Local professional golfer Brian Campbell earns second PGA Tour win

Brian Campbell certainly has a flair for the dramatic. Campbell, who was born in Newport Beach and grew up in Irvine, earned his second PGA Tour victory Sunday in a sudden-death playoff at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill. Campbell, 32, won on the first playoff hole against Emiliano Grillo of Argentina after shooting 4-under-par 67 on Sunday for a tournament total of -18. Both of Campbell's victories on tour have come this season, as he also won the Mexico Open in February. That victory also went to a playoff, with Campbell making a birdie on the second hole to outlast Aldrich Potgieter of South Africa. Campbell, who attended Mater Dei High School, said during his post-tournament press conference Sunday that finding himself in a playoff situation once again felt familiar, following his victory in Mexico. '[I'm] just so over the moon to be in that position, and to come back and finish it off,' he said. 'A lot of nerves, that's for sure, but I can't believe we're here. What a special event.' The playoff hole Sunday was the par-four 18th, and he only needed a par to secure the win and the $1,512,000 first-place check. Campbell is now ranked 28th in the PGA Tour FedExCup standings. 'After your first win, I'd say there was a lot of expectations that came about,' he said. 'Unfortunately, I dealt with a lot of random sicknesses that hit me and pulled me out of a few tournaments I really wanted to play. I just really had to trust what I had been doing before, and now we're here. It's just wild.' Campbell grew up playing at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa where his parents, Don and Kim, were members. He first played on the PGA Tour in 2017, but has spent much of his time since then on the Korn Ferry Tour, returning to the PGA Tour this season after regaining his card. The John Deere Classic win had extra significance to him, as he attended college in the same state, at the University of Illinois. 'The awe of this tournament, it really is spectacular,' he said. 'The finishing hole is one of the coolest finishing holes that we play out here. A lot can happen, birdies can be made, tournaments can be won. It's just so fun to be here.' Next up for Campell? The Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, scheduled for July 10 to 14. 'I think we're headed to Scotland tonight,' Campbell said Sunday. '[I've] gotta celebrate in Scotland, I guess.'

Max Homa 'didn't hit one crazy shot' in career-best opening-round score on PGA Tour

Zach Johnson joins Golf Today to discuss the John Deere Classic, if he feels old after turning 50, the future of his golf career, the PGA Tour FedExCup standings, Keegan Bradley's U.S. Ryder Cup backroom team and more. For a guy who said that his game wasn't 'particularly sharp,' Max Homa looked like the six-time winner he is, Thursday at the John Deere Classic. Homa, who didn't sound an optimistic tune — in relation to his form — in his pre-tournament presser, shot 8-under 63 in the opening round at TPC Deere Run. It was his career-best first-round score on Tour. 'I just did everything really solid. I made a ton of putts. Kept the driver in good spots. Got to take advantage of my iron play, my wedge play,' he said. 'I do feel like we found a little something with the driver, all the long clubs, and it was nice to do that for 18 full holes. I didn't hit one crazy shot today, so that was cool.' Homa made nine birdies and one bogey (on his final hole) to finish one back of clubhouse leader Doug Ghim. He gained strokes on the field off the tee, into the greens and with his putter (more than 3 shots, in fact, in the latter category). He also hit 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation. His previous best opening-round score was a 64 in the 2023 Genesis Invitational, according to the Tour. That was also the year in which he recorded his most recent victory. After going winless last year, Homa notably made myriad changes — to his apparel, clubs, coaching, caddie and even social-media habits — into and throughout this season. He has yet to record a top-10 finish and has made only half his cuts. But Thursday's 63 was his best score of the year — in any round. He shot 64 Friday at the PGA Championship, then followed with 76-77 over the weekend. Asked if he thought his most recent play was sustainable, Homa replied, 'I mean, I don't see why not, but I'm not, I guess, worried about it being — it's not going to be my lasting thought as I leave here today. I played a good round of golf; every day is different.' Homa will be back at it at 2 p.m. EDT Friday in Silvis, Illinois, alongside Jake Knapp and Rickie Fowler. Knapp shot 68 in Round 1 while Fowler had a 6-under 65, thanks to a second-nine 29.

PGA Tour FedEx Cup update: Did Sepp Straka's Truist victory close him in on Rory McIlroy?

PGA Tour FedEx Cup update: Did Sepp Straka's Truist victory close him in on Rory McIlroy? Sepp Straka has held the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup points lead twice this season. The first time was after a victory at the American Express and a tie for seventh at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which enabled him to overtake the first leader of the season, Hideki Matsuyama. After Ludvig Åberg knocked Straka into second place by winning the Genesis Invitational, Straka came back to regain the lead with a tie for fifth place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Rory McIlroy then shot up to No. 1 with his victory in The Players Championship, and Straka dipped as low as fifth a month ago. Now, he's inching back towards the top after his victory in the Truist Championship on May 11, at the Philadelphia Cricket Club Wissahickon Course. Straka was rock-solid down the stretch in holding off Shane Lowry to win the PGA Tour Signature Event and the chunk of 700 FedEx Cup points that went with it. That enabled him to rise from fourth to second and he's 521 points behind leader Rory McIlroy. McIlroy tied for seventh to add 187 points and has a lead of 521 points over Straka. But there could be a new leader, based on what happens at the PGA Championship this week at Quail Hollow, since there will be 700 points offered up to the winner. Who else moved up on the FedEx Cup points list? Shane Lowry jumped from 17th to eighth with his tie for second. Tommy Fleetwood tied for fourth to go from 24th to 13th. And Jacob Bridgeman's tie for fourth with Fleetwood resulted in a jump of 12 spots to 21st. Here were some other big moves, both in the Truist Championship and the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic: Ryan Fox, 76 spots (138th to 62nd), won in Myrtle Beach Harry Higgs, 51 spots (163rd to 112th), tie for second in Myrtle Beach Rickie Fowler, 28 spots (125th to 97th) tie for 15th at Truist Cameron Young, 26 spots (81st to 55th) tie for seventh at Truist Keith Mitchell, 24 spots (71st to 47th) tie for seventh at Truist PGA Tour FedEx Cup points through Truist Championship

Celebrating 30 Years of Delivering Hope and Health With FedEx

April 23rd, 1995. It's a date etched in the history of Heart to Heart International (HHI) and in the story of a powerful relationship. On that day, a FedEx aircraft made history as the first commercial American aircraft to land in Vietnam since the end of the conflict. The plane was carrying tons of medicines and medical supplies as a sign of friendship and goodwill between the two countries. Twenty years after the Vietnam War concluded, this monumental delivery of 45 tons of aid reached clinics, hospitals, and critical care facilities across Vietnam. Heart to Heart International focused its efforts on providing essential care to underserved women and children in rural and impoverished urban areas. The groundbreaking flight, facilitated with the support of many government officials, symbolized a pivotal moment in the relations between the United States and Vietnam As Le Van Bang, the Charge d'Affaires from the Vietnam Embassy, noted, 'We believe that the April airlift of $7 million in medicines was instrumental in influencing the President of your country to normalize relations with our country.' Read: How Do Heart to Heart International and FedEx Spell Relief? Beyond its immediate impact, this airlift served as the launchpad for a remarkable 30-year collaboration between Heart to Heart International and FedEx, a relationship that has since touched millions of lives with essential aid and support.
