DigitalNEXUS 2025 marks milestone in Sarawak's tech transformation, says Premier

KUCHING (July 2): The Unimas Digital Technology Nexus (DigitalNEXUS) 2025 has reaffirmed Sarawak's strong commitment to accelerating digital transformation through infrastructure development, innovation, and digital talent cultivation. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak is steadfast in its effort to expand digital infrastructure, nurture a digitally skilled workforce, and foster innovation across all sectors. 'DigitalNEXUS serves as a vital platform to assess our progress, identify areas for improvement, and, most importantly, reignite our collective passion for this transformative agenda,' said Abang Johari in a speech delivered by Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn at the event's closing here yesterday. Abang Johari noted that the state's vision for digital advancement is clearly outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), in which Digital Economy is one of the core pillars. He added that the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 acts as a strategic roadmap to realise this vision, outlining actionable steps across key areas such as infrastructure enhancement, human capital development, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. 'DigitalNEXUS is not just a platform for discussion. It is a collaborative space for ideation, knowledge sharing, and forging partnerships,' he said. Abang Johari also highlighted the importance of youth in shaping Sarawak's digital future, citing their strong participation throughout the event as an encouraging sign. 'Our young generation is at the forefront of this digital revolution. I am heartened by the high involvement of students, from primary schools to university level,' he said. 'We must equip them with the skills and opportunities to not only adapt to the digital age but to lead it. 'Investing in digital literacy and STEM education remains a top priority for our government.' The inaugural DigitalNEXUS 2025, held on July 1 and 2, was organised by Unimas under the Office of the Chief Digital Officer, in collaboration with industry partners and both federal and state agencies. The event aimed to promote knowledge sharing, networking, and innovation in digital technology, while serving as a platform for academics, students, and industry players to exchange insights and discuss key trends. UPM Bintulu Campus renamed UPM Sarawak with Sultan of Selangor's consent
KLANG: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has consented to the rebranding of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus in Sarawak as UPM Sarawak (UPMS). Sultan Sharafuddin said the rebranding was a strategic move by UPM to expand its role in conjunction with the university's 50th anniversary in Sarawak. UPM was formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. 'I am very proud of this university's achievements, not only as a centre of excellence in agriculture, forestry and food security, but also as a catalyst for national development, especially in Sarawak. It has become a competitive institution in the Borneo region and on the international stage. 'I hope UPM's efforts and commitment will continue in developing talent and expertise to advance the country's socio-economic progress, particularly in Sarawak, through the UPM Food Security Blueprint that has been developed,' said His Royal Highness at the UPMS Proclamation Ceremony held here today. Sultan Sharafuddin was accompanied by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. Also present were Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. In his speech, Abang Johari said the strengthening of UPMS aligns with the aspirations of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), particularly in the agriculture, forestry and renewable energy sectors. He said one of UPMS's notable achievements is the implementation of the AgriHub@Gedong project, a strategic collaboration between the university and the Sarawak Premier's Office. 'This project aims to spearhead the transformation of padi cultivation activities in Lubok Punggor, Gedong, and marks an important starting point in efforts to develop Sarawak as a national-level high-impact padi production hub,' he said. Abang Johari added that, in line with Sarawak's commitment to higher education and strategic research, the School of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (SVAS) will be established in collaboration with UPMS to support the state's food security aspirations. He also expressed the state government's commitment to providing funding to ensure the sustainability of SVAS, which will be the first model of its kind involving a partnership between the Sarawak government and a public university. 'The establishment of this school will open up more opportunities for Sarawakian youth to pursue studies in veterinary science, thereby strengthening the sustainability of the livestock industry and improving animal health standards in Sarawak,' he said.

Awg Tengah: Sarawak's reef ball project shows promising results, gains global recognition

LAWAS (June 26): Sarawak's reef ball barrier project, which has been rolled out since 2018, has shown promising signs of restoring the marine ecosystem, protecting habitats, and increasing fish stocks in designated areas, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said the state is currently in the final stages of deploying 300 units of reef ball structures under the Phase 2 project, across six clusters designated as Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs). 'This initiative is not just a conservation project, but a symbol of the Sarawak government's commitment to ensuring that the state's natural resources are protected and sustainably utilised for future generations as well as to strengthen the implementation of the blue economy in Sarawak. 'This is in line with the framework we are implementing, led by the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), and supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda, especially SDG14,' he said at the launch of the Sarawak Reef Ball Phase 2 project in Kampung Awat-Awat here today, representing Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Also present were State Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail; Lawas MP Dato Henry Sum Agong; Batu Danau assemblyman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang; Political Secretary to the Premier, Awangku Jinal Abedin Dato Pengiran Jawa; Northern Region Development Agency director Datu Ubaidillah Latip; and Sarawak Forestry Corporation general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran. Awang Tengah, who is also State Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, said the project is part of the continued development of the Tukun Reef Ball corridor along the Sarawak coastline. 'In 2022, the Sarawak government was recognised by the Reef Ball Development Group based in the United States for successfully establishing the world's longest reef ball barrier, stretching 746 kilometres. 'I understand that it will provide new fishing grounds or sport fishing spots for the people of Lawas, especially from Sundar to Awat-Awat. 'In 2019, six fishing locations were created from Bukit Sari to Punang. This brings the total to 12 sport fishing spots in Lawas' coastal waters.
