Faster, cheaper NBN plans launch early

This month, three Internet Service Providers (ISPs) launched brand new NBN plans that promise both speed and affordability. Tangerine, SpinTel and Exetel each introduced anNBN 500 plan exclusively for customers on either a FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) or a HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connection type. But how do these plans compare to one other and others with similar speeds? And what can you expect to get if you sign up for one? Tangerine's new NBN 500 plan Customer favourite ISP, Tangerine, has a new NBN plan capable of reaching faster speeds than NBN 250 plans. At the time of writing, Tangerine's new 'Speedy Max' plan is the most affordable option around this speed tier. It boasts download speeds of 500Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps. The Speed Max plan is priced at $68.90 for the first six months, then the price increases to $88.90 per month. This offer ends December 31, 2025. Tangerine is also offering a high-speed trial for this plan. This means customers who sign up before September 14 2025 can expect faster speeds of 1000/50 until October 14 2025. After the trial ends, this plan will be reduced back to the advertised 500/50+ speeds. Tangerine customers are also treated to a number of bonuses, such as seven-day technical customer support and a $50 bonus when they refer a friend. SpinTel's new NBN 500 plan SpinTel's new 'Home Turbo' plan is a happy middle ground between its 'Fast' NBN 100 plan and its 'Turbofast' NBN 700 plans, and it's even cheaper than the NBN 100 plan by $2 per month. New customers can get this plan for $74 per month for the first six months then $84.95 per month thereafter. Customers on the Home turbo plan will receive download speeds of 500Mbps and upload speeds of 42Mbps at typical evening speeds. It comes with unlimited data, has no setup fee and allows customers to bring their own modem. Bundling a SpinTel NBN with a mobile SIM, will score you a discounted rate of just $18 per month with 23GB data. This is a saving of $3 per month. Exetel's new NBN 500 plan Exetel has waved goodbye to its catalogue of NBN plans and launched a 'one size fits all plan', sensibly named 'One Plan'. Priced at $80 per month, it offers download speeds up to 500Mbps and upload speeds up to 40Mbps with unlimited data. At the time of writing, there is no promo offer to go with this particular NBN plan but that's not a dealbreaker since this is fairly reasonably priced already for what you get. There is a caveat, however. In addition to doing away with multiple NBN plans, Exetel has also traded its 'five free speed boosts per month' in favour of 1,000Mbps speed boost for a price of $1 per day. Customers can however opt into its latest 'Hibernate' feature, which allows customers to voluntarily slow their speeds to 12/1Mbps with the click of a button via the Exetel app. This is great for people who travel often and won't be home to use their full bandwidth. Customers save $1 per day when hibernating their internet. Like Tangerine, Exetel also has a refer-a-friend program, but it will only save customers $1 off their bill per month. The friend will also receive $1 off per month for as long as both remain connected to the One Plan. If neither of these plans or providers spark your interest, here are some NBN plans capable of achieving similar speeds across a variety of other ISPs:

