SC affirms Tamayo presidency of Marcos' Partido Federal ng Pilipinas
In a 19-page decision, the SC en banc affirmed the resolutions of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) dated September 6, 2024, and October 3, 2024, concerning the leadership dispute within the party. The Supreme Court (SC) has affirmed that South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. is the national president of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), the political party of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. In a 19-page decision, the SC en banc affirmed the resolutions of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) dated September 6, 2024, and October 3, 2024, concerning the leadership dispute within the party. The poll body had dismissed the petition of former Catanduanes Governor Leandro Verceles Jr. and former Capas, Tarlac Mayor Antonio Rodriguez Jr. to resolve the intra-party conflict within PFP for lack of merit. Verceles was claiming to be the PFP's national president, replacing Tamayo, following a supposed election among members in 2023. Meanwhile, Rodriguez was claiming to be the elected secretary general of the party, succeeding retired police general Thompson Lantion. Both alleged that the terms of Tamayo as president, Lantion as secretary general, and George Briones as general counsel of PFP expired on September 18, 2023. Verceles and Rodriguez alleged that Tamayo et al's failure to conduct an election for PFP's national officers before the expiration of their terms of office 'resulted in a governance vacuum, leading to a constitutional crisis within the party.' To address the said crisis, the SC noted that the party's regional members convened and elected their officers in a meeting on December 14, 2023, which put Verceles in power as the national president and Rodriguez as secretary general of PFP. Despite the election, the two claimed that Lantion 'unlawfully submitted' a Sworn Information Update Statement (SIUS) to the Comelec on behalf of the PFP on October 4, 2023, even after his authority already expired. Verceles and Rodriguez argued that their SIUS submitted on December 20 of the same year was the valid one and should be recognized by the Comelec. The Comelec En Banc, however, said that the petition lacked merit, ruling that the Tamayo et al remained as the incumbent officials of the party. The poll body found that the elections conducted in December 2023 were invalid, ruling that Tamayo presented compelling evidence that the elections 'were not called by the proper authority, lacked the required quorum, and failed to comply with the proper notice requirements.' The SC, for its part, affirmed the Comelec en banc's decision and denied the petition for certiorari. The High Court stated that it finds no reason to receive the Comelec's finding regarding the late submission of Verceles and Rodriguez's SIUS as it was well past the Comelec's September 30, 2023, deadline, thus making Tamayo and others' submission 'the valid one.' 'The COMELEC committed no error in refusing to acknowledge Verceles and Rodriguez's SIUS, which was submitted late and without authority,' the SC said. 'To conclude, the COMELEC's findings of fact, based on substantial evidence, are considered final and binding by this Court, especially as the Petition failed to show an arbitrary or whimsical exercise of jurisdiction on the part of the COMELEC,' it added. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Ang says he gave P12 million when Patidongan ran for mayor
Businessman Chalie 'Atong' Ang said he gave Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan P12 million for his mayoral campaign in the last elections. According to John Consulta's report on '24 Oras,' Ang said Patidongan asked for money from the other members of their group after he lost. 'Ang grupo namin, lahat tinatawagan, nageextort. akala niya, matapos niyang magsalita ng kung ano-anong kalokohan, pwede na siyang aalis pag nakuha niya ang pera, yun ang problema,' Ang said. 'Lahat tinatawagan. Si Gretchen tinatawagan. humihingi ng pangkampanya yung asawa. tapos humihingi ng pampaanak,' he added. Ang said it was Patidongan who asked for P300 million in exchange for sparing him from getting dragged into the case of the abduction of the missing cockfight enthusiasts. Patidongan has said that it was Ang who offered the amount for the recantation of his allegations. The former security chief at some of Ang's farms and cockpit arenas alleged that Ang was the mastermind in the abduction and killing of the missing sabungeros from 2021 to 2022, an allegation the businessman denied. The Commission on Elections mirror server showed Dondon Patidongan narrowly losing the mayoral race in Barobo, Surigao Del Sur, to Ronnie Martizano. It also showed that Patidongan was a member of the PFP. Partido Federal ng Pilipinas president Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. confirmed to GMA News Online that one Julie ''Dondon'' Patidongan ran for mayor of Barobo, Surigao del Sur in the recent midterm elections. Tamayo, however, did not know Patidongan personally as he was only introduced by the party's provincial chairman. President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. is the chairman of the PFP. Asked if the President knows Patidongan, Castro said there is no information yet on the matter. 'Sa ngayon, wala pa pong nakakarating sa atin patungkol sa ganyang issue,' she said. GMA News Online has also sought the Commission on Elections for information on the matter, but it has yet to reply as of posting time. –Vince Angelo Ferreras/NB, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Partido Federal now a formidable force
