Historic Dublin restaurant listed for lease after closing in 2024
DUBLIN, Ohio (WCMH) — More than a year after Oscar's Restaurant and Bar in Dublin permanently closed, the building's owners are searching for new tenants. Several spaces inside the former restaurant at 84 N. High St. in Dublin's historic neighborhood are now available for leasing, according to an online listing by Matt Cooper and Laurah Hallock from Equity Commercial Real Estate Solutions. Nationwide Arena eyes unclaimed funds in Ohio budget for $400 million renovation The listing shows that the building has three first-floor retail units available, one at 951 square feet, another at 1,809 square feet and the third spanning 2,123 square feet. A lower-level 1,496-square-foot office unit is also available. 'Walking distance from a number of coffee shops, restaurants, bars and shopping, there is no shortage of things to do in the area,' the listing states. 'Being right next to The Link, you have easy access to walking paths and many more shops in Bridge Park.' Cooper and Hallock boast the 5-mile radius around the building as featuring a population of 213,483 with 8,860 businesses, 122,329 employees and a median household income of $108,437. The property was home to Oscar's for 30 years before the restaurant and bar shuttered on Jan. 27, 2024. An online auction listing posted at the time, which described the closure as 'sudden,' showed that the eatery's furniture and equipment were sold to the highest bidders the following Monday. The restaurant opened in the early 1990s and was acquired in 1995 by the restaurant group that also owned several Brazenhead Irish pubs and Tucci's, an upscale steak and seafood restaurant just a few blocks away from Oscar's. Tucci's is the only restaurant remaining and completed a $2.5 million expansion in spring 2024. New Franklinton apartments preserve history, offer affordable housing Dwight McCabe, a Columbus-based developer, proposed the idea of opening a 127-room boutique hotel at the restaurant's site. While McCabe told Dublin's Architectural Review Board in 2022 that Oscar's would close to make way for the hotel, the project never moved forward. Marketed as 'creative American cuisine,' Oscar's offerings included a light lunch menu with an extensive wine list and pastas, seafood and steak available for dinner. Run by a former Rockpool chef, this Swan Valley restaurant has all the makings of Perth's next big destination diner
The twin pleasures of the venison duo – loin plus a roulade of peppery shoulder meat – suggests the relationship between Oscar's and its meat wrangler Bully Butcher is a win for all. My hunch was confirmed by the lamb tasting plate and its many ovine glories, from the crispness of skin-on lamb belly to the funk-free richness of the fat crowning slices of tender lamb leg. Forming genuine connections to people and places doesn't just get you good meat: it helps you maximise the resources at hand. Fallen gum trees from the property fire the grill. Fat from dry-aged animals is rendered to help produce all-time potatoes fondant. Late-summer tomatoes brought in by locals, once fermented, become the perfect finishing touch for Spanish mackerel cured in a salt mix modelled on Ginversity's native gin. Does it read like I'm frothing on Oscar's? Good, because I am. While Oscar's is firing after its first year in Herne Hill – previously, it was based in Guildford before building issues forced it to relocate – what's really exciting is that this feels like an operation on the ascent. Easy-going service led by restaurant manager Daniel Adam and Justin's parents feels perfect for the setting; second-generation vigneron Tom Daniel of nearby Chouette Wine in Millendon is helping rehabilitate the property's vines; plus Justin just moved his young family into the farm next to Oscar's, which he'll also be slowly resurrecting. 'There's so much room for us to grow,' says Justin as he excitedly talks about the existing orchard, arable land and potential of his new six-hectare home.
