HC orders removal of man's photo from rowdy list gallery

The Kerala High Court has ordered the removal of the photo of a person from the rowdy list gallery at the Fort Kochi police station within two weeks, saying that 'once a rowdy, need not always be a rowdy'. 'Reformation is the main goal of Indian criminal jurisprudence. Economic hardship and many other factors could lead to one's involvement in crimes. No person is born a criminal. An opportunity must be given to reform himself,' Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan said, while hearing a petition by Nixon of Fort Kochi. Mr. Nixon's counsel contended that his circle of friends led him to get involved in criminal cases till eight years ago, and that he was acquitted in almost all pending cases. He now leads a quiet life with family and is a God-fearing man, working as a supervisor in the building contract works of his brother. His photo with his name beneath exhibited in the rowdy list gallery at the station would even affect his marriage prospects. Opposing the petition, the public prosecutor said that the petitioner had been involved in many cases, including serious ones, for 13 years since 2004. He was also in constant touch with people engaged in criminal activities, and there was a need for surveillance to make him desist from involvement in criminal activities, he contended.

SAI centre in Bengaluru: the go-to venue for athletes seeking world-class facilities at home

From a modest training base with limited facilities to being responsible for implementing all Sports Authority of India (SAI) schemes across three states and holding National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) for hockey, athletics and volleyball, financial and professional impetus have made the Netaji Subhas Southern Centre (NSSC) the go-to venue for athletes seeking world-class facilities at home. With a cumulative investment exceeding ₹140 crore, the NSSC has undergone a major transformation in the last decade. Besides the three NCOEs for comprehensive training across age-groups, the centre also hosts national camps in table tennis, kabaddi and water polo and conducts academic programmes in 11 disciplines. The 3000m steeplechase national record holder Avinash Sable said the venue had always helped him perform well at major competitions. 'I came here for the first time in 2017 and things have changed a lot. The recovery centre is new, there are two synthetic tracks, experts for physiotherapy, medicine, biomechanics. I have trained abroad also but no facility has so many things together at one place. I have always performed well after training here,' he said. The centre today has a state-of-the-art sports science centre with labs for biomechanics, sports medicine and sports psychology equipped with some of the latest testing and training machines from across the world. Out in the field, the athletics stadium boasts of a smart track with sensors that can gather and analyse data of every stride, exclusive strength and conditioning area, recovery room and modern changing rooms for hockey with more facilities planned in the near future, including exclusive testing machines for para-athletes. P.V. Sindhu, who came for isokinetic testing, was appreciative of the facilities. 'I have come here a couple of times and SAI has always been very helpful. My father also used to come here as a player and things have changed completely since then,' said the badminton star. The biggest change, however, has been in the diet department with the centre boasting of a state-of-the-art research kitchen headed by chef Jeyraj that works closely with nutritionists to create customised recipes and also provides athlete's meal cards to track their consumption. Despite recent setbacks, Sindhu confident of turning the corner on the tour

She hasn't won a title in nine outings since the Syed Modi International in November last year, not reached the last four, in fact, but P.V. Sindhu remains optimistic about the future. Training with Indonesian coach Irwansyah since the beginning of this year, Sindhu has come close on a couple of occasions but fallen short, specially in matches that stretched into the decider. 'The women's singles game has changed. Earlier it was more of attack and fast rallies but now it's much more defensive with long rallies and long matches, the game has slowed down. 'I need to change my training schedule accordingly. I need to do my physical fitness and endurance. We have been working on that, especially in terms of being more patient to continue the rallies and keep the shuttle in play for 30-40 strokes,' the double Olympic medalist told select mediapersons at the SAI Centre here on Thursday. Sindhu, who was visiting to test her strength and endurance at the SAI Bengaluru's state-of-the-art Sports Science Centre, insisted there were no concerns but admitted training and recovery modules have to adapt with age. 'Fitness and training wise everything is going well. We have two more weeks to prepare before we start off with Japan and China. It is important to be 100 percent fit physically and mentally otherwise it will be difficult to come back from injuries. 'We used to play multiple consecutive events in our 20s. But now you have to make sure your body condition is good, you can't just go out there and play 5-6 tournaments in a row and not be fit, risk injury and make it worse. You need to make sure how the body is feeling after every tournament,' she said. Questions about her recent results were inevitable and Sindhu admitted they were a concern but added that things were moving in the right direction. 'I know people might say you have won everything, there's no pressure. But it is important to make sure I maintain it. Recent results definitely bother me. I have been working on changing my mindset after losses. Sometimes you just get sad but it's important to bounce back. Earlier I was losing easily but recently there have been some tough matches with top athletes. The difference is little but hopefully in China and Japan you will see the results,' she signed off.

Polls and processes: on Assembly by-elections, the ECI

The results of the by-elections in five Assembly constituencies — Kadi (SC) and Visavadar in Gujarat, Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab and Kaliganj in West Bengal — indicate the factors at play at the local and regional levels. The Congress-led United Democratic Front candidate Aryadan Shoukath won the Nilambur seat. P.V. Anvar, who had won in 2021 as a Left-backed independent, vacated the seat after a spat with the ruling coalition, contested as a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate (which was rejected) and then stood as an independent. The seat falls in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency represented by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate performed poorly. The outcome could impact the tone of the campaigning for the Kerala Assembly elections due next year. The alignment of communities and relative power of parties in both Fronts will be affected by the Nilambur result. In the Kaliganj constituency in Nadia district, the ruling TMC's candidate Alifa Ahmed won by a margin of over 50,000 votes. Her father's death had led to the by-poll. Counting day was marred by the death of a child in a crude bomb explosion, a sign of the continuing and disturbing role of violence in the State. Assembly elections in West Bengal will take place next year. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s wins in Visavadar and Ludhiana West are significant for a party that lost power in Delhi, its original stronghold, in February. Its MLA in Visavadar had defected to the BJP, and the renewed mandate helps AAP retain its stake in State politics. Its former State president Gopal Italia is the winner. AAP's former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and industrialist Sanjeev Arora won the Ludhiana West seat in a State it rules. The BJP retained Kadi. The by-polls were also notable for the new initiatives by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reinforce the integrity of the electoral process and make it more accessible. These include mobile deposit facility for the electors at all polling stations, upgraded voter turnout sharing process resulting in faster updating of the approximate polling trends, and most significantly, webcasting at 100% of polling stations. The issues of disputes over heavy polling in sensitive booths in the concluding hours of voting and transparency related to video records of booth activities remain, and the ECI must continue to take proactive measures to not only be fair but also to be seen so.

UDF victory reflects strong anti-govt. sentiment: KPCC chief

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph on Monday termed the United Democratic Front's victory in the Nilambur bypoll a clear verdict against the State government, attributing the victory to widespread anti- government sentiment and coordinated efforts by the front. 'This is a victory of teamwork and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the government must take this as a lesson,' he told mediapersons. On questions regarding Independent candidate P.V. Anvar's significant vote share, Mr. Joseph acknowledged the impact but said the matter would be addressed in due course. 'The issue of bringing Mr. Anwar to the forefront will be discussed later,' he said. He reiterated that the UDF's win was not the result of individual efforts, but a collective push by the alliance. 'This success is a product of united work by the UDF,' he added.
