Padres Expected To Cut Ties With Surging Outfield Prospect In Deadline Deal
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Diego Padres seem bound to hunt a few big trade targets at the upcoming deadline. They need to add an outfielder above all else, but it wouldn't hurt for them to add some pitching, too. With outfielders like Steven Kwan and Jarren Duran reportedly on their radar, the Padres need to be willing to cut ties with some top prospect talent to land them. FanSided's Eric Cole recently predicted the Padres would cut ties with outfield prospect Tirso Ornelas. Ornelas has crushed Triple-A pitching, but struggled in the big leagues. It could be time for a change of scenery. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 27: Tirso Ornelas #21 of the San Diego Padres looks on before the game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Petco Park on April 27, 2025 in San Diego, California."Including Ornelas here is more just hoping he gets to a new organization where he could actually get some playing time as opposed to the crowded Padres roster," Cole wrote. "While the numbers and tools aren't the loudest with Ornelas, the guy can just hit and could probably help a team right now. "If AJ Preller finds a real upgrade for left field, catcher, or their rotation, including Ornelas, could give their trade partner a MLB-ready bat and allow San Diego to include lower-level prospects to round a potential deal out." Ornelas has been good in Triple-A, but big league pitching seems to be a tick too good for him right now. That doesn't mean he's a bust, but he certainly can't help the Padres win right now. If San Diego is going to go after an outfielder on the trade market, it would make sense to send an outfield prospect back in return. Using Ornelas in a deal to acquire a big league outfielder makes perfect sense for the Padres. More MLB: Mariners Predicted To Swing Blockbuster Eugenio Suárez Trade To Win AL West

Border agents seize $6.7 million in amphetamines, stolen sports car
Migrants wait to surrender to the U.S. Border Patrol after crossing the border wall from Mexico near Campo, California, about 50 miles from San Diego, in photo by Pat Benic/UPI | License Photo June 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized a shipment of amphetamines valued at $6.7 billion, intercepted a Canadian citizen attempting to drive a stolen, high dollar sports car into the country, and apprehended a murder suspect at two Texas border crossings within a matter of hours. Officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility in Texas discovered the methamphetamine concealed in a shipping manifesto and disguised as tomatillos. "The cargo environment continues to be a top choice for trafficking organizations but our CBP officers along with our tools and technology are a force to be reckoned with," said Carlos Rodriguez, port director of the Pharr port. Officials seized the drugs and the vehicle they were being transported in. At the same port of entry, officers encountered a 2023 Porsche Cayenne, valued at $55,000, driven by Dileen Raad Sadullah, 39, a Canadian citizen. Border Patrol officers reported that Sadullah's story became inconsistent when questioned by the agents at the initial inspection, which resulted in his being detained for a secondary questioning. "During the secondary examination of the motor vehicle, officers discovered that the Porsche had been reported stolen in Canada earlier that day," a release from CBP said. CBP verified his identity and confirmed with Canadian officials that the vehicle was stolen, the U.S. equivalent of a felony. Sadullah and the vehicle were detained by Canadian law enforcement. That incident also occurred at the Pharr port. Agents apprehended Alan Alexis Ornelas, 31, of Desoto, Tex., at the Hidalgo International Bridge crossing and investigated him in connection with an arrest warrant, then detained him. "Ornelas has been wanted since September, 2024 and is charged with capital murder by terror, a first-degree felony in the state of Texas," a release from CBP said. Ornelas was transported to the Hidalgo County jail where he awaits extradition to Dallas County.

How AmeriCorps cuts are impacting Stockton programs
STOCKTON — Federal cuts continue to impact California's Central Valley. AmeriCorps, a government agency that engages around five million Americans, now faces nearly $400 million in federal cuts from the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. In California, every service-based program with AmeriCorps was told to stop working. That came as a shock to Omar Ornelas, the vice president of programs for Stockton Service Corps. "There was some hope it wouldn't be as deep as our organization, and that clearly wasn't the case," he said. In just 24 hours, Ornelas' service-based program that receives funding from AmeriCorps had its funding cut. "Programs have to make a decision because a huge chunk of their funding isn't going to be there, or releasing their members," he said. "It's tougher than you think." It's especially disheartening for the corps in Stockton because just a day before they found out the funding was being cut, several volunteers went to Mattie Harrell Park and planted 18 trees. Ornelas is now hoping these cuts don't stop the growth of his Stockton office. Established in 2019, the program focused on youth development and education. There are about 75 AmeriCorps members in his program alone who are unsure of what to do. "We have programs like Improve Your Tomorrow, which works with young men of color, which helps raise their graduation rates, which we know is lower than other graduation rates," he said. Until the future is certain, Ornelas is hoping the decision to cut this funding can be reversed. "We're just trying to figure out how to make some shifts and continue," he said. Assemblywoman Rhodesia Ransom, who represents Stockton and a portion of San Joaquin County, said:

‘Off Road Confidential' special takes viewers across California coast
. (NewsNation) — NewsNation is taking off on a road trip to remember. From the beautiful redwoods to the stunning coast, and bustling cities to charming small towns, NewsNation special 'Off Road Confidential,' made in association with Visit California, is finding hidden gems for the everyday traveler and connecting with the people who make these places unforgettable. Gabriel Ornelas made stops in five must-see California places. The views in Marin County, California, give visitors that 'quintessential' vacation feeling: 'I didn't know this was California,' Ornelas said. He visited the county, located between San Francisco and wine country, for one leg of 'Off Road Confidential.' Ornelas got the chance to try some local cheese, take a horseback trek and admire the view from Point Bonita Lighthouse. 'There's amazing institutions, restaurant institutions, for oysters, clam chowder,' Ornelas said. 'You get a little bit of that East Coast feel on the West Coast, which is so nice.' Carmel-by-the-sea in Monterey County, California, is the southernmost stop on NewsNation's 'Off Road Confidential.' The multifaceted town's draws include local wine, lots of shopping and premier hiking spots. One person Ornelas spoke to told him being in Carmel-by-the-sea is being 'surrounded by everything that's good in life.' In Half Moon Bay, which is located roughly 30 miles south of San Francisco, Ornelas ventured out onto the water on a kayak and dug into some locally-made artichoke bread. 'It's this little gem that's just south of the big city,' Ornelas told 'Morning in America.' 'And people should definitely take, you know, the coastal highway down.' Home to some of the biggest waves in the world, Ornelas describes the surfer-laden beaches near Half Moon Bay as 'stunningly beautiful.' 'It's this little beach town that really has this local vibe, and everyone is so nice. It's so charming,' he said. Ornelas discovered Sacramento's rich history and culture talking to the farmers who cultivate the region's produce. Ornelas' itinerary was packed with hidden gems — from food to fun for families, couples and even the solo traveler. 'It's a love letter. It's a postcard, a visual postcard, but really it's an invitation for people to get out, explore, discover California,' Ornelas said. The city's plethora of murals, tasty artisanal chocolate and the Mission District's beautiful Dolores Park make it a can't-miss destination, according to 'Off Road Confidential' host Gabriel Ornelas. 'So many people know it for Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, Fisherman's Wharf, which are all incredible,' Ornelas said. 'But there's so much more.' Whether Ornelas was making chocolate, choosing from 90 different pasta shapes or just taking a stroll in the city's steep streets, he told 'Morning in America' locals and tourists alike can feel welcome. 'San Francisco is for everyone, and you can find something, whatever you want,' Ornelas said. 'You can find something there.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
