Won't contest in polls, says Union minister Oram
Bhubaneswar: Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram on Saturday said he is not going to contest in future elections but would be willing to serve in other capacities such as a Rajya Sabha member or as a governor. I will continue working for the party, but I feel it's time to make way for younger candidates." In 2014, he was the lone BJP Lok Sabha member elected from Odisha. Before entering politics, Oram worked as an assistant foreman at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Born into a poor tribal family in Kendudihi village, Sundargarh district, he rose through the ranks to become one of India's prominent tribal leaders. During his tenure, Oram was instrumental in implementing various programmes for tribal welfare and served as the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence from 2019 to 2024. Amid speculation about the timing of his announcement, Oram, however, left the door open for his involvement in electoral politics. "These are my personal opinions. If the party asks me to contest again, I will comply," Oram said.

Not interested in direct elections anymore: Union Minister Jual Oram
SAMBALPUR: Veteran BJP leader and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram on Saturday announced he would no longer contest direct elections. The younger generation, he said, should be given more opportunities in Odisha's political landscape. Interacting with the media following his visit to the Rozgar Mela in Sambalpur, Oram said he may be chosen as Governor or nominated to Rajya Sabha but will not take part in direct elections anymore. "I have contested elections 10 times during my career - eight times as MP and twice as MLA. I am not willing to contest direct elections anymore," he said. However, he clarified that he is not considering formal retirement from politics. "I may be sent to the Rajya Sabha or appointed as a Governor by the party. In any case, I will continue serving my party," he added.

Want to take break from contesting elections says Union minister Jual Oram
Odisha's veteran tribal leader and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram on Saturday said that he wants to take a break from contesting elections to pave the way for the young generation. The minister said that he would not run for either MP or MLA positions in the future. Man's body recovered from Sundargarh pond
Rourkela: The body of a man with his hands and legs tied was recovered from a pond in an area under Sadar police station limits in Sundargarh district on Wednesday. Mahato Oram (58) was residing with his family at Baurimunda village. On the day of Rath Yatra (June 27), Oram left his home around 4 pm to visit another house where a widow and her three sons live. However, he did not return home that night. His family members searched for him at various places but could not locate him. On June 30, Oram's family lodged an FIR at Sadar police station reporting him missing. Police registered a case and began an investigation. On Wednesday, Oram's body was found floating in a pond in the village. Sadar police were informed, and officials recovered the body. A scientific team also reached the spot and conducted an examination. Rabi Oram, son of the deceased Mahato Oram, has lodged an FIR alleging that his father was murdered. "A murder case has been registered. We suspect the man was murdered and are investigating the case in detail," said Nirmal Mohapatra, SDPO, Sadar, Sundargarh. "The post-mortem report will also reveal the cause of his death," he added.

City AIIMS to get CoE status for research on sickle cell anaemia
1 2 Bhubaneswar: AIIMS Bhubaneswar is set to be accorded the status of Centre of Excellence (CoE) for management and research of sickle cell disease (SCD), announced Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram during the World Sickle Cell Awareness Day celebration at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Thursday. "The Centre of Excellence tag will further strengthen AIIMS Bhubaneswar's capabilities in advanced research and quality treatment in sickle cell disease," said Oram. He said the govt is committed to eradicating sickle cell anaemia by 2047. "So far, 5.79 crore people were screened across the country. Among them, 5.55 crore tested negative, 16.38 lakh were identified as carriers, and 2.1 lakh were diagnosed with the disease," he added. AIIMS Bhubaneswar currently treats more than 700 registered SCD patients, over 500 of whom are in the 0 to 19 age group. "The institute offers regular diagnostic services, treatment, and carrier screening, including for extended family members of affected persons," said AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Dr Ashutosh Biswas. He said the institute also provides pre-natal diagnostic services to detect conditions like Down syndrome, neural tube defects, thalassaemia, and sickle cell anaemia within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. "If both parents are carriers, there is a 25 per cent chance that the child may be affected," he added. During this visit, Oram toured various facilities of the institute and interacted with SCD patients and their family members. He also participated in a review meeting and a scientific session focused on sickle cell disease. "Facilities at AIIMS Bhubaneswar also include exchange transfusion for patients experiencing stroke or undergoing major surgeries. Furthermore, newborn screening for genetic metabolic disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia is actively being carried out," said the national institute in an official statement.
