Beachburg Fair returns to the Ottawa Valley for 169th year
Families enjoyed toonie rides, food trucks and a demolition derby as the Beachburg Fair returned on a hotter than usual summer weekend. Organized by the Beachburg Agricultural Society, the event brings together the entire Ottawa Valley for a weekend of family-friendly fun. The fair is a yearly tradition rooted in history dating back to 1857. As it wrapped up it's 169th weekend on Sunday, organizers say they welcomed over 5,000 people. It's become a yearly tradition for families looking to spend the day playing carnival games, hitting different rides and seeing livestock up close. Rachel Eden is the fair's secretary and says they have added some new attractions over the years. The goal of the fair is to encourage awareness of agriculture, especially for those living in rural communities. 'We've had different events each day. This year, we added a modified truck and tractor pull on Thursday, and it really increased our numbers through our gates,' Eden says. 'On Friday, we had our horse pull and last night, we had our demolition derby, which is a crowd favorite.' Eden says the fair is run by mostly volunteers and adds it's something people love about attending the fair each year. 'We have over like 170 volunteers who make this fair possible, it would not happen without that manpower,' Eden said. 'That's what people love that it's genuine and full of heart and it feels like home when you come here.' Eden says once they wrap up this weekend, organizers will begin to brainstorm plans for next year's 170th anniversary, which she says will be a major milestone.

Teen charged with attempted murder, sexual assault in attack that injured young girl in Quadeville, Ont.: OPP

(Shaun Vardon/CTV News Ottawa) A 17-year-old male has been charged with attempted murder in connection with an attack that seriously injured a young girl in the Ottawa Valley two weeks ago, according to police. An eight-year-old girl was found with serious injuries along Quadeville Road in Quadeville, Ont. at approximately 12:30 a.m. on June 24. Ontario Provincial Police had responded to a report of a missing child in the community. The Renfrew Paramedic Service said the girl was suffering from 'multiple life-threatening traumatic injuries.' The child was transported to CHEO, where she was listed in serious but stable condition last week. The child remains under the care of medical professionals. Ontario Provincial Police announced Wednesday a teenager from eastern Ontario has been charged with attempted murder and sexual assault with a weapon on a person under 16 years old. Police say the name of the accused cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. On June 25, police initially said investigators suspected the girl was injured in an animal attack but said that 'further testing and analysis is required.' 'During the investigation, the cause of the victim's injuries was unclear. While early evidence suggested a possible animal attack, investigators did not rule out human involvement,' the OPP said in a media release Wednesday evening. 'To aid in the investigation, multiple pathology experts were consulted. While the incident is still under investigation, recent testing of samples taken from the victim's wounds has now revealed no traces of animal DNA.' (Dylan Dyson/CTV News Ottawa) There was a heightened police presence in Quadeville Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, with several OPP cruisers parked on one street in the community. 'Really hard for the parents to think that….they didn't seem like they didn't know anything either,' Bernard Dwyer told CTV News Ottawa. 'I never figured it was an animal,' Mary Dwyer said Wednesday afternoon. Police had warned residents to keep children indoors or under close supervision as the investigation continued into the incident. Ontario Provincial Police are planning to hold a townhall meeting in Quadeville on Saturday to 'address questions and concerns from local residents.' 'The OPP acknowledges the community's concerns regarding this incident and sincerely appreciates the public's patience as the investigation progresses,' the OPP said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Quadeville is located 160 km west of Ottawa and 75 km of Renfrew. Celtic culture celebrated at annual Almonte, Ont. festival
Celtic culture was celebrated this weekend in the Ottawa Valley at Almonte Celtfest. Celtfest co-chair Macayla Moore says the festival showcases local Irish, Scottish, francophone and Anishnaabe culture and history. She says it's a chance to celebrate the traditions that run deep in the region. 'It's kind of just about the connection,' she said. 'The whole event is also about bringing the community together and heritage.' Moore says the event has been going on for 29 years. It is expected to draw thousands throughout the three-day event. Olivia Faria and her sister, who are performing Ottawa Valley step dancing on Sunday, say they were inspired to take it up after seeing it for the first time. 'We were really passionate about it,' she said. The 13-year-old from Brampton says the tradition dates back to the 1800s, combining Scottish, Irish and Métis dance and fiddle playing. Performing in front of a crowd for the first time is a big moment for her. 'I hope one day I see a young kid, want to pick up the fiddle and step dance and say, 'I got inspired by you,'' she said. Moore says this year, there's a focus on inspiring the next generation with a youth showcase on the main stage. 'Now that a lot of us have young kids too, we really want to pass on the heritage and the just the event, the local spirit,' she said. The event wraps up Sunday, with the last performance scheduled for 5 p.m.
