NBA Draft 2025: Atlanta Hawks select Georgia's Asa Newell in first round

The Atlanta Hawks selected University of Georgia star Asa Newell with the No. 23 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Hawks swapped their No. 13 pick with the New Orleans Pelicans to draft the power forward on Wednesday night. Advertisement 'We are all excited to have you here, man. I'm telling you, having a Bulldog, this is big for us,' Hawks owner Tony Ressler told Newell in a call from the draft room. 'Yes sir. Thank you for keeping me in state. I really appreciate the opportunity and it's just a blessing. I just can't wait to get up there,' Newell said. Newell received several collegiate offers, but decided to return to Athens and play for UGA head coach Mike White. Newell made the SEC All-Freshman team, averaging 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Advertisement 'Asa is unbelievable. With where the league is going, people with size and athleticism like that just make sense,' Hawks General Manager Onsi Saleh said in a statement Wednesday night. 'He's a great screener, a great human being, a ridiculous athlete, and a really smart player too. He is an unbelievable competitor and does things that impact winning.' RUMOR: Hawks' Trae Young trade rumblings put to bed

The post RUMOR: Hawks' Trae Young trade rumblings put to bed appeared first on ClutchPoints. There are two indisputable statements the Atlanta Hawks must sort out this offseason: Trae Young is a stellar offensive talent, and this franchise has not advanced past the opening round of the NBA playoffs since the 2020-21 campaign. Is it possible this marriage has plateaued? Many have wondered if management would attempt to alter the team's identity and trajectory by making a major shake-up. Advertisement Atlanta's actions indicate otherwise, however. New general manager Onsi Saleh does not appear to be engaged in Young trade talks at this time, as he instead focuses on the No. 13 and No. 22 selections the Hawks have at their disposal going into the 2025 NBA Draft. 'While some have suggested Atlanta should leverage these selections and try to move into the top 10, the Hawks appear to be comfortable adding two more young talents to build the future of their roster,' ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel reports. 'Despite changes in their front office, the Hawks have not held serious Trae Young trade discussions, sources said.' Can Young lead the Hawks back into relevance? When taking into account the current squad, which contains rising talents like Jalen Johnson, Zaccharie Risacher and Dyson Daniels, one can see why the organization would want to keep Young. If Atlanta is indeed retaining the face of the franchise through this offseason, then head coach Quin Snyder must figure out how to maximize the team's collective strengths. Advertisement Trae Young is a four-time All-Star and one of the top playmakers in the league today. He will undoubtedly produce on the floor, as evidenced by the 24.2 points, league-leading 11.6 assists and 1.2 steals he averaged last season. The 26-year-old comes with efficiency questions, however. He shot a paltry 41.1 percent from the field and posted an NBA-worst 355 turnovers. A player that has the ball in his hands as much as Young must exhibit more consistency. He has proven himself capable of doing just that in the past, leading the Hawks to an unforeseen Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 2021. Considering Atlanta's ostensible faith in him moving forward, he will get the opportunity to recapture that peak form in the 2025-26 season. Hawks GM Saleh names former Pelicans GM Graham as vice president of basketball operations

ATLANTA — Atlanta Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh has bolstered his front office staff by naming former New Orleans Pelicans general manager Bryson Graham as senior vice president of basketball operations. Saleh on Wednesday also named former Philadelphia 76ers executive vice president Peter Dinwiddie as senior vice president of strategy and analytics. Saleh was named general manager on April 21 after Landry Fields was fired. The front office overhaul came after the Hawks finished 40-42 this season and missed the playoffs after going 0-2 in the play-in tournament. 'We are fortunate to be able to add Bryson and Peter to our leadership team,' Saleh said in a statement released by the Hawks. 'Bryson is widely regarded as one of the league's top young talent evaluators and Peter is one of the most strategic minds in the NBA. 'Ownership has empowered me to build a robust and dynamic front office, and adding two extremely talented, experienced and respected executives in Bryson and Peter is a home run for our group.' Graham spent 15 seasons with the Pelicans, including the 2024-25 season as general manager. He rose through the team's front office after being hired as an intern in the 2010-11 season and then served as player development director, director of college scouting and assistant general manager, among other positions. Before serving as the 76ers vice president of basketball operations, Dinwiddie spent 14 seasons with the Indiana Pacers, including as the senior vice president of basketball operations. The Hawks have two first-round picks in the NBA draft on June 25, at No. 13 and No. 22. ___ AP NBA:
