Veteran politician Seiko Hashimoto elected first female president of the Japanese Olympic Committee
TOKYO (AP) — Seiko Hashimoto has been elected president of the Japanese Olympic Committee, becoming the first woman to head the body. She is a former Olympian and was elected late Thursday to replace Yasuhiro Yamashita, who served three terms. Hashimoto competed in cycling in three Summer Olympics (1988, 1992 and 1996), and in speedskating in four Winter Olympics (1984, 1988, 1992 and 1994). She won a bronze medal at the 1992 Albertville Games in speedskating. Hashimoto has served as a government minister for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and is currently a member of the upper house of the Japanese parliament. She also was appointed president of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee early in 2021. She replaced Yoshiro Mori, a former Japanese prime minister who was forced to resign as president of the committee after making sexist comments about women. Japanese media reported that she had met recently with outgoing International Olympic President Thomas Bach and had been encouraged to have Japan bid for another Olympics. 'I believe the JOC's mission is to bid again to host the Olympics and Paralympics,' she was quoted as saying by Japanese news agency Kyodo. Organizing Committee calls for mass turnout tomorrow morning to commemorate al-Wilayah
Sana'a – Saba: The Organizing Committee for events has called on the Yemeni people to gather in large numbers tomorrow morning in the designated squares of the capital Sana'a and various governorates to commemorate the Day of al-Wilayah. The committee has designated five locations in the capital for the celebrations. The Military College Square has been assigned to the districts of Bani al-Harith, al-Thawra, and Shu'ub, while Tahrir Square will host participants from the districts of al-Tahrir, Azal, and Old Sana'a city. The square north of the new university has been designated for Maeen district, while the square east of the People's Mosque will accommodate participants from the districts of al-Sabeen, al-Safiyah, and al-Wahda. 'The LGBTQ+ community doesn't let a little rain stop us from showing our Pride,' said Gary Daffin, member of the Organizing Committee for Boston Pride for the People. 'We are hoping for a rainbow by the time the parade kicks off.' And there is a chance for a sliver of sunshine to break through the thinning clouds as showers exit mid- to late Saturday. People will begin to gather along the parade route an hour or two before things kick off at 11 a.m. The parade route extends from Copley Square to the Boston Common and wraps up around 12:30 p.m. From there, multiple block parties commence.