West Coast Regional Rates Rise 12 Percent – But Wait There's More

The West Coast Regional Council has approved a budget for the year that will see its general rate take rise by 12 per cent. But additional levies for Civil Defence and the new Tai o Poutini District Plan will boost many rate bills higher. The council adopted its 2025-2026 Annual Plan at a special meeting in Greymouth this morning. (Tues 24/6). The financial statements show the council will collect $14.3 million from the region's ratepayers this year, slightly less than the amount it allowed for in the Long Term Plan. Chair Peter Haddock says the council is not yet in a position to start repaying debt, but is now living within its budget and expects to return a surplus in two years' time. 'We inherited a shambles when we came in, and we were flying blind with the finances, but we now have a great corporate team and we are on track to get back into the black.' Discussion about how rate increases are presented to the public became heated when Cr Allan Birchfield queried the figure of 12 percent. If the increased levies for Civil Defence and the region's combined One Plan were factored in, the true rate rise would be 18.92 percent, and he would vote against it, he said. Council chief Executive Darryl Lew said the rationale for not including those charges in calculating the regional rate rise was that they were targeted rates. These were levied by the Regional Council on behalf of the District Councils and were separated out to make that transparent, he said. 'You wanted your vote recorded against the LTP (long-term plan) and it's not surprising that you are voting against this today because we're in line with the LTP that the rest of your colleagues voted for.' Cr Birchfield confirmed he did not agree with the LTP. The chair said he understood why. 'We had eight, long, hard workshops, went through with staff all the funding that was required to get this organisation back on track. It was a decimated sort of business when we came in here. 'We worked really hard and you chose not to attend any of those meetings; it was an insult to your fellow councillors and a bit of a kick on the guts for the ratepayers actually.' There had been only 25 submissions to the LTP and the council had heard them all, Mr Haddock said. 'You did not attend any of those and then you voted against it … and I find it offensive that you keep bringing it up.' Speaking later, Cr Birchfield said he had not attended the workshops because he had previously been censured and kicked off many council committees, and was tired of turning up and being told to leave. 'The point I was trying to make was that it's misleading to talk about an increase of 12 percent when it's a lot more than that when you add on the TTPP [Tai o Poutini District Plan] and Civil Defence charges.' The council's Corporate Service manager Peter Miller told LDR that ratepayers should not expect an exact 12 per cent hike on their invoices. 'That's the increase in dollars required for Council to deliver its back to basic services to the community at cost. The percentage increase or decrease for ratepayers depends on any change in their property valuation.' The increase in the TTPP levy reflected the growing cost of writing the new plan ordered by the government, Mr Miller said. "As costs have now become clearer with an expected increase in the loan associated with the TTPP work, Council is now passing on these costs to the recipients of this work, the community. For 2025/2026, the Council needed to raise $642,810 from the targeted TTPP rate. 'Council recognises this is a significant increase compared to 2023/2024 when costs were estimated at that stage,' Mr Miller said. Costs associated with emergency management had gone up as well, to cover an additional staff position and overheads. 'We recognise we need to do more to ensure community welfare and recovery from an event. "Consequently our costs associated with emergency management are increasing 25% for 2025/2026.' Other targeted rates were as agreed with the rating district committees for flood protection schemes. The council agreed to stick with the rate of $150,000 agreed with the joint Franz Josef rating district committee, despite new information, showing that maintenance and regular inspections of the town's new floodwalls would cost $262,487 for the year. The additional funds would have to come from the districts prudent reserve, and the rate would have to be increased in the next financial year, the council agreed.

T-Mobile: Sorry, But We're Raising Prices by $5 Per Line

PCMag editors select and review products independently. If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn commissions, which help support our testing. T-Mobile users woke up this morning to an unwanted surprise: a text from the carrier with news about a $5-per-month rate hike. "For the first time in nearly a decade, we're making an update to the price of some of our older monthly service plans," the message says. In May 2024, the carrier rolled out a similar rate hike for older plans like Simply Choice, One Plan, Magenta, and Magenta Max. Today's message, which uses almost the same language as last year's notice, says increases will roll out to other legacy plans that escaped 2024's rate increase. That said, it's possible a consumer could face a double whammy. T-Mobile told PCMag: "No one line that received a prior increase will receive an additional adjustment. Some customers who previously had a price adjustment on products other than smartphones may have an adjustment on an older phone plan." This time, the rate hike will start on April 2. But in some good news, T-Mobile says, 'Customers with our Price Lock guarantee won't be impacted.' The company also notes, "Any free line promotions you have will not be impacted.' Still, the price hike may hit customers who were led to believe the carrier could never increase rates. In 2017, T-Mobile introduced an "Un-contract" deal for certain plans that said, "Customers keep their price until THEY decide to change it." But in a letter to consumers last year, the carrier said the Un-contract promise actually just means that T-Mobile will cover the final monthly bill if the customer decides to leave following a price increase — something that was only briefly mentioned in an earlier support page back in 2018. As a result, if your T-Mobile plan only featured the Un-contract promise but not a specifically worded "price lock" guarantee, you can expect a rate change. To justify the latest price increase, T-Mobile published a web page that claims: 'Even with these updates, T-Mobile customers still save an average of 20% compared to AT&T and Verizon on comparable wireless and streaming services." But don't expect a big explanation for the price hike itself. 'We are updating the prices on some of our older phone plans in response to rising costs,' the carrier says in an FAQ. The same FAQ says the carrier targets older T-Mobile plans but doesn't specify which ones are affected. Users on Reddit report the price hike covers the Magenta Max, T-Mobile One, and legacy Sprint plans. Inevitably, the price hike is causing some consumers to look for alternatives. 'I have 12 lines, and this will push me out,' wrote one user on Reddit. The other big carriers, however, have also increased prices. A month ago, Verizon raised the price of its Mobile Protect Multi-Device plans from $60 to $68. That came after Unlimited and 5G plans got a $4-per-month per-line in January 2024. In December, an administrative fee went up 20 cents per month for each voice and data line. AT&T saw similar increases in 2024.
