Sewage to resource: Muttathara plant gets a sustainable upgrade

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major step toward sustainable urban sanitation and resource recovery, the city corporation is set to implement Omniprocessor technology for the first time in Kerala at the Muttathara sewage treatment plant (STP). This pioneering project aims to treat accumulated sludge while producing clean water, electricity, and ash from sewage waste. A tripartite agreement was recently signed between the city corporation, Kerala Water Authority (KWA), and Ankur Scientific Private Ltd to execute the project. It is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with Ankur Scientific providing technical support. The Omniprocessor system separates water vapour from solid waste. The solids are incinerated to produce energy, while the vapour is condensed into clean, potable water. Officials note that this self-sustaining process will significantly reduce sludge volume and generate reusable resources at the Muttathara facility. According to corporation secretary Jahamgeer S, the plant is expected to become operational within two months. "This is the best sludge treatment technology currently available in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire è più facile che mai BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo It not only tackles the waste problem but also converts it into valuable resources like water and electricity," he said. He added that this technology is essential for the complete removal of sludge waste at the plant. The project follows a techno-financial feasibility study conducted by a state govt-appointed committee in Oct last year. The Omniprocessor system is expected to significantly boost the city's ability to manage sewage waste in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. KWA has floated an e-tender for the second time to select a private partner for a proposed tertiary treatment plant at the same site. The earlier tender did not receive any qualified bids. Two companies participated in the tender floated in April, and the new bids will be opened on June 21. Selection will follow a detailed technical and financial evaluation. Tertiary treatment is the final stage of wastewater processing and uses advanced methods like filtration, adsorption and disinfection to remove remaining contaminants. "We need a firm with proven expertise in tertiary treatment," a KWA official said, noting that the treated water will be suitable for non-potable uses like irrigation and industrial applications. The Rs 17-crore project includes Rs 2 crore for an overhead tank. Once complete, it will be the first such facility in the state and is expected to pave the way for large-scale wastewater reuse in the capital. The tertiary plant is expected to be operational in 18 months. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
