UAE launches largest water supply project from Egypt to southern Gaza

The UAE has announced it will launch the largest water supply project from Egypt's Rafah border to the Gaza Strip, coming as part of its ''Operation Chivalrous Knight III' to provide urgent aid to Gaza, according to a press release. It is slated to provide up to 15 liters of desalinated water per person daily, benefiting up to 600,000 people in need within Gaza. The war on Gaza has destroyed up to 80 percent of its water infrastructure, according to the press release. The press release added that the campaign officially revealed, during a press conference held at the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU) headquarters in Deir al-Balah, that construction has begun on the 315 mm water transmission line spanning 6.7 kilometers. The media director for Operation Chivalrous Knight III in Gaza, Sharif al-Nayrab, said in a statement, 'This new water pipeline is more than a rapid response to the urgent thirst crisis in Gaza; it is a continuation of the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, particularly in the face of the humanitarian disaster caused by war.' He added that the UAE has spearheaded numerous relief efforts for Gaza, including, 'building desalination stations and delivering water tankers to drilling wells and maintaining water networks'. The Deputy Director-General of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility for Technical Affairs, Omar Shatat, hailed the UAE's tireless humanitarian work since the war on Gaza broke out. A civil society representative in Gaza, Khalil Abu Shammala, also praised the UAE and its vital role in relief efforts, especially through 'Operation Chivalrous Knight III', according to the press release.

'Chivalrous Knight 3' launch biggest water supply project to Gaza

At a press conference held at the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU) headquarters in Deir al Balah, the operation revealed that a new 315mm water transmission line, stretching 6.7 kilometres, is now under construction. The pipeline will connect the UAE-established desalination plant on the Egyptian side to a displacement area between Khan Younis and Rafah governorates. The project is expected to provide 15 litres of desalinated water per person daily, benefiting around 600,000 residents in southern Gaza, where more than 80% of water infrastructure has been destroyed due to the dire ongoing developments in Gaza Strip. Sharif Al-Nayrab, media director for Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Gaza, stated, 'This new water pipeline is more than a rapid response to the urgent thirst crisis in Gaza; it is a continuation of the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, particularly in the face of the humanitarian disaster caused by war.' He added that the UAE has consistently led relief efforts in Gaza, from building desalination stations and delivering water tankers to drilling wells and maintaining water networks, culminating in this vital initiative aimed at securing safe drinking water for the most affected areas. Omar Shatat, Deputy Director-General of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility for Technical Affairs, expressed gratitude to the UAE, which has been on the frontlines of humanitarian support since the onset of the war. He noted that UAE-funded projects have helped municipalities and civil society institutions maintain essential services amid extremely challenging conditions. Khalil Abu Shammala, a representative of civil society in Gaza, praised the UAE's crucial role and the humanitarian projects implemented under the Operation Chivalrous Knight 3. He also emphasised that initiatives like this provide residents with access to safe and healthy water, strengthening their resilience in the face of persistent crises. This initiative marks a new chapter in Operation Chivalrous Knight 3's efforts to repair critical infrastructure in Gaza, particularly in the water sector, and is part of broader UAE-led humanitarian operations to mitigate the disaster and support the steadfastness of the local population.

UAE to drill potable water wells in Gaza

The UAE's 'Operation Chivalrous Knight 3' is partnering with Palestine's Coastal Municipalities Water Utility to provide access to clean drinking water to the Gaza Strip. It will involve the drilling of two advanced, high-capacity wells in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis to alleviate the growing water crisis. Omar Shatat, Deputy Director-General of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, said the wells are expected to meet the water needs of approximately 10,000 people. The project will unfold in phases, with the first involving the strengthening of water supply lines from Egypt via a transmission pipeline to Rafah, and the second focusing on primitive wells using the hand pump system. With 1.5 million people in Gaza threatened by the water shortage, 'Operation Chivalrous Knight 3' has focused on supporting several projects that ensure those impacted by the devastating conflict have access to clean drinking water.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and ensure access to clean water amid the severe crisis and hardships faced by residents. The project aims to provide potable water across various regions of the Gaza Strip, helping to alleviate the growing water crisis. This phase will involve drilling advanced, high-capacity wells, following two earlier stages, the first of which strengthened water supply lines from Egypt via a transmission pipeline to Rafah, and the second focused on primitive wells using the hand pump system. Sharif Al-Nairab, Media Director for Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Gaza, emphasised that the operation continues to implement humanitarian projects to ease daily hardships for Gaza's population. He also underscored the operation's strong focus on the water crisis, which threatens 1.5 million residents, by supporting infrastructure and providing safe, usable water sources. Omar Shatat, Deputy Director-General of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, noted that the UAE has been among the first responders to assist Gaza's residents through Operation Chivalrous Knight 3. Since day one of the crisis, the UAE has launched a range of vital projects, particularly in the water sector. He confirmed that the current phase involves drilling two new wells in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, expected to meet the water needs of approximately 10,000 people, a significant step in addressing the worsening water shortage. This initiative represents another important milestone in the series of humanitarian interventions by Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, which aims to mitigate the suffering of Gaza's population and provide critical resources, especially in the face of severe challenges in the water sector.
