Create Account OPP officers say they responded to a marine call on Balsam Lake – near Cobokonk – around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday and they were notified that a man in a canoe had gone overboard and failed to resurface. 'The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, including members of the Marine Unit and the Emergency Response Unit, patrolled the water extensively but were unable to locate the individual before nightfall,' the OPP said in a statement. Police said Underwater Search and Recovery Unit officers 'aided in recovery measures' when the search resumed Wednesday and the senior citizen's body was located around 1:30 p.m. 'The investigation is currently ongoing,' the OPP said. Northern Ont. traffic stop leads to 3 arrests, 65 charges, thousands in cash, drugs seized

Ontario Provincial Police seized a handgun, a taser and a knife along with quanities of suspected fentanyl, cocaine and psilocybin and approximately $7,200 in cash during a traffic stop on Highway 11 in Sheguiandah, Ont., on July 23, 2025. (Supplied/Ontario Provincial Police) Three individuals are facing numerous weapons and drug-related charges after Ontario Provincial Police seized a handgun, a taser and suspected narcotics during a traffic stop in Sheguiandah last week. At about 8 p.m. on July 23, officers observed a vehicle swerving onto the shoulder of Highway 6 and struggling to maintain a consistent speed. Police conducted a traffic stop, leading to all three occupants of the vehicle being taken into custody. More than $17,500 in cash, drugs seized During the investigation, authorities confiscated a handgun, a taser, a knife, suspected fentanyl valued at approximately $5,600, suspected cocaine worth an estimated $4,800, an amount of suspected psilocybin and approximately $7,200 in cash. 65 charges laid As a result, all three are charged with unauthorized possession of a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, four counts of careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, five other firearm or weapon-related offences and three counts of drug trafficking. The driver, a 29-year-old man from Ojibways of Sucker Creek First Nation, was additionally charged with failure to comply with a release order, possession of a prohibited device for a dangerous purpose and possession of prohibited ammunition for a dangerous purpose. One passenger, a 41-year-old man from Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Township, faces further charges, including three counts of failure to comply with a release order, an allegation of breaching a conditional sentence, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three other firearm or weapon related offences. The other passenger, a 43-year-old woman from Sudbury was also charged with two counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition for a dangerous purpose and another weapon-related offence. All three accused remain in custody with their next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 1. 'If you have knowledge of criminal activity, take action confidentially by contacting Crime Stoppers.'

Ontario Provincial Police say the driver of this vehicle was observed going 186 km/h on Highway 401 near Lansdowne on Tuesday. (OPP/X) A Toronto-area driver is facing a stunt driving charge and four people in the vehicle had to call a taxi for the rest of their trip, after being stopped speeding on Highway 401 in eastern Ontario. Ontario Provincial Police say officers responded to reports of two vehicles racing in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 Tuesday morning. 'An officer with the Leeds OPP spotted the cars in the Lansdowne area just before 9 a.m. today and stopped one,' the OPP said on X. 'The other refused to stop and officers continued to look for it.' Police say the driver stopped was clocked going 186 km/h by an officer. The driver is facing a charge of stunt driving, which includes a 30-day licence suspension and the vehicle impounded for 14 days. 'The four occupants were placed in a taxi and sent on their way,' police said.

Ontario Provincial Police say a man from New York has been charged with careless driving following a seven-vehicle crash on the QEW in St. Catharines. (OPP/ X) A driver from New York state is facing charges in connection with a seven-vehicle crash on the QEW in St. Catharines on Monday morning, Ontario Provincial Police say. Police said the collision occurred in the Toronto-bound lanes of the highway near Welland Avenue. Two tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, along with five other vehicles, police said. Two people were transported to hospital for treatment, including one with serious injuries. The OPP said a 60-year-old man from West Seneca, New York has been charged with one count of careless driving.
