'People don't want to leave their house': New crackdown on summertime anti-social behaviour
A charity says some people are too scared to step outside because of fears over anti-social behaviour. Cumbria Police are partnering with community groups to launch a Safe Streets Summer project, which hopes to combat the issue by keeping young people engaged with activities throughout the summer holidays and by ramping up enforcement. Harley Day, a Remedi Community Engagement Officer, said: "Some people don't even want to leave their house. It can be very scary, especially when they live on their own and they're older; it has a massive effect. "It could just be that youths are just knocking on their door, but we don't know what they've been through in the past. You know, people have quite traumatic stress." Police say there's been a decline in the number of anti-social behaviour incidents in Cumbria, with 985 fewer reports in the year leading up to March. David Allen, Cumbria's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, said: "For me, coming back into Cumbria and the policing sphere, it broke my heart to see that we withdrew from the public that we serve. "We're now turning that dial back, providing visible policing and neighbourhood police officers who know the patch." Cumbria Youth Alliance says there is a lack of facilities for young people across the county - but it's not the whole picture. Chief Operating Officer Sophie Birkett, from Cumbria Youth Alliance, said: "There were around 586 different youth services around Cumberland, not all youth groups, but something offering something for young people, for them to do. So I don't think it's a lack of provision. I think it's a lack of awareness." This summer initiative follows the launch of Operation Enhance in July 2024, in which the force pledged to carry out extra patrols in 18 hotspot areas, including Carlisle, Workington, Maryport, Cleator Moor, Whitehaven, Penrith and Kendal. Lauren Woodward, from Cumbria's Fire and Rescue team, said: "It's quite rare in Cumbria, but one is too many, so we just ask people to be mindful and share messages with their children about the impact it can have on us if you hurt one of our firefighters, they're not able to do their job."

Further arrests made by police officers as part of Operation Enhance
LAST month more action has been taken as part of Operation Enhance. More arrests and further action have been taken as part of the operation. It aims to tackle antisocial behaviour and violence within Cumbrian communities. In a post on social media, Cumbria Police wrote: "Last month (January) saw more positive work from Operation Enhance officers. "In January alone, the operation saw 17 stop and searches, 55 intel submissions from the public, and four arrests. "The work is contributing to a reduction of more than 36 percent in ASB across the 18 hotspot areas. "Op Enhance sees extra police patrols in areas identified as hotspots for anti-social behaviour and/or serious violence across the county. "The operation has been made possible thanks to £1 million of extra funding secured by Cumbria's police, fire and crime commissioner from the Government's Hotspot Response Fund to target anti-social behaviour (ASB) and serious violence in hotspot areas across the county. "The operation puts extra patrols in 18 areas identified by statistical analysis as the county's hotspot areas of anti-social behaviour and serious violence."

Person arrested during police operation in Penrith town centre
A person in Penrith was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis, and drug driving during a police operation. Officers from the Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) were out in Penrith town centre on Friday evening, February 14, alongside Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and the DVSA, as part of an operation to educate drivers and target anti-social driving. As part of the operation, officers and partners were stopping drivers passing through the town centre to conduct vehicle checks. Any drivers found to be committing any driving offences were given prohibition notices by Driving Standards and were given advice around safe driving. Officers carried out patrols in areas in the town identified as hotspots for anti-social driving. No further issues were identified; however, officers will continue to patrol hotspot areas for anti-social driving activity as part of Operation Enhance and will be out on Penrith's streets to identify any suspects who continue to commit anti-social driving offences. Sergeant Phil Hall, Eden NPT, said: "This operation was all about educating drivers around the risks of not maintaining their vehicles. "During the night, four prohibition notices were handed out to drivers for issues with their tyres, exhausts and airbags. "It is a driver's responsibility to make sure their vehicles are safe and legal to drive." Sgt Hall continued: "Residents in Penrith have reported concerns regarding the dangers that nuisance drivers pose to other road users and pedestrians. "Our officers remain vigilant, and anyone caught committing these offences will be challenged and could face arrest or having their vehicle seized." David Allen, Cumbria's police, fire and crime commissioner, said: "It's vital that we keep our vehicles maintained so that we can keep not only ourselves safe but also other road users and pedestrians safe. "Partnership working is necessary to continually improve the safety of our county so I'm incredibly pleased to see Police, Fire and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency work together to stop vehicles in Penrith and check that they are suitable for the road. "I was also pleased to see that we were able to stop someone driving under the influence of drugs - Cumbria Constabulary has a zero-tolerance policy against driving under the influence and these pro-active stops clearly highlight that if you drive under the influence of drugs, alcohol or any other illegal substance, you will be caught. "I would urge all drivers in Cumbria to check their vehicles to ensure that they are road safe – if you are unsure, most garages will provide a check for you as part of a service. "It is a community effort to keep our county safe so let's work together and protect Cumbria's roads."
