Yorkshire sign Pakistan batter Ul-Haq for run-in

London, July 21 (UNI) Yorkshire have signed Pakistan batter Imam Ul-Haq as an overseas player for the remainder of the season. The 29-year-old comes replaces India's Ruturaj Gaikwad, who will not be joining Yorkshire for their final five County Championship fixtures. Gaikwad had agreed a deal which would begin from Tuesday's game against reigning champions Surrey at Scarborough but pulled out for personal reasons, and he will also be available for the One-Day Cup. Ul-Haq, who previously had a short-term spell with Somerset in 2022 when he played three County Championship games, will now go straight into Yorkshire's squad to face the Division One leaders. "We're delighted that Imam has joined us and that he will be available immediately," general manager of cricket Gavin Hamilton said. "Whilst we were naturally disappointed that Ruturaj couldn't join up with the squad, in Imam we have an exceptional player of proven international quality. "Imam has an impressive record and is already familiar with domestic cricket in this country which will stand us in good stead for a crucial block of fixtures." Ul-Haq has played 24 Tests, 75 one-dayers and two T20 internationals for Pakistan, scoring a combined total of 4,741 runs, including 12 centuries, according to a BBC news. He also helped Pakistan Television win the domestic President's Trophy earlier this year. UNI BM

The club confirmed Imam's arrival following Gaikwad's withdrawal from his planned stint due to personal reasons. The 28-year-old left-hander has compiled three centuries in 24 Test matches and nine hundreds in 75 ODIs for Pakistan. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! He also has prior experience in English conditions, having represented Somerset during the 2022 County Championship. The left-handed batter will slot directly into Yorkshire's squad for their upcoming County Championship match against Surrey at Scarborough. He will also feature in their One-Day Cup fixtures and remain with the team until the Championship concludes in September. Poll Do you think Imam-ul-Haq will be a valuable addition to Yorkshire's squad? Yes, absolutely! No, not really. Imam's recent form adds to his credentials. In March this year, he played a pivotal role in helping Pakistan Television clinch the President's Cup, one of the country's major domestic tournaments. His familiarity with English pitches and domestic setups could prove valuable for Yorkshire in this crucial stretch of the season. Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire's general manager of cricket , expressed his delight at the signing. "We're delighted that Imam has joined us and that he will be available immediately," Hamilton said. "Whilst we were naturally disappointed that Ruturaj couldn't join up with the squad, in Imam we have an exceptional player of proven international quality. "Imam has an impressive record and is already familiar with domestic cricket in this country which will stand us in good stead for a crucial block of fixtures. "We are grateful for the speed in which he has arrived in the country and everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him through until the end of the season."

"Not Too Sure": Australia All-Rounder On Plans Of ODI Return Despite Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis Retirement

Australia all-rounder Tim David has ruled out the possibility of making his return to the ODI format after the shock retirements of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis from the 50-over cricket. With Australia revamping their squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Australia selectors feel David, who is known for his T20 assault, has a chance to find his spot back in the side. David has extended his stint with the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL for another two seasons but remains without a domestic contract in Australia. He featured in just one match of the domestic One-Day Cup for Tasmania in November 2021 and hasn't held a domestic deal since his rookie contract with Western Australia in 2017–18, before representing Singapore. Since his last ODI in 2023, he has not played any 50-over List A matches. The 29-year-old has played just four ODIs for Australia but has been a mainstay of Australia's T20I team since 2022 with over 50 appearances in the shortest format. "Definitely having conversations in the background with my coaches, and people that I want to talk to about my game at the moment," David said on Tuesday. "I'm not too sure, to be honest. It's not the immediate plan. We've got such a busy year, to be honest, leading up to this T20 World Cup. The winter actually looks quite different for me this year. Previously, I would have been away for four or five months in a row over the winter playing competitions. And now we've got so many T20 series that there's not much time to think about much else. So we'll see how that develops. But, at the moment, no plans." David is currently undergoing hamstring rehabilitation in Perth while preparing for Australia's upcoming T20I tour of the Caribbean, which begins on July 20 in Jamaica. He has enjoyed a rare month at home following the injury he sustained during the IPL, where he played a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden title run, despite missing the playoffs due to the setback. He was originally set to return to action in the Global Super League for the Hurricanes, starting on Thursday, but his recovery has taken slightly longer than anticipated. "Initially, that was the plan, especially once the Hurricanes had a team in the GSL. Unfortunately, the injury and just the nature of it (meant it) was going to be a pretty tight time schedule. And I've probably got a couple of things that I need to tick off with the CA guys when I get over to Jamaica just before they're fully comfortable, but I'm feeling confident. And unfortunately, just the timeframe of what those recoveries look like, it was tough for me to get up (for the GSL)," he said. The series against the West Indies marks the start of a stretch of eight consecutive T20Is for Australia. Following the five-match series in the Caribbean, they will return home to host South Africa in a three-match T20I series in Darwin and Cairns, ahead of a three-match ODI series against the same opponent. Australia will then head to New Zealand for three T20Is in early October, followed by five home T20Is against India in late October and early November. During this period, David will skip The Hundred due to its scheduling clash with the South Africa series but is expected to return to the Caribbean to play for the St Lucia Kings in the CPL.

