, the Tokyo 2020 Gold medalist leads Peters by 16-5 in major javelin throw competition finals. Both are expected for another face off at Neeraj Chopra Classic event at Bengaluru on July 5. Until recently, Essengue was just a regular teenager playing basketball — and that too without any college experience — but he quickly became a trending topic and the talk of the town after being selected in the top 15. Who is Noa Eseengue? Born in 2006 in Orleans, Loiret, France, Essengue began his basketball journey through the French youth development system with Orleans Loiret Basket. In 2021, the then 18-year-old signed his first professional contract with Centre Fédéral de Basket-ball. After spending two years with Centre Fédéral, Essengue moved to the German league and joined Ratiopharm Ulm. He spent one season with Ulm before making a significant leap in his career. In the 2024–25 season, he joined the top professional tier and never looked back. Essengue averaged 10.7 points and five rebounds for Ulm. Gaston played college basketball for the UNLV Rebels from 2005 to 2007. He averaged 5.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game in 65 appearances. Though Gaston's name gained attention during the 2007 season, he went undrafted in the 2007 NBA Draft. He went on to play professionally in countries like France and Turkey for over a decade. 'I don't really have a sporty family,' Essengue told 'But I think I have the advantage of having a very close-knit family. When I was little, I didn't live with my dad, but mostly with my older brother Mathis and my mom. I followed my older brother a lot; as soon as he changed sports, I followed him everywhere. He started doing judo, I followed him and did it for five years. After that, he went to tennis, and I went to tennis too. One day he decided to play basketball, and I signed up too. I started to enjoy it and thought, 'Why not make it my career?' he revealed.' Ayush Shetty, Tanvi Sharma storm into quarter-finals of US Open 2025 badminton tournament
Iowa [US], June 27 (ANI): Indian shuttlers Ayush Shetty and Tanvi Sharma marched into the quarter-finals of the US Open 2025 badminton tournament here after registering victories in their second-round fixtures. Fourth seed Ayush Shetty, 34th in the badminton rankings, had to endure through three games before finally getting the better of his compatriot Tharun Mannepalli, world No. 54, by a 21-12, 13-21, 21-15 scoreline in the men's singles round of 16. The Indian badminton player will face Kuan Lin Kuo of Chinese Taipei in the final eight on Friday, as per the Meanwhile, Tanvi Sharma marched into the women's singles quarter-finals following a dominating 21-18, 21-16 straight games win over Thailand's Pitchamon Opatniputh, the world No. 58 and the 2023 junior world champion. Tanvi, the junior world No. 2 and 66th in the senior rankings, will face Karupathevan Letshanaa of Malaysia in the quarters. The world No. 50 Letshanaa made it to the top eight after ousting India's Aakarshi Kashyap in the second round. The Malaysian won the hard-fought match 21-17, 20-22, 21-13. Qualifier Ira Sharma's run also concluded following a 22-20, 11-21, 21-12 defeat at the hands of Ukrainian seventh seed Polina Buhrova, who was also responsible for knocking India's Shriyanshi Valishetty out of the BWF Super 300 tournament in the opening round.
