Neeraj Chopra Backs THIS Indian Cricketer To Be Potential Javelin Throw Star!

Last Updated: Neeraj Chopra praised Jasprit Bumrah's fitness and strength, suggesting he could excel as a javelin thrower. Real recognise real, no matter the sport. So did Neeraj Chopra, who recognised the greatness of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who he believes could prove to be a great javelin thrower himself. During a segment on Star Sports, the star Indian javelin thrower was asked, by the likes of Navjot Singh Sidhu, who in the Indian cricket team he believes could excel as a javelin thrower as well. For the former Olympic champion Chopra, the answer was too simple: Jasprit Bumrah. 'I think it would be a fast bowler for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah will be really good at it," Chopra stated. Bumrah's impressive fitness, coupled with his strength, were the reasons why Chopra banked on the pacer to shine in the other sport as well. And well, there is no questioning Bumrah's excellence, who, despite the injury scare, secured his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket against England in the first Test at Headingley. The call on Bumrah's availability will be taken by him, in consultation with the medical team, and could well open or shut doors for other bowlers waiting in the wings and for a chance. Chopra, on the other hand, has been in fine form lately, having clinched wins in the Doha DL, Paris DL, and the Ostrava Golden Spike. Indian javelin throw ace is now all set to kick off the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, slated to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on the 5th of July. The NC Classic was originally scheduled to be held on the 24th of May, but had to be postponed in the aftermath of the armed conflict between India and neighbouring nation Pakistan. The event promises to pit seven international javelin throwers alongside five Indian athletes, including double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra himself. First Published: June 28, 2025, 15:24 IST

Neeraj Chopra returned to the top of the World Rankings in the latest list released on the official website of the World Athletics this week. Germany's Julian Weber is third with 1407 while Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, the current Olympic champion, is fourth with 1370. The 27-year-old Neeraj, who will defend his title at the World Championships in Tokyo in September, started his season with an invitational meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where he won with a throw of 84.52m in April. Bhajanlal Sharma congratulates Neeraj Chopra for winning Ostrava Golden Spike 2025

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma congratulated two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, who won the men's javelin throw competition at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 athletics at the Mestsky Stadion in Czechia on Wednesday. The reigning world champion, Neeraj, the only person to clear an 85m-plus distance, finished at the top with a throw of 85.29m and registered his 24th straight top-two finish. He continued to extend his dominance, especially after reigning supreme in the Paris Diamond League title last Friday with a mammoth throw of 88.16m. Bhajanlal Sharma posted on X handle, 'Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the great athlete Neeraj Chopra ji for winning the gold medal at the prestigious 'Ostrava Golden Spike 2025' competition held in the Czech Republic, bringing pride to India on the global stage. Jai Hind! @Neeraj_chopra1.' South Africa's Douw Smit, who registered a throw of 84.12m in his second try, finished second, followed by Grenada's Anderson Peters in third with 83.63m that came in his opening attempt. At the Ostrava Golden Spike event, Neeraj brushed off stiff competition from Peters and Thomas Rohler, two athletes who appeared to threaten the Indian's dominance at the event and showed signs of sluggishness in their first throws. Peters didn't offer a sense of surety in his run-up and registered a throw of 83.63m. Rohler, the Rio Olympic champion, was way off his game and heaved the javelin to 69.35m on his return after enduring a period of injuries. While the duo struggled for rhythm, Neeraj registered a foul throw in his first attempt but nailed his second attempt, registering a distance of 83.45m. The Indian javelin sensation moved to the top on his third try by sending his javelin to a distance of 85.29m. He breached the 80m mark in his fourth attempt as well, but didn't appear too impressed with the distance of continued to hold the top spot while his competitor, Rohler, improved his first attempt distance by registering 77.78m. On his fifth try, Neeraj failed to improve his previous attempt and settled with a throw of 81.01m. He concluded the event with a foul effort in his final throw but stayed at the top to bring the title home. (ANI)

'I Am Not That Happy': Neeraj Chopra Admits To Below-Par Performance In Ostrava

Last Updated: Neeraj Chopra won Ostrava Golden Spike with an 85.29m throw, but was not satisfied with his performance, aiming for better results at the World Championship. Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has said that although he is very happy with his win at the Ostrava Golden Spike event on Tuesday, he isn't very happy with his performance, which saw him manage a throw of 85.29m to bag the title, way below his personal best of 90.23m, that he bagged last month in Doha. While Neeraj finished at the top, South Africa's Douw Smit finished second with an 84.12m throw, while Grenada's Anderson Peters was third with 83.63. Germany's Thomas Rohler finished a surprising seventh with 79.18m in a nine-man field. Neeraj's best throw of 85.29m was enough to bag the victory over his eight opponents at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event in Ostrava. 'I am not that happy with my performance today, but I am very happy with the trophy I won. I used to watch this meeting a lot as a kid. I watched people like Jan Zelezny and Usain Bolt winning the Golden Spike, and I dreamt of winning one as well," Neeraj said after the event. Though he led the charts, the two-time Olympic medallist admitted that he fell short of his expectations in front of a packed crowd. 'I know the javelin throw is very popular in Czechia. The amount of support we were getting from the crowd was crazy. I just wish I could have performed better for them," Neeraj said. The two-time Olympic medallist recorded his winning effort in the third round after opening with a foul and a second throw of 83.45m. Neeraj followed up with 82.17m and 81.01m before another foul in the last round. Despite a modest mark by his high standards, he continued his strong form this season, coming off a Diamond League victory in Paris just days earlier. Neeraj's next outing will be at the NC Classic in Bengaluru on Saturday, July 5, where Peters and Rohler are expected to compete as well. Unwilling to put himself under pressure of regular 90m throws, Neeraj had said that he had a good feeling about the Golden Spike Athletics meet in Ostrava as he builds up for his ultimate goal this year, a top finish at the World Championship in Tokyo.
