Azhar Mahmood appointed Pakistan's acting red-ball head coach

LAHORE: Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was on Monday elevated to the post of Pakistan's acting red-ball head coach until the conclusion of his current contract, which runs until April next year. Mahmood had signed a two-year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board in April last year as assistant coach across formats along with Australia's Jason Gillespie (Tests) and South Africa's Gary Kirsten (limited overs), who have both moved on. "The Pakistan Cricket Board today announces Azhar Mahmood as the acting red-ball head coach of the Pakistan men's team. Azhar will serve in this role until the conclusion of his current contract," the PCB said in a statement. "A seasoned cricketing mind, Azhar Mahmood steps into the role with an impressive portfolio of experience. Having served as the assistant head coach of the national side, Azhar has long been a pivotal part of the team's strategic core. "His deep knowledge of the game, combined with hands-on international exposure and proven success in the English county circuit, make him exceptionally well-suited for this position," the PCB added. PCB highlighted Mahmood's achievements in winning County Championship titles for Surrey as their assistant coach. "His red-ball pedigree is underscored by two County Championship titles — an achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, tactical acumen and unwavering commitment to excellence," it said. "The PCB is confident that under Azhar's guidance, the red-ball squad will continue to grow in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage,” the board added. The 50-year-old Mahmood played 21 Tests and 143 ODIs for Pakistan between 1996 and 2007.

Pakistan name Azhar Mahmood as latest red-ball head coach

Pakistan on Monday named former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood interim head coach of the Test side, the fourth man to take the post in the last 18 months. The 50-year-old will remain in the position until January, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said. As a pace bowling all-rounder Mahmood played 143 one-day internationals and 21 Tests for Pakistan, and has been serving as assistant coach since last year. "The PCB announces Mahmood as the acting red-ball head coach of the Pakistan men's team," said a PCB press release. Mahmood replaces Aaqib Javed, who was interim head coach for the Test series in South Africa in December-January and at home against the West Indies. Javed left after Pakistan lost all four Tests and finished ninth and last in the third cycle of the World Test Championship. Javed took over from former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie, who quit six months into his stint in December 2024 after differences with the PCB. Before Gillespie, former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez was team director and oversaw a 3-0 Test defeat in Australia. Monday's appointment is part of a series of changes the PCB has taken to improve the performances of the national team after a poor two years. Last month, New Zealand's Mike Hesson took over as white-ball head coach for two years. Pakistan will host South Africa in their first series of the latest WTC cycle in October this year and then Sri Lanka in December-January.

Azhar Mahmood appointed Pakistan's acting red-ball coach till end of current contract

Former Pakistan all rounder Azhar Mahmood, who had signed a two-year contract in 2024 as the national team's assistant coach across formats along with Australia's Jason Gillespie (Tests) and South Africa's Gary Kirsten (limited overs), was on Monday elevated to the Men in Green's acting red-ball coach till the conclusion of his contract. The PCB is confident that under Azhar's guidance, the red-ball squad will continue to grow in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage,' the board said. Meanwhile, earlier this month, both Kirsten and Gillespie had reflected on their tenure as Pakistan coaches, saying that it was a pretty tough time. Gillespie, the former Australia fast bowler, has said that the experience had 'soured' his love for coaching and Kirsten, who had stepped down before the former, said that he understood pretty early on that he wouldn't have too much authority on selection. 'It was a tumultuous few months,' Kirsten was quoted as saying by Wisden. 'I realised quite quickly I wasn't going to have much of an influence. Once I was taken off selection and asked to take a team and not be able to shape the team, it became very difficult as a coach then to have any sort of positive influence on the group.'
