Unclean public toilets upset Trichy's gains

Trichy: Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, the national cleanliness ranking done by the Union govt, has placed Trichy in 49th spot among 95 cities participating in the 'big cities' category (population of 3-10 lakh). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While Trichy retained the state's cleanest city tag in the category by scoring 8,239 marks, the overall state-level rank based on scores has slipped from '1' in the previous survey to '2' now. Coimbatore, which participated in the million plus population category, secured 8,347 marks and climbed to the top spot. Low scores in cleanliness of public toilets and source segregation of waste were blamed for Trichy's slide. Out of a total 12,500 marks, the survey earmarked 10,000 marks for 10 sections and 54 indicators including visible cleanliness, segregation and transportation of waste, access to sanitation, and citizen feedback. While Trichy scored full marks in remediation of dump sites, cleanliness of residential areas, cleanliness of market areas, and cleanliness of water bodies, the city did not score any marks in cleanliness of public toilets and only 14% marks in source segregation. Door-to-door waste collection has earned 70% marks for the city, despite the civic body outsourcing waste management. Despite scoring high marks in categories such as waste processing where several other participant cities scored low, nil mark secured by Trichy in upkeep of public toilets has helped other cities steal a march over it. Thus far, Trichy remained undisputed leader as state's cleanest city irrespective of the category. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Meanwhile, in the certification category for which 2,500 marks were assigned, Trichy secured ODF++ (Open Defecation Free) certification. This means that all community toilets are functioning and well-maintained, and sewage is not dumped in open drains. In Garbage Free City (GFC) category, which assesses cities for construction and demolition (C&D) waste management, no major TN cities including Trichy and Coimbatore scored marks out of 1,300 marks. Trichy corporation officials have expressed shock at the scores awarded in maintenance of public toilets. The city has around 400 public and community toilets maintained by SHGs. They wondered how the city could get zero in cleanliness of public toilets after being certified as ODF++. "We registered our disappointment for the scores in maintenance of public toilets and sought re-evaluation. Perhaps data could have been wrongly uploaded, we are awaiting a positive response," an official source said.

Hyderabad sixth cleanest city, bags 7-star garbage-free tag

HYDERABAD: The city has made significant strides in cleanliness, climbing from ninth to sixth place among 44 cities with a population of over a million in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings, released under the . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The city also earned the prestigious 7-star garbage-free certification. At the national level, Hyderabad ranks just behind Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Lucknow, Raipur, and Jabalpur, marking its best-ever performance since the formation of Telangana. In previous years, the city's ranking hovered between 26 and 35, making this a significant leap forward. According to the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), Hyderabad scored 11,805 out of 12,500 points across three key areas — Swachh Survekshan assessment (phases I-IV), ODF (Open Defecation Free) and water plus status, and star rating for garbage-free cities. The city was also recognised as the 'Promising Swachh Shehar of the state'. A few months ago, the GHMC applied for the 7-star garbage-free city certification and water plus recertification as part of its push to boost rankings in this year's Swachh Survekshan. Speaking at the award ceremony on Thursday, where Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar presented the recognition, GHMC commissioner RV Karnan said, 'In the coming days, we will focus on strengthening door-to-door collection. This achievement is the result of consistent efforts by citizens and staff. We have progressed from last year's 5-star rating and 9th rank to 7-star and 6th place — a sign of improvement.' SCB recognised cleanest among 58 cantonments The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has been recognised as the cleanest among 58 cantonments in the country for its efforts in solid waste management and the implementation of innovative best practices under Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The SCB secured 11th position in medium cities category (50,0003 lakh population) at the national level, and ranked second within the state after Greater Hyderabad. Additionally, it received a three-star certification for being a garbage-free city and earned water++ status in the ODF classification. Under solid waste management, SCB initiated doorto-door garbage collection in all wards with 95 GPS-enabled garbage collection vehicles for daily monitoring and tracking of waste collection. As part of Swachh Survekshan, the board revived Ramannakunta Lake through desilting, garbage removal, and inlet purification and planted over 15,000 saplings in the past two years across public spaces, parks, lake fronts, and school campuses. Officials said the award highlights dedication to building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment for its residents and sanitation workforce alike.

