Centre sanctions Rs 744 crore under AMRUT 2.0 for water, sanitation upgrades in Prakasam district ULBs
ONGOLE: The Union government has sanctioned Rs 744.34 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme to improve civic infrastructure in four Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Prakasam district. Funds have been allocated to the Ongole Municipal Corporation (Rs 424.42 crore), Darsi (Rs 130.61 crore), Podili (Rs 126.17 crore), and Markapur (Rs 63.14 crore) for drinking water, drainage, sanitation, and internal roads. The Markapur water supply scheme will source water from the Gottipadiya resource point. District Public Health Engineering SE Sanjay has inspected the proposed water sources and submitted a feasibility report. The Union government has directed that the funds be used strictly for drinking water supply, drainage and seepage maintenance, and household tap connections. Tenders have been called for all four ULB projects, with submissions due by July 30. Ongole Municipal Commissioner Dr K Venkateswara Rao said the Rs 424.42 crore sanctioned for Ongole is split into two packages. The first package includes Rs 381.70 crore—Rs 320.05 crore for construction (18 overhead tanks, three filtration plants, and 535 km of new pipelines) and Rs 61.25 crore for 10-year maintenance. The second package includes Rs 42.72 crore—Rs 34.68 crore for construction (one filtration plant and 35 km pipelines) and Rs 8.04 crore for maintenance.

Andhra's Ongole MLA lays foundation stone for Rs 1 crore infra projects
ONGOLE: Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth Rs 1 crore under the Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC) limits on Sunday. OMC Mayor G Sujatha, Commissioner K Venkateswara Rao, and other officials were present. As part of the development activities, the MLA laid the foundation stone for the construction of a central divider costing Rs 85 lakh along the Ongole South Bypass Road-Summer Storage Tank. The divider is expected to improve pedestrian safety, particularly for morning walkers using the tank bund track. Additionally, Janardhana Rao inaugurated a completed Rs 14 lakh CC drain project in the 46th Division covering Kurnool Road and Alluri Sitarama Raju Nagar, aimed at addressing drainage issues in the area. Venkateswara Rao stated that a separate drinking water pipeline costing Rs 70 lakh for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya has been completed and will be inaugurated soon to meet the school's drinking water requirements. 'These projects are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and improve living conditions in Ongole,' he said.

Prakasam ULBs await Rs 14.22 crore as ASC Grants
ONGOLE: Prakasam district's seven Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are eagerly awaiting the release of Adverse Seasonal Condition (ASC) Grants from the State government, crucial for addressing water scarcity amid intensifying summer conditions. The State is expected to release Rs 14.22 crore in ASC Grants, earmarked for emergency water supply management and infrastructure repairs. These include fixing leakages in water pipelines, maintaining pumps and borewells, drilling new ones, and transporting potable water through tankers. The ULBs including, Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC), and the municipalities of Markapur, Kanigiri, Giddalur, Chimakurthy, Darsi, and Podili, submitted their summer water action plans in March 2025. The proposals outlined fund requirements for urgent civic interventions to tide over seasonal challenges.
