Joburg baboon finally captured after 8 days on the loose
A male baboon that had been on the loose for eight days in Northcliff, Johannesburg, was finally caught this morning.
According to the Northcliff Melville Times, Brendan Murray from Owl Rescue says they had been monitoring the baboon for the past three months. It had travelled from the Magaliesberg area before making its way to Northcliff.
Murray adds the baboon had been searching for a new troop. Owl Rescue had set a trap to capture it, while Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) had set two traps. 'Our goal was to catch him safely and minimise any disturbances.'
The animal was ultimately captured in a trap set up at a resident's home.
Bhaai Cassim, the secretary for the Johannesburg Sub-District Police Board, confirms that, at the time of publishing, Claw was on its way to collect the baboon, which will first undergo a health check before being released into the wild at a remote location.
Cassim thanks everyone involved for monitoring and capturing the baboon safely.
