‘Mowing the grass turned into flames': Family fundraising after Osoyoos, B.C., fire that destroyed home
The remains of the Richard and Colleen Baptiste's home in Osoyoos, B.C., is seen in a GoFundMe image. An online fundraiser has been set up for an Osoyoos, B.C., couple who lost their home in a fire that was apparently caused by a lawnmowing mishap. The GoFundMe for Richard and Colleen Baptiste, set up by their children, describes the incident as a 'complete freak accident.' 'A spark from mowing the grass turned into flames,' it reads. The RCMP previously said the fire erupted Thursday afternoon at a property in The Cottages, a gated community at the north end of Osoyoos Lake. According to the B.C. Wildfire Service, the flames spread across approximately 2.4 hectares before crews were able to get it under control. The family said the home where they have lived since 1989 was destroyed, along with all of the Baptistes' belongings – 'clothing, daily essentials, original photos, artwork, cherished keepsakes, irreplaceable cultural and family belongings, and the tools they used for sewing, hunting, and building a life together.' 'Losing it all in minutes has been heartbreaking,' the fundraiser reads. 'Insurance will help eventually, but it could take weeks or longer before further assistance comes through due to paperwork and processing times.' CTV News has reached out to the organizers for more information. The fundraiser had collected more than $13,000 by Monday morning. 'A couple vehicles' on the property were also damaged, according to the RCMP, but firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to any neighbouring homes.

Canadian border agents seize 70 kg of suspected cocaine at Osoyoos, B.C., crossing
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced a "significant seizure" of suspected cocaine being smuggled into Canada at the Osoyoos, B.C., border crossing. Officers inspected a Canadian citizen's pickup truck on June 11 and say they found cocaine bricks weighing 70 kilograms (154 lbs), according to a news release. The driver was returning to Canada from the U.S. The CBSA said it's the largest cocaine seizure at the Osoyoos border, representing an estimated 140,000 individual doses. The driver was arrested and transferred into the custody of the RCMP. Almost 3,500 kilograms of cocaine and crack cocaine have been seized by the CBSA this year, according to government data. Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the CBSA works to "disrupt the activities of transnational crime groups." "With this significant seizure, illegal drugs will not end up in our communities, and the profits will not end up in the hands of organized crime."

Border guards seize 70 kg of cocaine being smuggled into Canada at B.C crossing
This photo provided by the Canada Border Services Agency shows bricks of cocaine, seized at a B.C. crossing. A search of a pickup truck at a B.C. border crossing last month yielded the largest-ever seizure of cocaine at that port of entry, according to officials. On June 11, officers stopped a Canadian citizen returning from the U.S. at the Osoyoos crossing in the province's southern Interior, the Canda Border Services Agency said in a news release Thursday. 'Upon examination of the vehicle's truck bed, officers found bricks of cocaine weighing a total of 70 kilograms,' the statement said, adding that works out to an estimated 144,000 individual doses. The driver, who was not named and has not been charged, was transferred into police custody. 'With this significant seizure, illegal drugs will not end up in our communities, and the profits will not end up in the hands of organized crime,' said Canada's Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, in a statement.
