Oshawa Generals Welcome Promising Finnish Forward Selected in First Round of Import Draft
On Wednesday, the Oshawa Generals announced that the hockey club has signed import forward Onni Kalto to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Kalto, 18, recorded 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists) through 44 games with the U20 TPS team in the U20 SM-sarja league in Finland during the 2024-25 season. Additionally, he played three regular season games and five playoff games for TPS in the top Finnish league Liiga. The Generals used their first-round selection in the 2025 CHL Import Draft to select Kalto 41st overall. The Helsinki, Finland native was ranked 57th amongst European skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2025 NHL Draft. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-2 forward did not hear his name called and will re-enter the draft. Ten OHL Players Named To USA's Hlinka Gretzky Cup Selection Camp USA announced the 38 players who have been invited to their 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup selection camp. The camp is being held in Plymouth, Michigan at the USA Hockey Arena from July 28-Aug. 3. 'Onni will bring some experience and leadership to our group. He skates well and sees the ice well. We are looking forward to seeing Onni in the red, white, and blue,' said Oshawa GM Roger Hunt. Oshawa recently also signed their second-round pick from the import draft, Russian goalie Andrei Bondarev. Now, we wait and see if they will sign their third-round selection Vadim Smirnov, or let him play out the 2025-26 season in Russia before trying to recruit him for the following year. Oshawa Generals' "Crease Battle" Next Season Adds A Third Member; Russian Import Goaltender Signs With Team The Oshawa Generals haven't had to worry about not knowing who their guy was in the crease when they needed a big win. A significant reason why the organization has advanced to consecutive OHL Finals is due to the goaltender they have had in the net, Jacob Oster. Finnish forward Lauri Sinivuori was an import player for the Gens last season and played an important role in the middle six of their forward lineup. However, he is leaving the organization to head back home and play for the Finnish club he grew up playing and developing for, HIFK. Czech defenseman David Svozil's playing destination for next season is still undetermined. He could return as Oshawa's third and final import player; however, he wasn't a regular in their lineup during the playoffs. Oshawa is losing Luca Marrelli, Andrew Gibson, and Luca D'Amato, so there are openings on the blueline. But the organization has recruited two 2008-born American defensemen already, Colin Feeley and Leo Laschon. Forwards Caden Harvey, Brooks Rogowski, and Joseph Salandra are strong candidates to make Team USA's roster up front, while on the backend, the towering 6-foot-7 Colin Feeley and offensively-minded defenseman Levi Harper could form a solid pairing on the blueline. The 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup takes place from Aug. 11-16 in Brno, Czechia, and Trencin, Slovakia. Canada has dominated the tournament, winning gold the past three years. USA usually struggles, as they don't send their best players from the United States National Team Development Program. However, they have made it to the bronze medal game in back-to-back years, winning it in 2023. Last year, only one OHL player made USA's roster — Travis Hayes. Canucks Development Camp: How Riley Patterson got a leg up on demands of the game
Article content The Colts have a solid core returning next season to take the next postseason step. They were swept in the Eastern Conference final this spring by the Oshawa Generals. Article content 'We had a great culture and were very close,' said Patterson. 'I improved in a lot of areas and got a better stride because the game is super-fast. My 200-foot game has also come a long way because of consistency throughout the season to compete every night. Article content 'I prefer the middle, but I'm adaptable because I'm coachable. It's big. Even in minor hockey, I was playing both. Centre is more responsibility and a lot of it is skating through the neutral zone and making plays. I'm at my best when my stick is on the puck.' Article content Patterson would like to model his game after centre Gabriel Vilardi, 25, of the Winnipeg Jets. The 2017 first-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings is an imposing 6-foot-3, 216-pound presence who hit a career-high 27 goals this season. Article content 'He's a big right-handed shot who's good around the net and can play a 200-foot game,' assessed Patterson. 'Strong player with good vision and playmaking abilities.' Article content One player who won't be back in Barrie this fall is winger Anthony Romani. Article content The Canucks' sixth-round draft pick in 2024 is leaving for the NCAA and joining the Michigan State Spartans. He was limited to 35 regular-season games this season with the North Bay Battalion and the Colts because of injury, and had 35 points (21-14). He then amassed 24 points (12-12) in 16 playoff games. Article content In 2023-24, Romani exploded for 58 goals and 111 points with the Battalion and piqued the Canucks' drafting interest. Article content 'It's huge on personal preference in what you and your family think is best for development,' Patterson reasoned of Romani's decision. 'I've loved my time with the organization.' Article content Said Romani: 'I'm pumped. It's a really great school, and what I'm most excited about is the development they have there. Great facilities. Great coaches. I head there next week for summer training.' Article content
