Rapist who attacked woman at picnic becomes 43rd Rotherham abuser to be convicted as he is jailed for more than six years

A rapist who attacked a woman at a picnic has become the 43rd Rotherham abuser to be convicted as he is jailed for over six years. Amer Khan, 42, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, met his victim in 2002 when they were both in their early 20s. About a year later, he became verbally and physically abusive, with the woman telling National Crime Agency (NCA) officers how he would pinch, slap and punch her. Khan's violence reached depraved new heights as he brutally raped her after she tried to run away when he attempted to pressure her into having sex during a picnic. The woman, who has not been named for legal reasons, recalled crying during the attack as twisted Khan blamed her for his own vile actions. Officers from Operation Stovewood - the NCA's enquiry into historic sexual abuse allegations in Rotherham - launched an investigation in 2022 after identifying the woman as a victim of rape during separate enquiries. Khan was charged in February 2024, and was yesterday found guilty of one count of rape at Sheffield Crown Court. The judge then immediately handed him a six and a half year prison sentence for the crime he committed over 20 years ago. When he is released from prison, Khan will have to sign the sex offenders' register. Senior investigator Kath Blain, from the NCA's Operation Stovewood, said: 'When the victim first met Khan he showed no signs of being violent, however after gaining the woman's trust Khan became abusive and that behaviour quickly escalated to sexual violence. 'Specially-trained National Crime Agency investigators listened to the victim's account and sought corroborating evidence. 'Our evidence and the victim's brave testimony has resulted in Khan being convicted more than twenty years after he committed his crime. 'I urge anyone who has been raped or sexual abused, at any time in their life, to report it to the police, who are ready and waiting to help.