Because of our concerted efforts, we have become a formidable force in public service, Marcos says of his political party, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas. (Screengrab from PCO post President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. said Monday that his political party, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), has become a formidable force in public service. The President, in a statement made more than a month after the May 12 midterm polls, said the PFP members are now 'agents of meaningful growth and progress in the country.' 'I convey my most heartfelt greetings to my fellow members of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas. Thank you all for your continued support, unwavering commitment, and solidarity in uplifting the lives of Filipinos. I am truly proud of what we have accomplished in the past years. Because of our concerted efforts, we have become a formidable force in public service,' he said in a video message. 'This is proof that our vision and everything we stand for as a movement and as a party resonate loudly with our people. That is why we must continue to sustain the party's brand of governance that Filipinos have come to expect from us and make sure that our actions are transparent, effective, and responsive to the needs of our citizens,' Marcos added. He then called on his party mates to serve their terms with renewed vigor and strength towards realizing Bagong Pilipinas 'where every individual is empowered with greater opportunities.' 'Let us commit ourselves to a higher level of excellent leadership and be the visionaries, the trailblazers, and changemakers that society calls for and deserves,' he said. In the May elections, PFP fielded three Senate bets but all of them lost: former Senator and Filipino boxing Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao, Senator Francis Tolentino and former Secretary Benhur Abalos of the Department of Interior and Local Government. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Nanyang Poly student engineers comeback after near-expulsion, wanting to 'throw studies away'
He was at risk of flunking out. But being given a second chance made all the difference for Seamus Liew, who is now one of Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP)'s most outstanding graduates. He recently won a gold medal in Mechanical Engineering CAD (Computer-Aided Design) at WorldSkills Singapore 2025 - his first major competition and proudest achievement to date. "Because not only did I do it for myself, I did it for my teachers. I had promised them that I would win something. I also did it for my family and my friends, so winning made me very proud," Seamus told Stomp. Getting here was far from easy, however. Seamus opened up about a dark time in his life, when he had to "put aside" his studies due to personal struggles. He was then in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), a bridging year at NYP designed to prepare students for their diploma courses. "I actually overlooked a test. I completely didn't see the email. And because of that, I failed one of the modules and had to appeal against being expelled from the programme," he recounted. "That put me in a deeper hole, because I was already dealing with some personal stuff. I felt like giving up and just throwing my studies away. "I asked the director of PFP to give me another chance. He empathised with my situation and gave me that second chance. I took it." Even after graduating with a Diploma in Engineering with Business, Seamus has not stopped upskilling or pursuing his passion. He currently helps out at NYP's Mechatronics department while awaiting enlistment into National Service. Seamus at his NYP workspace. PHOTO: STOMP Seamus, who also has interests in accounting, computing and mechanical design, said perseverance and commitment are key. He added: "Because when I feel like giving up, I also feel motivated to not give up. It's like a loop and I think that is my greatest strength." The WorldSkills Singapore 2025 competition tested that mindset to the limit. "The first day, I went in thinking that I could do it. Turns out I could not, because some of the tasks were intentionally designed to be impossible to complete," Seamus recalled. "It was very daunting and really demotivating for the participants, and I felt like giving up. "However, I remembered my loop. Through it, I gained motivation for the next two days and pushed through." Seamus is a gold medallist at WorldSkills Singapore 2025. "Don't give up even when things seem impossible." Click here to contribute a story or submit it to our WhatsApp Get more of Stomp's latest updates by following us on:

Filipino 'Anak' singer Freddie Aguilar died of multiple organ failure
Freddie Aguilar (pic) died of multiple organ failure at the Philippine Heart Center, according to his ex-partner, Josephine Quiepo. The cause of Aguilar's death was announced on the May 27 episode of Fast Talk With Boy Abunda with the mainstay host citing Quiepo. "According to Josie, Ka Freddie died of multiple organ failure at the Philippine Heart Center last night. On May 20, Ka Freddie asked for prayers on his Facebook page, but he didn't detail his condition," said Abunda. Aguilar's death was earlier confirmed by lawyer George Briones of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) on Tuesday. The singer, who died at 72 years old, previously served as the national executive vice president of the political party. Aguilar's final partner, Jovie Albao, penned a farewell message to the singer following his death. She took to her Facebook account to share a photo of her and Aguilar engaged in an embrace as she promised to lead a good life so they can reunite in heaven. 'I will live a good life so I can meet you in Jannah (Heaven). Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (to Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return). This is not goodbye, just farewell for now. Mahal na mahal kita, hanggang sa muli bhabe (I love you so much. Until we meet again, babe). It was a good fight, because we are fighting together,' she wrote. The remains of the singer were buried less than 24 hours after following the Islamic burial rites. In 2013, when he was 60, Aguilar converted to Islam so he could marry Albao, who was then 16 years old. Their relationship drew criticism and concern especially from the youth sector. Known for his songs Anak and Bayan Ko, Aguilar established his identity as a folk singer-songwriter by blending elements of Manila sound, folk, and rock in his music. He is also known for letting his long locks loose, which are often held in place by a fedora hat, as well as his clear sunglasses during performances. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
