Oshawa Generals Welcome Promising Finnish Forward Selected in First Round of Import Draft

On Wednesday, the Oshawa Generals announced that the hockey club has signed import forward Onni Kalto to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Kalto, 18, recorded 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists) through 44 games with the U20 TPS team in the U20 SM-sarja league in Finland during the 2024-25 season. Additionally, he played three regular season games and five playoff games for TPS in the top Finnish league Liiga. The Generals used their first-round selection in the 2025 CHL Import Draft to select Kalto 41st overall. The Helsinki, Finland native was ranked 57th amongst European skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2025 NHL Draft. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-2 forward did not hear his name called and will re-enter the draft. Ten OHL Players Named To USA's Hlinka Gretzky Cup Selection Camp USA announced the 38 players who have been invited to their 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup selection camp. The camp is being held in Plymouth, Michigan at the USA Hockey Arena from July 28-Aug. 3. 'Onni will bring some experience and leadership to our group. He skates well and sees the ice well. We are looking forward to seeing Onni in the red, white, and blue,' said Oshawa GM Roger Hunt. Oshawa recently also signed their second-round pick from the import draft, Russian goalie Andrei Bondarev. Now, we wait and see if they will sign their third-round selection Vadim Smirnov, or let him play out the 2025-26 season in Russia before trying to recruit him for the following year. Oshawa Generals' "Crease Battle" Next Season Adds A Third Member; Russian Import Goaltender Signs With Team The Oshawa Generals haven't had to worry about not knowing who their guy was in the crease when they needed a big win. A significant reason why the organization has advanced to consecutive OHL Finals is due to the goaltender they have had in the net, Jacob Oster. Finnish forward Lauri Sinivuori was an import player for the Gens last season and played an important role in the middle six of their forward lineup. However, he is leaving the organization to head back home and play for the Finnish club he grew up playing and developing for, HIFK. Czech defenseman David Svozil's playing destination for next season is still undetermined. He could return as Oshawa's third and final import player; however, he wasn't a regular in their lineup during the playoffs. Oshawa is losing Luca Marrelli, Andrew Gibson, and Luca D'Amato, so there are openings on the blueline. But the organization has recruited two 2008-born American defensemen already, Colin Feeley and Leo Laschon.