Western Province embrace chilly Cape Town winter to set pre-season in full swing

FILE - All-Round Mihlali Mpongwana has been one of the new generation that have helped Western Province reach two consecutive One-Day Cup finals. Photo: Shaun Roy/BackpagePix On the bowling front, the squad has been boosted by the pace and experience of fast bowler Tshepo Moreki. With many of their star players, including Kyle Verreynne, David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi playing various formats for the Proteas, Province have added left-handed opening batter Jiveshan Pillay into their squad from the Warriors and right-handed opening batter Joshua van Heerden from the Titans. Having gone through the season without the trophy, where the Boys in Blue finished fifth in the Four-Day competition, eighth in the One Day Cup and fourth in the T20 Challenge, the Cape Town-based unit has had an early start to their pre-season preparations. THE Western Province Men's team has embraced the chilly Cape Town winter as pre-season preparations are in full swing. Pillay is already with the squad in their pre-season training, while Moreki and Mihlali Mpongwana are expected to join the pre-season preparations this week, having just returned from the Caribbean with the South Africa 'A' squad. Van Heerden is expected to join the squad at the beginning of August. Perhaps the most important addition at Newlands this season is the newly appointed coach, Rory Kleinveldt. Kleinveldt makes his return to Newlands following a successful tenure in the UK, where he served as Lead Bowling Coach for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. The 42-year-old's appointment follows the departure of former head coach, Salieg Nackerdien, who concluded his tenure at the end of the 2024/25 season. The Boys in Blue got their winter programme underway with a challenging hike up the demanding Constantia Nek trail under the supervision of Strength and Conditioning coach Dieter Swanepoel. 'We are four weeks into our pre-season program thus far, and I'm very happy with the progress that the guys have made,' said Swanepoel. 'We started our winter training off with a couple of hikes up Constantia Nek and Table Mountain, balancing the training objectives with a bit of team cohesion and good banter. The players also underwent their baseline fitness profiling before commencing with the formal strength and conditioning program. 'The wet weather hasn't been ideal for our cardiovascular sessions, but it just meant more time indoors on the machines. Every winter it is pretty much the same weather, wet and cold, so it's just a matter of being adaptable and at times creative. 'The guys' attitudes and energies have been awesome thus far. There has been a good focus and determination from the guys on how they are going about their business, which is exciting.' Swanepoel concluded. WSB Western Province Men 2025/26 squad Beuran Hendricks, Bongile Mfunelwa, Dane Paterson, Daniel Smith, Eddie Moore, George Linde, Jiveshan Pillay, Jono Bird, Joshua van Heerden, Juan James, Kyle Simmonds, Mihlali Mpongwana, Mthiwekhaya Nabe, Oliver Whitehead, Raeeq Daniels, Tshepo Moreki, Valentine Kitime. National Contracts: David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi.
