Jimmy Barnes opens up about terrifying health scare: ‘If we have nine lives, I've used up at least seven'

If a near-death experience re-defines a person's life, rock music legend Jimmy Barnes has had multiple re-definitions. He's survived years of drug and alcohol addiction, countless health emergencies, and the open-heart surgery (his second) he endured 18 months ago. Barnes has famously stared death in the face and won. Again and again. 'I've confronted death a few times,' he laughed. 'But normally it's sort of self-inflicted.' 'If we have nine lives, I've used up at least seven.' Now the 69-year-old swears he will treat his final two with far more respect. Barnes has taken time out of his busy concert schedule to speak with 7News in an exclusive backstage interview before the Sydney show. He's nearing the end of his sell-out 'Defiant Tour' – his first solo tour since that near-death moment in December 2023. The man who could be described as the heart of Australian rock and roll, had suffered a savage bacterial infection of the heart. It came after complications from a hip replacement. Barnes has just about toured more hospital wards than concert venues in those 18 months – and he was glad to back on stage. And the Sydney gig was special: in the audience are the medical team from St Vincent's Hospital that saved his life. 'They're coming along to see how their little handiwork went,' he laughs. 'They saved my life. So, you know, I'm forever grateful.' So are his fans. Defiant shot to the top of the ARIA charts this month, his 16th Number One album. His publicity team says that's two more Number Ones than The Beatles, and three more than Taylor Swift. 'How lucky am I? It's extraordinary, isn't it? I don't take it for granted,' he said. 'When I think that, you know, joining Cold Chisel 50 odd years ago, 16-years-old and thinking, will we make a living? How long will the band be going? And to be doing this this long afterwards, and we're still having people turn up. It's a blessed life.' His life now is in a very different place to that teenager's but it's still driven by the same dream: to make music. But in December 2023, he and his wife genuinely believed that run of luck had come to its end. 'I literally turned to Jane and said, 'I think this might be it. I think it might have caught me finally'.' He revealed that he actually made preparations for the worst. 'I did do a lot of that,' he said. And as he lay in his hospital bed, he was writing music with a message that held the hint of a farewell. 'I've sort of changed the way I wrote the songs I wrote,' he admitted. 'And I'm letting everybody I know that I love them, know that I've had the best life, you know.' Surviving that has changed everything about his life. 'Well, I'm healthier'' he says. 'If I want to enjoy my family and the life that I've built and I want to continue to make music and be relevant and bring joy to people, I've got to stay fit, I've got to be healthy, I've got to be focused.' 'These days, I appreciate every single day, every step I take.' He still performs at 110 per cent and 120 decibels. His face looks ready to explode and he belts the lyrics to the back of the hall in that traditional 'Barnestorming' way. And he refuses to change or slow the pace. 'It's like having primal therapy every night. Your pain, your fears, your love, your anger - all in an hour and a half on stage - and you can walk away and say, 'I'm okay now'.' His next major milestone will be his 70th birthday next April. Any advice for those of us coming after him? 'I think you can always get better,' he says. 'I honestly believe the more focused I am, the more I look after myself, the more I open up to the people around me and listen to them, the better I get.' He insists he's heading into the best years of his life – as a husband, father, grandfather and musician. 'I think I'll be performing until I drop. Defiant,' he declares. 'I am defiant.'

Disney Fails to Halt YouTube From Poaching Key Executive Ahead of Licensing Renewal Talks

Disney's bid to temporarily block YouTube's hiring of Justin Connolly in a newly created role as global head of media and sports has been denied. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant on Wednesday concluded that Disney is unlikely to prevail on claims that YouTube illegally poached Connolly in violation of his contract with the entertainment giant. More from The Hollywood Reporter Dhar Mann Studios Staffs Up With Media Veterans (Exclusive) 'Awards Chatter' Live Pod: Sean Evans on a Decade of 'Hot Ones,' Buying the Show From BuzzFeed and Interviewing Secrets YouTube Stays Atop TV Distributor Rankings in April Last month, Disney filed a lawsuit faulting YouTube for Connolly's defection to YouTube to spearhead its media and sports division. It sought a temporary restraining order to prevent him from starting at the Google-owned company, claiming that he could leak confidential information or trade secrets belonging to Disney ahead of a licensing renewal with YouTube. In a court filing, YouTube argued that the order Disney seeks for Connolly to return to the company against his will or quit his new position is prohibited under California law. It stressed that Disney knew for over six weeks that he intended to leave Disney to join YouTube, meaning there's no emergency for the court to issue a temporary restraining order. Connolly has been working for YouTube for roughly two weeks. In discussions, Disney maintained that Connolly couldn't work for YouTube because he had a three-year fixed term contract that hadn't expired, according to a court document. It offered to release him from his contract following the renegotiation of their licensing deal. 'We are disappointed in today's ruling, but will continue to pursue our legal remedies,' said a Disney spokesperson in a statement. YouTube declined to comment. Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire Again, Raises Safety Questions