Nagpur Ranks 27th Among Million-Plus 44 Cities In Swachh Survekshan 2024

Nagpur: The Swachh Survekshan 2024 results, announced by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, placed Nagpur at the 27th position among 44 cities in the million-plus population category. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The ranking, while a step up from last year, highlights a concerning stagnation in the city's overall cleanliness performance and sanitation standards. While Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada secured top ranks under the Swachh Survekshan League (SSL) for consistent performance throughout the year, Nagpur finished well behind with a total score of 9,328 out of 12,500. The city scored 8,128 marks in the core Swachh Survekshan assessment (maximum 10,000) and 1,200 marks under the certification parameters such as Open Defecation Free (ODF) and Garbage Free City (GFC), which carry a combined maximum of 2,500 marks. Nagpur continues to trail behind several peer cities at both national and state levels. Cities like Ahmedabad (ranked 1), Bhopal (2), Lucknow (3) and Raipur (4) outperformed Nagpur in key sanitation metrics. Within Maharashtra, Pimpri Chinchwad (7), Pune (8), Thane (15), Nashik (22), and Kalyan-Dombivli (24) all achieved higher ranks, indicating that Nagpur has more ground to cover to reclaim a leading position in urban sanitation. Despite several initiatives taken by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the city once again failed to secure any star rating under the GFC category. This marks the second consecutive year without a GFC star, pointing to shortcomings in areas like citizen participation in waste segregation at source and door-to-door collection of waste. Nagpur retained its Water+ certification under the ODF category, which is awarded for initiatives such as reuse of treated sewage and adequate coverage of public toilets. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The NMC applied for the higher Water++ certification this year, but the city fell short of meeting the necessary benchmarks. At the national level, Nagpur was ranked 27th out of 44 million-plus cities. Within Maharashtra, it stood below five other major municipal corporations, a disappointing position for a city often referred to as the state's second capital. In the Swachh Survekshan 2023, Nagpur was placed 86th among over 400 cities with a population above one lakh. The NMC objected to this categorisation, insisting that Nagpur should have been evaluated in the million-plus category. Despite having engaged two private agencies for door-to-door waste collection and deploying around 7,000 sanitary workers, NMC continues to face challenges in maintaining cleanliness across the city. Overflowing garbage bins, irregular collection, and lack of strict enforcement remain unresolved issues. While earlier surveys acknowledged Nagpur's near-complete door-to-door collection coverage and high levels of source segregation, the city's failure to tackle problems like illegal dumping, incomplete waste processing, and poor monitoring has hurt its overall ranking. Reacting to this year's ranking, additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant said the improvement from last year's 86th position was largely due to progress in processing infrastructure. "We've made tremendous progress, especially in the processing of waste," she told TOI. She cited the operational scaling of the SusBDe plant, which is now processing nearly 800 metric tonnes of waste daily, as a key contributor. Pant also pointed to the bio-mining of legacy waste, with nearly 6.5 lakh metric tonnes already processed. "Earlier, this was one of our weakest areas, but now it's turning into our strength," she added. Pant also noted that the city now has a functional construction and demolition waste plant handling around 150 metric tonnes per day. "These processing units, developed over the past one to one-and-a-half years, have directly contributed to our rise in the national rankings," she said. Kaustav Chatterjee, brand ambassador (Nagpur) for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, said the city improved in terms of scoring percentage. "Last year, Nagpur scored 6,164 out of 9,500, which is around 64.8%. This year, it scored 9,328 out of 12,500, pushing the score percentage up to 74.6," he said. However, he raised serious concerns about scoring inconsistencies. "Surprisingly, Nagpur received only 1% under source segregation and 30% under door-to-door collection, which is questionable given the city's actual performance. The NMC should challenge such scores," he said. Coimbatore city improves its cleanliness ranking from 35 to 28

1 2 Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has been ranked 28 out of 44 cities in the cleanliness survey (Swachh Survekshan 2025) under the category of cities with population of more than 10 lakh. The cleanliness ranking was released on Thursday by the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA). Coimbatore has shown significant improvement in rankings. It stood at 35th place in 2023 and 46th place in 2022. In Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore has maintained its top position for the third consecutive year while Chennai and Madurai have been ranked 38 and 40, respectively. The survey was conducted for the financial year 2024-25 based on various sanitation indicators. Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai have topped the ranking list for the second consecutive year. According to the survey results, under eight major indicators, the city has achieved 100% cleanliness in residential areas, market areas, and water bodies. However, in door-to-door collection and source segregation, the city has achieved only 40% and 25%, respectively. For waste generation versus processing, the corporation has achieved only 32%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You. The city has also been upgraded to Open Defecation Free (ODF) ++ certification. Commenting on areas for improvement, a senior corporation officer said, "These results are based on random samples. The door-to-door collection has been effectively implemented. However, source segregation needs more attention and awareness among people. Advanced processing facilities require at least 80% segregated waste, which remains a challenge when people are hesitant to follow the guidelines." Meanwhile, Namakkal has been awarded the title 'Promising Swachh Shehar' of Tamil Nadu.
