Join PBG in spreading warmth to cancer patients and pensioners

POLOKWANE – As Mandela Month continues, the PBG Help Group is calling on the community to open their hearts and help bring comfort to cancer patients and pensioners through a special winter initiative. This non-profit organisation, known for its tireless work in supporting vulnerable groups, is collecting completed crocheted items including beanies, blankets, and soft toys, that will be donated to cancer patients at Cansa units and elderly residents in need. These hand-crafted items are intended to offer more than just warmth – they also provide emotional support during some of the toughest moments in a patient's journey. Petro du Preez from PBG explained that the initiative is about spreading love and hope to those often forgotten. 'This Mandela Day, we want to give something that comes from the heart. You don't need to be able to crochet to get involved. We're also collecting donations of colouring books, crayons, water bottles, toiletries, snacks, and toys – small items that can make a big difference in someone's day.' These items will be distributed to both children and adults undergoing cancer treatment at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with sorting and distribution on Mandela Day. The deadline for donations is Thursday, July 17, and the drop-off location is at 23B Bodenstein Street, Luwalt Building, Polokwane. Those who wish to contribute or have questions can contact Petro du Preez directly at 078 453 1433. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

DIB arranges $1bn sovereign financing for Pakistan

Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB), the largest bank in the UAE, has finalised a syndicated term finance facility deal worth $1 billion with the Government of Pakistan. The facility was arranged in collaboration with a consortium of regional and international financial institutions, read a statement on Wednesday. The five-year facility is partially guaranteed by a Policy-Based Guarantee (PBG) from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) — marking the first PBG transaction of its kind undertaken by ADB for the country. The Islamic tranche, structured as an AAOIFI-compliant Commodity Murabaha, represents approximately 89% of the total facility, which reflects the growing demand for Shariah-based financing and supports Pakistan's strategic objective of expanding Islamic finance. As per the statement, DIB acted as the Sole Islamic Global Coordinator and, alongside Standard Chartered, also served as the Joint Mandated Lead Arranger and Bookrunner. China rolls over $3.4 billion of commercial loans to Pakistan, says source Other leading Islamic banks from the region included Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Ajman Bank and Sharjah Islamic Bank. 'This landmark financing arrangement not only underscores the strong confidence of regional and international financial institutions in Pakistan's economic reform trajectory, but also marks an important step in expanding our access to innovative and Shariah-compliant funding solutions,' said Minister of Finance, Muhammad Aurangzeb. Meanwhile, Dr Adnan Chilwan, Group Chief Executive Officer, DIB, commented: 'This transaction marks a key milestone in demonstrating how Sharia-compliant financing can be scaled effectively to meet sovereign objectives while upholding partnership and prudence. 'DIB is delighted to have reintroduced Pakistan's credit to the Islamic term financing market after a hiatus of over two years through an innovative structure. We are confident this will pave the way for the government to access broader pools of Sharia-compliant liquidity in the near future,' he said. The Islamic bank shared that the inclusion of an ADB Policy-Based Guarantee has played a key role in facilitating Pakistan's return to the international commercial market, while reflecting confidence in the country's ongoing fiscal reforms and macroeconomic resilience. 'For the Government of Pakistan, the transaction marks a strategic re-engagement with Middle East capital markets after more than two years, demonstrating growing investor trust and a renewed appetite for collaboration through ethical and cost-effective financing solutions,' it said.

PBG Gallery To Host Okokume and Pol Segura's ‘Two Voices, One Path' Exhibition

Summary PBG Galleryis set to hostTwo Voices, One Path, the inaugural joint exhibition by acclaimed Spanish artistsOkokumeandPol Segura. Opening later this month, this show marks a significant moment in their two-decade-long partnership, spanning both their personal and creative lives. The exhibition deeply explores the theme of 'sharing,' inviting viewers into a contemplative space where two distinct artistic languages not only coexist but actively converse. Okokume, known globally for her signature Cosmic Girl character, presents 23 new works that delve into themes of emotion, environmental awareness and interconnectedness. Her vibrant, pop-inflected canvases serve as mirrors of inner reflection, with Cosmic Girl acting as both guide and symbol. In this exhibition, the character appears in bolder, more expressive forms, offering a deeper look into the artist's evolving visual narrative and continued exploration of contemporary social issues. Pol Segura's abstract compositions bring a complementary contrast to the show. His animated plant forms stretch, twist and dance across chaotic landscapes, symbolizing resilience and the journey of self-discovery. Influenced by artists such as Willem de Kooning and Francis Bacon, Segura's work blends organic spontaneity with rhythmic structure. His pieces offer a visual counterpoint to Okokume's emotive storytelling, highlighting the harmony that can emerge from divergent perspectives. Together, the artists transform the gallery into a shared landscape of dual perspectives. While each maintains a distinct voice, their works engage in a fluid dialogue. The VIP opening reception will be held on July 17, with the show running through August 9 at PBG. PBGPBG Hannam, 87 Dokseodang-ro,Seoul, South Korea

More trees outside President's estate cut in Dehradun on eve of Environment Day

Dehradun: At least three more trees were felled outside Rashtrapati Ashiana, the President's estate, on Wednesday, just a day before World Environment Day, despite a protest last week over the cutting of a 100-year-old Toon tree near the estate. Some officials claimed the trees were removed to clear space for a 9m-wide visitor entry gate being constructed as part of preparations to open the estate to the public on June 20. The move has angered environmental activists, who pointed out that authorities had earlier assured them that no harm would come to the surrounding ecology when they raised concerns about the project disrupting one of Dehradun's last remaining green stretches. The Toon tree was allegedly cut to make way for a foot overbridge (FOB), intended to connect the 186-year-old estate to a new parking lot being developed on defence land opposite the site. Currently occupied by the President's Bodyguard (PBG) regiment of the Indian Army, the estate will offer visitors access to the main building, a museum on the PBG's 251-year history, an equestrian facility, and other amenities. "One tree was felled earlier, three now. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo At least three more hang precariously by their roots along the boundary where drain work is being carried out. Many more are in the way of the entry gate and FOB, and we are afraid they will be lost too. From the ongoing work, it is clear that many trees are being cleared inside the estate as well, but we don't have any details on how many," said Ashish Garg, an environmentalist. Public Works Department (PWD) officials maintained that "only two" trees were cut on Wednesday, one of which was already tilting. "This was done for public safety. The action was taken with due permission from the forest department and executed by Van Nigam. These are the only trees that will be affected. The hanging trees will be secured once the drain work is complete. The department understands the value of green cover and has no intention of causing unnecessary damage," said a senior PWD official on condition of anonymity. A TOI spot visit revealed two leftover stumps and another tree that was uprooted and removed. However, eco-activists are not convinced by such assurances. "They assured us that no green cover would be lost. After the first tree was chopped, we protested, and PWD said that would be the only casualty. Now more are gone. How many more trees must we lose to unchecked infrastructure in Dehradun? Authorities are labelling even healthy trees as risky and chopping them," said Himanshu Arora from Citizens for Green Doon, a social organisation working to safeguard the Doon valley's green cover. Dehradun residents are also questioning the rationale behind sacrificing green cover for tourism. "This is Sahastradhara Road all over again," said Garg, referring to the 2,000 trees which were removed to widen the road. Activists warn that road expansion, slip roads, drainage work, and even sidewalk concretisation threaten to further damage the remaining tree cover.
