13 seafarers stranded for nearly 3 months off Iloilo coast rescued

Thirteen seafarers, including six Filipinos, disembarked from a cargo ship where they were left stranded off the Iloilo Strait for nearly three months due to salary disputes and issues related to the vessel's seaworthiness. Following nearly five hours of negotiations between the ship captain, representatives of the shipowner and the crewing agency on June 30, the crew finally left the Comoros-flagged MV Hirman Star and authorities were granted access to board the vessel. In a Facebook post, Iloilo City Congresswoman Julienne Baronda said the crew would receive their back wages, and the six Filipino seafarers would each receive P100,000 in assistance from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). The rescued crew underwent general medical checkups under the care of the Iloilo City Health Office (CHO) to assess if they are fit to travel home. The remaining crew of seven Indian citizens are scheduled to undergo their medical evaluations this afternoon. Representatives from the DMW and OWWA were present during the operations to provide support and facilitate the assistance process. MV Hirman Star had been anchored off Iloilo waters for weeks, with the crew unable to leave due to unpaid salaries and lack of action from the vessel's management. The situation came to the attention of local authorities through public reports, prompting inter-agency coordination that led to the crew's release. —Sherylin Untalan/RF, GMA Integrated News

Dump truck stolen, sold by Bulacan LGU utility helper, 3 others

Authorities are searching for the utility helper of the Marilao, Bulacan local government unit (LGU) and three others after they stole and sold a government dump truck. According to Oscar Oida's Monday report on '24 Oras,' CCTV footage showed the two men driving away the truck from the Municipal Engineering Office. Based on police investigation, the suspects brought the truck to a wet market in Guiguinto, Bulacan, loaded it into a bigger truck the next day, and passed through the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). The suspects are the Municipal Engineering Office's utility helper, his wife and cousin, and another person. The suspects allegedly sold the truck for P100,000 to a buyer from San Mateo, Rizal, who resold the truck for P400,000 after allegedly producing fake documents. Authorities, by backtracking of CCTV footage, found the stolen truck with the second buyer after two weeks. The four suspects are facing carnapping charges. Meanwhile, authorities are looking into filing charges against the buyers for violating the Anti-Fencing Law. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News

Robbers punch senior citizen, take P100K cash, jewelry

A 77-year-old senior citizen lost around P100,000 in cash and jewelry to robbers, who also punched her in the face and the leg, in a crime committed in broad daylight in Tondo, Manila. The victim, "Lola Minerva," was on her way home from the market when a man and a woman approached her and talked to her, eventually persuading her to board a car with her assailants. Inside the car, the suspects took away her cash and jewelry, and hurt her. She was dropped in the area of Baseco Compound and left her with P200 for transportation. The victim immediately reported the incident to the barangay for assistance. The barangay official said a portion of the road where the senior citizen passes by was closed that day, which prevented the pedicabs from entering and transporting residents to their homes. The official added that they have heard of the same modus victimizing the elderly who often go to the market. He said the barangay will assist the police in pursuing the case. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Killing of P200 pay hike bill also kills bid for living wage in Philippines

MANILA: To have a basic but decent standard of living, a local think tank stressed the need for a P1,217 (US$21) living wage in Metro Manila, where most workers are compelled to make do with a minimum wage of P608 to P645. Outside Metro Manila, the minimum wage is also way lower than the P872 to P2,030 living wage, which Ibon Foundation computed based on the government's wage and inflation data. This was the reason that the proposed P100 or P200 wage hike would have been an important step toward a living wage, not only in Metro Manila but all over the Philippines, the think tank said. It pointed this out as 'minimum wage earners will feel immediate benefits and should be able to look forward to a living wage that actually raises their families' standard of living to a decent level.' But since the 19th Congress ended without the Senate and House of Representatives agreeing on how much the wage hike should be, workers will not have anything to expect, not even P50. The P100 wage hike proposal in the Senate was approved last year, Feb 19, while the House of Representatives approved its bill, proposing a P200 wage hike, on June 5. It would have been the first legislated wage hike since 1989, when the Wage Rationalization Act was signed and created the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards. But Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero said House Bill No. 11376 and Senate Bill No. 2534 were not a priority of the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council. Last year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., declining to certify the bills as urgent, asked the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards to initiate a review of minimum wages. The regional boards in Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region and Mimaropa, among others, approved wage hikes, but only worth P35 to P40, effective last year. 'As pointed out by the government's economic managers, an across-the-board wage hike could have 'dangerous repercussions' on the economy, saying that it could lead to higher inflation, and even jobless rates. They stated on June 11, a few days after the House of Representatives approved its bill, that a P200 increase could raise inflation by two percentage points, while a P100 hike may lead to an increase of 0.7 percentage points. Likewise, they estimated that a P200 wage hike would lead to a 0.6 percentage points increase in joblessness, and a 0.2 percentage points increase if the wage hike is P200. This, as MSMEs, or micro, small and medium enterprises, which constitute over 90 per cent of all businesses, and who considerably depend on minimum wage workers, 'may struggle.' The proposed wage hike, they said, may lead, as well, to higher production costs, which could result in higher prices that may disproportionately affect low-income households. But for Ibon Foundation, the government can intervene if it is concerned about MSMEs that could not shell out an additional P2,000 to P4,000 for every worker a month. It said 'contrary to government misgivings and employer complaints, a P200 wage hike is feasible and takes up just a small portion of company profits: 11.1 percent for large; 9.1 per cent for medium, and 12.9 per cent for small businesses.' A wage hike of P200 would be 15 per cent of the profit of micro businesses. Ibon Foundation stressed that any large increase in minimum wage would bring 'substantial relief to wage earners and their families by increasing the households' purchasing power.' 'Wage hikes also help boost the informal economy, where workers spend their earnings, and overall they are a strong driver of economic activity and more inclusive growth,' it said. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

AZ Martinez and River Joseph win task, to donate P100K to cancer treatment charity in honor of their dads

AZ Martinez and her duo River Joseph emerged as the winners of the Charity Task in "Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition," which will allow them to donate P100,000 to their chosen charity: the Cancer Treatment and Support Foundation Inc. As seen in the episode on Friday night, AZ and River won the task after building the highest tower using balls, ball stackers, and a panungkit. Back in the confession room, AZ and River expressed their joy in winning the task and the opportunity to help other people. AZ and River also dedicated their victory to their dads, who they lost to liver cirrhosis and cancer, respectively. "I'm just happy na we were able to do it, I'm just happy that we are a blessing to others, Kuya," said AZ. River, for his part, shared that this is his first time winning a task in "PBB." "I'm happy na it wasn't for me but for something greater. Ito talaga, Kuya, it's an honor for both our dads. I think they were with us and I think they helped us in this task kasi alam nila na andami naming [matutulungan] dahil dito," he said. River then turned emotional when he was asked by Kuya what his dad would feel if he were alive. "I think he'll be proud, Kuya. My dad, sobrang generous niyang tao and lagi kong sinasabi I want to follow in his footsteps. I want to be just like him, siya ang hero ko," he said. "If he were alive today, I'm sure he'd be happy, I'm sure he'd be proud na andami naming matutulungan dahil dito," he added. AZ also said that winning the task is a huge tribute to her dad. According to the Kapuso housemate, her dad would always help other people even when they were at their lowest financially, emotionally, and mentally. "He made sure to help other people and to be a blessing, and that's what I learned not only from my dad but also from my mom. If you're blessed, be a blessing to others. If you're at your lowest, still be a blessing to others," she said. "Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition" airs new episodes on GMA Network weeknights at 10:05 p.m. and Saturdays at 6:15 p.m. —CDC, GMA Integrated News
