Professor Uma Kanjilal becomes Ignou's first woman Vice Chancellor
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has appointed Professor Uma Kanjilal as its new Vice Chancellor, making her the first woman to hold the top post since the university's founding in appointment marks a significant milestone for IGNOU, one of the largest open universities in the world. Uma Kanjilal has been appointed the first woman Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), four decades after the university was established, according to education ministry officials. Prof Uma Kanjilal is currently the National Coordinator for SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA, the flagship digital education initiatives of the Ministry of Education.(File) "With over 36 years of distinguished service in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system, Kanjilal brings a wealth of academic leadership, digital innovation, and institutional knowledge to the helm of one of the world's largest open universities," an official said. "She was currently serving as active Vice Chancellor of the university and has previously served as Pro Vice Chancellor of the university (March 2021-July 2024)," the official said. A professor of Library and Information Science since 2003, Kanjilal is nationally recognised for her expertise in e-learning, ICT in libraries, digital libraries, and multimedia courseware development. She is currently the National Coordinator for SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA, the flagship digital education initiatives of the Ministry of Education. Kanjilal has held various leadership roles at the university including Director, Centre for Online Education (2019–2021); Director, Inter-University Consortium for Technology Enabled Flexible Education (2016–2019); Director, Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning (2012–2013); Director, School of Social Sciences (2007–2010); and University Librarian (2004–2006).

IGNOU Launches BA Home Science under FYUP for July session
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a BA course in home science under FYUP. The course will be hosted by the School of Continuing Education in the Open and Distance Learning System from the July 2025 session. Students interested should have completed their schooling till Class 12th. The medium of instruction of the course is English and Hindi. The course duration is for three years and a maximum of six years. For registration, students have to visit, The programme, as mentioned in the press release, is designed in line with the curriculum and credit framework of the University Grants Commission and the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to meet the demand for specialisation in diverse disciplines within Home Science / Community Science. The examination will be conducted annually. The fee structure of the course is Rs 5000 per year, which is inclusive of registration fees and development fees as applicable. The programme aims to empower students with a comprehensive understanding of Human Development and Family Studies, Community Resource Management, Food and Nutrition, Extension and Communication and Fabric and Apparel Sciences. This programme is multidisciplinary in approach and flexible through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, preparing students for diverse careers while encouraging inclusivity and community engagement. After 1st Year: Undergraduate Certificate in Home Science. After 2nd Year: Undergraduate Diploma in Home Science. After 3rd Year: B.A. (Home Science). After 4th Year: B.A. (Hons) Home Science. The programme integrates theory with practical application, providing skill-based learning aligned with contemporary social needs and employability, mentions the press release. There are 120 credits in the course, with both print and digital medium available for books.