$3M Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire in Viral Video Priced at close to $3 million and limited to a planned 275 units, the Mercedes-AMG One hybrid hypercar is as exclusive as it gets, which is why the mere thought of one being damaged or lost is traumatic. Unfortunately, a new video has surfaced online of an AMG One burning to the ground. The clip was shared by user Chrimbu on social media, but no details were provided as to exactly where or how the blaze started. The fire does not appear to have been caused by an accident, though, which suggests the car unexpectedly caught alight. Complex Hybrid Powertrain To Blame? The extensively electrified powertrain of the AMG One isn't going to reduce the intensity of a fire. Besides the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, the One also features four electric motors and an 8.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. When exposed to extreme temperatures, lithium-ion batteries can result in thermal runaway. According to UL Research Institutes, this process causes the lithium-ion cell to enter a self-heating state that is difficult to stop. Furthermore, it makes it more challenging to extinguish such a fire. There's no way of knowing if the AMG One's powertrain caused the fire we see here, but it's likely that the battery and associated components further fueled the flames. When it's not lighting up the sky, the AMG One's performance is pretty hot, with the hypercar capable of a 0-62 mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds. It will reach around 218 mph, too. Not The First AMG One To Catch Alight Almost exactly two years ago, The Sun reported on another AMG One that was burned to a crisp. Allegedly, this one was being towed in Staffordshire, England, when it burst into flames. The fact that the car was switched off and being towed at the time makes this an especially bizarre event. 'We are aware of this incident involving a car that was being transported in a closed trailer as part of its assembly process,' said a spokesperson for Mercedes at the time. As one of AMG's most ambitious projects ever, Mercedes faced a number of hurdles in developing the hypercar. Ola Kallenius, Mercedes-Benz CEO, once even joked that the board must surely have been 'drunk' when it was decided to forge ahead with the car. Adapting the F1 powertrain for use on the street was one of the biggest challenges, and considering how long it took to get everything right, it's all the more disheartening that at least two Ones have been destroyed. Source: Mercedes-AMG Is The AMG One A Fire Risk? While hybrid and EV naysayers may be quick to point at the elevated fire risks of electrified cars, it's impossible to know for sure if this is an inherent flaw in the AMG hypercar. Certainly, two burned cars will raise eyebrows – especially since this is one of the most expensive cars in the world – but these could be entirely isolated incidents that have nothing to do with each other. Presently, no known recalls have been issued for the AMG One, nor have any known injuries occurred as a result of these fires. All we're left with, then, are two enormous insurance claims and a hypercar world deprived of two spectacular track toys.

Unlikely $19 outsider Femminile's value skyrockets after Group 1 South Australian Derby triumph

One of just two fillies in the race, Femminile has relished the quick turnaround from last week's Oaks to take out the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on Saturday for trainer Phillip Stokes. Under a cool Lachlan Neindorf, the daughter of Dundeel didn't have to go around a horse after sneaking runs along the rail, booting clear to score by three-quarters of a length as a $19 chance over $3.40 favourite Statuario, with $6.50 chance Lavalier a further length away in third. There weren't many more emotional wins than Lachlan Neindorf in his maiden Group One victory aboard Climbing Star in last year's Robert Sangster Stakes, but this year the young hoop was as unflustered as his ride. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today 'No more tears,' Neindorf said. 'It's funny, about a month afterwards I went over to Flemington, I rode one for Phil and the team, and I think it was Pat Carey next to Phil, he said, 'you must have taught that boy everything'. 'He said, 'I didn't tell him how to bloody cry!' So from that day onward, I go, you know what, I'm not crying again, no more.' In similar fashion to his victory aboard Climbing Star, Neindorf was happy to ride for luck and executed a pre-race plan to perfection. 'I was following Statuario, he was drawn one, I was drawn two, and that was just the plan early on, and then he sort of went to avenue out, and I lost the back of him, and from that point on, I just thought, 'you know what, let's make it up as we go here.' 'It's magical. It's amazing, really, sitting here thinking that all of a sudden now you've won two Group Ones, two consecutive years in a row. 'To have my family, my old man over there, he's got his top hat on he's a happy camper, so a few beers being sucked tonight.' Assistant trainer Tommy Stokes said the win greatly enhances Femminile's value, thrilled to get another major win for OTI Racing. 'I'm just very proud, especially another winner for OTI being a Group One, it's really special,' Stokes said. 'She's actually due to be sold after this prep so it's massive, she's super valuable now.'

