Saints won't be hiring ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky to their coaching staff after all

Orlovsky, former Lions QB and Kellen Moore teammate, will stay at ESPN on new contract Dan Orlovsky fueled speculation early this offseason that he might be joining his old teammate Kellen Moore on the New Orleans Saints coaching staff, but that never did come to pass. Instead, with the Saints bringing in training camp interns and last-minute pickups as assistant coaches (like Tulane Green Wave running backs coach Brock Hays), Orlovsky signed a new contract with ESPN to remain a high-profile personality with the flagship network. Orlovsky, 41, spent a dozen years in the NFL as a backup for five different teams (and two stops on the Detroit Lions, where he overlapped with Moore). He's now set to begin Year 6 of hosting NFL Live and his fourth season of appearances on Monday Night Football while making guests spots on morning shows and keystone broadcasts like Get Up, SportsCenter, First Take and The Pat McAfee Show, among other programs. The former pro quarterback has become a popular draw over at ESPN. Would he have made sense for the Saints? Maybe. But the team has plenty of former quarterbacks on their coaching staff already. Beyond Moore himself, they loaded up with veterans like offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier (who has thrown a touchdown pass or two at the Superdome) and Scott Tolzien, who worked under Moore on the Dallas Cowboys after his own seven-year pro career. Orlovsky would've fit the profile as a retired QB, but the Saints may have taken the right approach by hiring guys with experience as coaches, too.

Dan Orlovsky ‘turned into a baby' after losing Emmy to Charles Barkley

To say Dan Orlovsky was not happy is an understatement. The ESPN NFL analyst confirmed he was 'furious' after losing the 'Outstanding Personality/Studio Analyst' Sports Emmys award to Charles Barkley, believing he should have won. 'Of course I was,' Orlovsky told Sports Illustrated's Jimmy Traina after originally telling Dan Patrick he was 'furious' to have lost to the NBA Hall of Famer. Advertisement 'In analyst (category), I was like, 'Man, I really believe that I've had a strong run here. I really believe that I've separated myself.' I take pride in that. I know who I was going up against, greats of the great. So, I was like, I feel very confident about analyst. I really did.' 4 Dan Orlovsky talking with Jimmy Traina about losing to Charles Barkley. @SportsIllustrated/YouTube But alas, that confidence went for naught. Barkley, who shines for TNT's 'Inside the NBA' earned the honor over Orlovsky, who provides analysis across the ABC network of properties, including ESPN's 'NFL Live.' And he responded back with a laughing emoji face (and), 'You know it's a team effort.' So, that one bothered me.' Advertisement Orlovsky, the former Lions quarterback, said he originally did not want to attend the event fearing a potential 0-for-3, but his wife and ESPN persuaded him to attend the Los Angeles honors. 'What business do I have about losing to Charles Barkley and then texting him in the moment about losing?' Orlovsky said with a smile. Advertisement 'I'm a competitive human, I just am. Dan Orlovsky reveals how close he came to leaving ESPN after CBS flirtation

Dan Orlovsky was serious about leaving ESPN. Orlovsky said he nearly left the network before reaching a deal over the past several weeks during a recent appearance on the 'SI Media With Jimmy Traina' podcast. 'I came close to very seriously entertaining other places,' Orlovsky said. '… I've worked my absolute tail off for six or seven years now to get to that point this summer. I didn't want to make a decision 'just cause' or emotionally or in the moment. So yeah, I tried to take my time to be very conscious of it and open-minded to every element or opportunity.' Dan Orlovsky is staying with ESPN Dan Orlovsky/Instagram The network announced Wednesday that it had inked a multi-year agreement with the 'NFL Live' and 'Monday Night Football' analyst after Orlovsky hinted in February that he could leave the company this summer. 'There was a lot of really really deep conversations had with myself and my wife and our kids and other places and coaching,' the former NFL quarterback said. 'And it's not necessarily the next step for 2025 or 2026. It's what would be the next step for five years from now? Seven years from now. I worked really hard. I'm really proud to say that. It's a trademark of who I am. And I wanted to, for a lack of a better term, take advantage of that.' Orlovsky previously discussed joining CBS to be part of their Big Ten coverage, but opted against fully pursuing the opening as he waited to see ESPN's proposal. 'It wasn't going to be just a college opportunity,' Orlovsky said of the possibility of joining CBS. 'There was going to be, maybe not like that day, but in the future, whether it was a month from then, six months from then, a year from then, it was going to be an all-encompassing opportunity, and that was really enticing.' Dan Orvlosky is sticking around ESPN. Melissa Rawlins / ESPN Images Orlovsky is a rising star at the network as he enters his sixth season on 'NFL Live.' The former UConn QB spent 12 seasons in the NFL, appearing in 26 career games and started in 12 during stints with the Lions, Buccaneers, Colts and Texans.

Dan Orlovsky contract: NFL analyst agrees to long-term extension to stay at ESPN

One of ESPN's biggest NFL analysts is sticking with the company for years to come. Dan Orlovsky is in agreement on a long-term contract extension with the network, he confirmed Wednesday. Front Office Sports originally reported both sides were close. Orlovsky confirmed the deal in a tweet Wednesday. Orlovsky, 41, will continue to serve in his normal role at the network under his new deal. He'll appear on shows like "NFL Live" and "SportsCenter," and will also serve as an occasional analyst on "Monday Night Football." Advertisement Financial details of Orlovsky's new contract were not revealed. After a seven-year career as a quarterback in the NFL, Orlovsky joined ESPN in 2018. He's worked his way up at the network, becoming one of its biggest NFL voices. Over his NFL career, Orlovsky mostly served as a backup. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent his first two years in the NFL in Detroit. He also saw time with the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before returning to Detroit for his final season in 2015. In 26 NFL games — 12 of which were starts — Orlovsky finished with 15 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and a 58.2 completion percentage. Advertisement He's most well known for an on-field blunder. During his first career start in 2008, Orlovsky took a snap near his own end zone and inadvertently ran out of bounds while trying to throw a pass. The Lions were charged with a safety, and wound up losing the contest 12-10. That was the same year the Lions failed to win a single regular-season game, and finished the year 0-16.

ESPN announces "multi-year agreement" with Dan Orlovsky

He's come a long way from the time he ran the wrong way. It was reported a month ago by Andrew Marchand of It was re-reported elsewhere earlier this week. It's now official. ESPN has announced that NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky has signed a "multi-year agreement" to remain with the network. Advertisement He's a regular on NFL Live and a member of the three-person "B" team Monday Night Football booth, which will work five games in 2025. Orlovsky joined ESPN in 2018, after an NFL career that includes 26 regular-season appearances and 12 starts. Seven of them came during the Lions' 0-16 season of 2008, the first in NFL history. That was the year Orlovsky ran out of the end zone against the Vikings in Minnesota. And, to be fair and accurate, it wasn't that he accidentally stepped on the white stripe. He took eight or nine steps on the back line before realizing he had handed the Vikings the first two points of a game that ended with Minnesota winning, 12-10. Which means that the game was a safety away from going to overtime, and possibly giving the Lions what would have been their only win of the year. Advertisement And, yes, I picked a photo of Orlovsky with Chris "Mad Dog" Russo in the frame, because I'm trying to imagine what Mad Dog was saying to Orlovsky at the time. I choose to think it went something like this. Can I ask you a question? Just one question. What were you thinking when you ran out of the end zone? When you looked down and saw it was white under your feet, did you think that stadium in Minnesota had lost its roof and it was snowing? Had you gotten into my gummies? And why didn't you do it like six more times? I had Minnesota giving 13 that day. You killed me, Orvolebowski. Killed me!
