Trinidad and Tobago present its highest honour to PM Modi
Trinidad and Tobago on Friday presented its highest honour to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recognition of his role in strengthening bilateral ties. (@MEAIndia/via PTI) The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was presented to Modi at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo, who are both of Indian-origin. Modi described the honour as a symbol of the 'eternal and deep friendship' between the two countries, and said he accepted it on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians. 'The conferment of this honour for the first time on a foreign leader reflects the depth of our special relations,' he said. 'One hundred and eighty years ago, those who came here from India laid the foundation of our friendship. Even though their hands were empty, their minds were rich in Indian civilisation, culture and diversity,' he added. Modi also described Persad-Bissessar and Kangaloo as the biggest brand ambassadors of the Indian community. He noted that Kangaloo's ancestors were from Tamil Nadu, the land of Saint Thiruvalluvar. He also said cooperation between the two countries is important for the entire Global South. 'As two vibrant democracies, we will continue to work together for the welfare of the people of both countries as well as the entire humanity,' he said. Modi has received state honours from more than 20 countries, including Saudi Arabia's Order of King Abdul Aziz, the Order of the State of Palestine, the UAE's Order of Zayed, the Order of Fiji, and Egypt's Order of the Nile.

PM Modi sets record with most foreign honours for an Indian PM after receiving Cyprus's top honour
NEW DELHI: With the prestigious Cypriot national award, the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III', conferred upon him, Narendra Modi has become the first Prime Minister of India to receive the highest number of international honours and awards while in office. According to available records, Prime Minister Modi has been honoured with 28 of the highest state awards from foreign nations between 2016 and 2025, in recognition of his visionary leadership. Since India's Independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first Prime Minister, received two international honours, while Indira Gandhi was similarly awarded two. Dr Manmohan Singh also received two international honours during his tenure as Prime Minister, whereas Rajiv Gandhi did not receive any. Saudi Arabia conferred the 'Order of King Abdulaziz' upon him in 2016, while Afghanistan awarded him the 'Order of Amanullah Khan' international honour in the same year. The list of international accolades bestowed upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to grow each year. Notably, he received the 'Order of the State of Palestine' in 2018, followed by the 'Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin' from the Maldives in 2019. That same year, Bahrain honoured him with the 'King Hamad Order of the Renaissance' in Bahrain. In 2023, Prime Minister Modi was awarded the 'Order of the Nile' by Egypt, and France conferred upon him its highest civilian distinction, the 'Légion d'Honneur'. The year 2023 saw him receiving a total of three international honours, which was surpassed in 2024 when he received six such awards. So far in 2025, the Prime Minister has been conferred with three international honours.

Cyprus presents one of its highest civilian honours to PM Modi
Cyprus on Monday awarded the Order of Makarios III, one of the country's highest civilian honours, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described the award as a symbol of peace, security, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cypriot President Nikos Christodulides conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the second highest of six grades of the award, on Modi at an official ceremony on the second day of his visit to the Mediterranean country. Modi dedicated the award to the friendship between the two countries. 'I dedicate this award to friendly ties, shared values and mutual understanding between India and Cyprus,' he said, speaking in Hindi. 'This award is a symbol of peace, security, sovereignty and territorial integrity and our unbreakable commitment to our peoples' prosperity.' Modi said he believed the active partnership between India and Cyprus will touch new heights in the coming days. 'We will not only jointly strengthen the progress of our countries but will work together to build a peaceful and secure global environment,' he said. He said the award is an honour for 1.4 billion Indians and their aspirations, and thanked Christodulides and the government and people of Cyprus. External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a social media post: 'The honour reflects the enduring India-Cyprus bilateral partnership and shared commitment to work together for the common vision for peace, progress and prosperity.' Notable recipients of the Order of Makarios III, named after the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, include former president Pranab Mukherjee, King Abdullah II of Jordan, former German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. Modi has received state honours from close to 20 countries, including Saudi Arabia's Order of King Abdul Aziz, the Order of the State of Palestine, the UAE's Order of Zayed, the Order of Fiji, and Egypt's Order of the Nile.
