MMEA seizes tanker carrying diesel illegally

SHAH ALAM: A vessel with seven Indonesian crew has been seized for possessing, storing and transporting over 60,000 litres of diesel without a special licence. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Selangor director Maritime Kapt Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the vessel was detained on Thursday afternoon during a patrol under Ops Ehsan, Ops Murni and Ops Tiris 3.0, about one nautical mile west of Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang. He said the captain and six crew members held valid identification documents. 'A search found an estimated 62,000 litres of diesel on board. The captain failed to produce any documentation authorising possession of the controlled item. 'A detention order was issued for the vessel with the captain and second engineer taken to the marine police jetty in Pulau Indah,' he said yesterday, Bernama reported. The case is being probed under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for failure to produce a valid permit from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to possess and transport controlled goods.

Bintulu Maritime Zone director, Maritime Captain Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah, said the tugboat was stopped around 2pm, approximately 0.38 nautical miles southwest of Batu Kura-Kura off of here. The enforcement was part of Ops Tiris 3.0 and Ops Permai. Initial checks found eight Indonesian crew members on board, aged between 23 and 48, including the captain. 'The vessel is suspected of violating Section 22(2A) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for failing to notify the Registrar of Ships in writing about a change of captain, as required under the ship's registration certificate,' Muhammad Suffian said in a statement. The offence carries a RM2,500 fine. The tugboat and crew were escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre for further investigation. Selangor MMEA seizes tanker carrying 62,000 litres of diesel without permit

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized a tanker for possessing, storing and transporting over 60,000 litres of diesel without a valid permit or special licence in state waters. Its director Maritime Capt Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the vessel was detained at about 1.30pm on Thursday (July 3) during a routine patrol under Ops Ehsan, Ops Murni and Ops Tiris 3.0. The seizure was made approximately one nautical mile (1.85km) west of Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang. He said initial inspections found that the vessel was manned by a 43-year-old captain with six crew members aged between 21 and 51, all Indonesian nationals with valid identification documents. "A search of the vessel found an estimated 62,000 litres of diesel on board, and the captain failed to produce any documentation authorising possession of the controlled item. "A detention order was issued for the vessel. The captain and the second engineer were taken to the Marine Police Jetty in Pulau Indah for further investigation,' he said in a statement on Friday (July 4). Two vessels detained for fishing too close to shore in Sabah waters

Maritime officers detain an anchovy purse seine vessel operating too close to shore in the waters off Tabawan, Kunak. KOTA KINABALU: Two fishing vessels were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for breaching licence conditions by operating too close to shore in the waters off Tabawan, Kunak. The vessels, using the purse seine method where a large wall of netting surrounds schools of fish, were stopped separately during patrols under Ops Pluto Timur 2/2023 and Ops Tiris 3.0 at about 11.30am, yesterday, some 0.37 nautical miles east of Madai, said Lahad Datu Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali in a statement. Initial inspections on the first vessel found four crew members onboard — two Malaysians aged 31 and 39, and two Filipinos aged 28 and 65 — along with five kilogrammes of anchovy catch. The second vessel was manned by two Malaysians aged 21 and 23, and two Filipinos aged 15 and 22, with a four-kilogramme catch. All eight individuals were found with valid identification documents. Further checks revealed both vessels had operated within 1.5 nautical miles of the nearest shoreline, a direct violation of the Fisheries Act 1985 for failing to comply with their licence conditions. 'Firm action will be taken against any fishing boat operators who disregard licence terms, especially those found fishing in restricted zones,' Dzulfikhar said. The vessels, crew and catch were brought to the Lahad Datu Maritime jetty for further investigation. On June 5, a similar case was reported near Kota Kinabalu when a local fishing vessel was caught operating just one nautical mile off Tanjung Tembungo. That case involved an Indonesian crew and nearly one tonne of fish, also seized for breaching nearshore fishing restrictions. Under the Fisheries Act 1985, purse seine fishing vessels must operate at least 1.5 nautical miles from shore to safeguard marine ecosystems and ensure the sustainability of Malaysia's fishery resources. The MMEA is urging the maritime community to comply with maritime laws and report any suspicious activities via WhatsApp at 016-9305727 or the MERS 999 emergency line.

Terengganu KPDN seizes over 15,000 litres of diesel in Merang

BANDAR PERMAISURI: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Terengganu branch seized 15,455 litres of diesel, valued at RM44,819.50, during an operation at a construction site in Merang near here yesterday. Its director Mohd Mufsi Lat said the seizure was made during an Ops Tiris 3.0 raid involving four KPDN enforcement officers at around 10 am. 'The raid was the result of two weeks of intelligence gathering. During the inspection, our team discovered a storage tank (skid tank) containing approximately 15,455 litres of diesel, believed to be intended for use with a generator set,' he said in a statement today. He said further inspection revealed that the company involved had failed to produce any permit or letter of authorisation from the Supply Controller to store diesel at the site. Mohd Mufsi added that an investigation paper has been opened, and the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. 'KPDN will also take action against the supplier that provided the diesel to the company, under the same law. 'We would like to issue a stern warning to all relevant parties that the ministry will not hesitate to take firm action against any individual or entity found to be misappropriating controlled goods,' he said.