Punchestown predictably unpredictable but Willie Mullins still in ascendancy

It's Punchestown, it's end-of-season, it's expectedly unpredictable, and the opening day of the 2025 meeting was certainly all of that, as the track welcomed 17,842 patrons. A 22-1 winner was followed by one at 50-1, then there was a little levity when an 8-1 shot prevailed, before two of the three Grade Ones returned huge upsets at odds of 18-1 and 22-1. What was much more predictable was that, despite those odds, Willie Mullins was in the ascendancy, winning two Grade Ones, and adding the valuable Goffs Defender Bumper to complete a 7,428-1 treble. The KPMG Champion Novice Hurdle was the first Grade One of the meeting, and 18-1 shot Irancy continued on his upward trajectory courtesy of a patient ride by Mark Walsh. Salvator Mundi went off quickly, with the short-priced, leftward-tending and poor-jumping Kopek Des Bordes his nearest pursuer for much of the trip. At one point they must have had 20 lengths and more to spare over the other quartet. As those early exertions began to tell on the first two, a couple of the other runners closed in, and it was Irancy, a winner at Fairyhouse's Easter festival, who moved best of all. Walsh allowed him to ease to the front coming off the last bend, and when he asked for more at the back of the last, he stretched away to win by a wide margin from the game Salvator Mundi. Karbau took third ahead of an eased-up Kopek Des Bordes, who completed a Mullins 1-2-3-4 in a race which he has farmed, having won seven of the last eight, and nine of the last 11 runnings of the race. 'Irancy has always been a good horse and met with a setback after winning here earlier in the season, but it might have been the best thing to have happened as he came here fresh,' said Mullins. 'I gave Kopek Des Bordes a nice break after Cheltenham and probably gave him too much and should have brought him to somewhere like Ayr or Perth. Looking at him in the parade ring, I thought he was carrying too much condition and that showed.' Mullins saddled five of the eight runners in the Grade One Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase and while two of the quintet fell and another was brought down, he was still responsible for the first two home. Ballyburn looked to have been gifted every opportunity as the field became depleted, but Danny Mullins spoiled the party as he brought 22-1 chance Champ Kiely through to lead after two out before pushing him clear for a facile success. 'Unbelievable,' said Danny Mullins. 'I'm just so lucky to be part of the team in Willie's. I'm just blessed to be on the team and get to ride some of the good ones on these days. 'This horse never really attacked when the loose horse upset him in Fairyhouse last week but, in fairness to Willie, he wasn't afraid to come back here. He knew the variable was stepping up five furlongs in trip and there was every chance he'd go and do that. 'I knew Paul was the horse to beat. The Gigginstown one was going to play a part, but we got the better of him off the bend and, yeah, he is a good horse to put it to bed nicely.' Mullins saddled four in the Goffs Defender Bumper and, in keeping with the theme of the day, it was the outsider of the quartet, the Ruth Duffield-ridden Wonderful Everyday, who fared best, seeing off the promising Green Hint. The Kildare Hunt Club Cross-Country Chase for the Ladies' Perpetual Cup is part of the tradition of this festival and this year's renewal provided a memorable moment for Richie O'Keeffe, who saddled the first two home. Victory went to Transprint, who gave jockey Tony Doyle his first winner on the track. Fifty-to-one chance Buy Some Time upset the gamble on fellow British raider Almuhit in the Albert Bartlett Triple Crown Series Final Handicap Hurdle. There were five runners within a length as they raced over the last, but it was Scottish raider Buy Some Time, ridden by Ben Smith and trained by his father, Mike, who quickened up best to land the spoils. Said the winning trainer: 'They all tell you that you can't beat the Irish and Willie comes over and beats us all, but it doesn't always happen that way. You have to be brave to take the risk and throw the darts!' There was further British success when the Harry Derham-trained Ascending Lark took the listed Killashee Hotel Handicap Hurdle, but there was some Cork success as the winning rider, Paul O'Brien, hails from Mitchelstown. The winner has been on a remarkable run since joining Derham early in 2024. From Haydock to Huntingdon, and Newcastle, Exeter and Ludlow, she came here unbeaten in five runs for the yard and benefited from a beautifully judged ride by O'Brien to extend that run to six. Derek O'Connor trained Bud Fox when he won a point to point, and he was in the saddle when the horse made a winning track debut in the Willie Coonan Memorial Bumper. Now trained by Gavin Cromwell, the son of Walk In The Park and Flaviana was in prime position throughout and justified considerable market confidence by quickening up late on to readily put the day's finale to bed.
